    Thank you for clarifying that quotes are not mandatory! The mark scheme said to use “relevant example in support”, and our teacher told us it would be best to learn certain key words that describe important characters and themes (like “loneliest guys in the world”, for example) which does make sense, but in the exams I always get nervous since I’m trying to remember other quotes I hadn’t memorized but suddenly thought might be important 😅 Honestly it’s my own problem- I should stick to the ones I’m familiar with, instead of chasing some half-remembered words that might have some deeper meaning. It’s just, my brain picks very inopportune times to be insightful and really nit-picky. Hopefully the stress during the actual exam will kick my mind in shape.

      I think your teacher has great advice - and some quotes are really helpful like the one you mentioned. I think the main thing is don't panic if you can't think of exact quotes in the exam - just focus on describing what you do know. All the best tomorrow.

    Hi, thanks for the great video, so you don’t have to analyse language in as much depth, but what structure would you suggest to do (PEA, PEACE, ect) and what would you do instead of analysing language, explain/link it back to the question?
    this would really help me, thank you, I’m sure others have said it, you are the only person who actually does OMAM, so I’m so grateful, thank you 🙏🏽

      I'd recommend the PEEL structure (point, evidence, explanation and link to context). Instead of zooming in on the language, focus on what Steinbeck's overall message was and how he communicated that. All the best for tomorrow.

    Hi! I have a question about themes. If for example, a question asks about the theme of happiness is presented in the novella. Could i mention in my thesis that its presented through the lack of, and this is evident in relationships between characters ? And then go on to analyse how characters feel sad, and then link it to lack of happiness. Does this count as changing the question ?
    Also, what structure should we use to write our paragraphs- do you think PEEL would be sufficient ?
    Sorry for so many questions, your videos have been a great help! :)

    • @LikeAnExpertRevision
      @LikeAnExpertRevision  9 месяцев назад +2

      Hi there, yes you can definitely invert the question as you've suggested as long as you keep the key words in the question in your thesis statement and topic sentences, e.g., for your example you could say 'John Steinbeck presents happiness as being something that is hard to achieve in such an isolated society'.
      Yes PEEL would work really well if you're confident with that.
      All the best tomorrow.

      Looks like I won't have time to get the video out today, so here are my top tips for the anthology poetry. For this 50% of the marks are for analysis and 50% are for comparison skills.
      1. Make sure you revise poetic language and structural techniques and also poetic forms. There are free resources online for this. I'm afraid I don't have any free resources on this at the moment, but I do have a £3 knowledge organiser for these techniques: www.tes.com/teaching-resource/resource-12448523
      2. Break down the question to see what its focus is. Draw a Venn diagram to map out the similarities and differences between each poem. Choose your three best points for your body paragraphs.
      3. Use a structure such as PEECEE (point comparing both poems, evidence and explanation for the first poem, comparison point plus evidence and explanation). This will keep your paragraphs focused on both analysis and comparison.
      4. Don't forget to analyse structure and form as well as language.

      Good question - it's up to you. Personally I would do them in order as OMAM is the longest one and you don't want to overrun and give less time to the earlier questions. However, I would recommend with being really strict on timing with the first 2 questions.

    Hello could we talk about the sycamore tree use. The sycamore represents strength, protection, eternity and divinity which we could link to George and Lennie’s relationship. At the start of the novel the sycamore is used a lot but by the end it’s used less which could reflect the breakdown of the main relationships in the novela.
    But in the Bible, it represents transformation and regeneration so could be link that to the contrast of the life of migrant workers?
    My friend and I were thinking about this so I don’t know if it’s correct as we didn’t ask the teacher yet.

    • @LikeAnExpertRevision

      I love that you've been thinking about the symbolism of the sycamore. Perhaps it symbolises the protection of the brush: this is the only time that George and Lennie are free from the tyranny of a boss on a ranch? What do you think?

      Each of your paragraph topic sentences should support your overall argument in your introduction (you can see my introduction video to help with this). Does this work? Eg. How is Loneliness presented?
      One character that alludes loneliness is Curleys wife, she is clearly alone most of the time and even when she tries to communicate to the ranch workers, they describe her as a “rattrap” and Curley would always want her in the house. In the 1930’s there was a high level of gender discrimination and the women specifically were objectified and controlled by men. Curleys wife has an American dream to star in Hollywood movies and in the “pixel”. Most women in the 1935s became famous from movies and this was her dream aswell. However, Steinbeck juxtaposes this idea and makes her stay in Salinas farm, filled with male workers. His intention may be to show the cruetly of gender roles at this time and how women were unable to say much and only follow male order.

    • @LikeAnExpertRevision
      @LikeAnExpertRevision  9 месяцев назад

      @@Anonymousview-s8l This is a great paragraph - I love your sentence beginning 'his intention may be...' - really great wording. I would just add a sentence at the end to really clearly link your argument back to the question, e.g., 'Steinbeck suggests that this gender discrimination was adding to a growing feeling of isolation and loneliness in society'.

    • @Anonymousview-s8l
      @Anonymousview-s8l 9 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you so much for the feedback :) i was really worried on what i have to analyse as i havent done a question on this for a while, you mentioned that we shouldn’t analyse language. But could i analyse the meaning behind it. Eg. When Crooks says “No one gets to heaven and no one gets no land”, the harsh tone of this line highlights crooks negative mindset and this could be due to his racial discrimination. He doesnt appear to have any dream or support any, as in the 1930’s black men in particular were divided and separated from other people, there were also many racial terrorist groups that were willing to “lynch” black men if they did anything wrong. In crooks room he has the 1903 civil right book and he knows for a fact that he deserves equality, yet as people are treating him differently, this may be the reason he doesnt like to be positive or support any “white” persons dream. Steinbecks intention may be to highglight how much black people were affected by this discrimination and how they became unsupportive to peoples dreams. Overall, this shows how crooks is unable to support and wants to “Demolish” Lennies goal, just as the 1930’s John Crows Law did to him.
