Testing the RM Italy LA 145 VHF linear amplifier

- In this video I am testing the RM Italy LA 145 VHF linear amplifier. I am using a Yaesu FT-818 set to 145.500 MHz FM on L1 and L2 power setting (1 W and 2.5 W according to the manual but measured somewhat lower). The radio is connected to a power supply, so no battery involved. The amplifier is connected to the same power supply with a DC power meter installed. Between the dummy load and the amplifier is an SWR cross-needle meter installed to measure the RF power.
I made a mistake when speaking about switching the radio power level. Instead of switiching it to the second highest I switched it to the second lowest. Since the maximum input power of the amplifier is 4 W this is the highest level I can safely use (2.5 W).

What cable do i need to link the 818 and this amp?
Only a coax cable. This amp does not have a PTT line, it uses HF vox for switching between RX and TX. I'm using a BNC to PL cable.

Hi Philipp, ich hätte eine Frage: Wenn ich den Verstärker mit meinem 2m/70cm Dual Band Transceiver benutze, ist dann bei ausgeschaltetem Verstärker der (unverstärkte) Betrieb auf 70cm möglich? Also wird ein Signal außerhalb des Frequenzbereiches des Verstärkers ge-bypasst?
Ich habe es noch nicht ausprobiert, aber so wie ich es verstanden habe müsste der im bypass laufen, wenn der Verstärker aus ist.
Danke für deine schnelle Reaktion. Du kannst es nicht ev. ausprobieren? Ich würde mir das Teil ungern kaufen, und dann draufkommen, dass ich für 70cm jedes Mal umstecken müsste. Da wäre die Lösung dann eher unbrauchbar für mich.

@@markusgritsch Hi! Also im ausgeschalteten Zustand geht UHF einfach durch. Ich habe einen Schaltplan vom KL-145 gefunden, das müsste der Vorgänger sein, und da kann das Signal durch zwei Relais 1:1 durchgeführt werden. Wird beim LA-145 wohl ähnlich sein.

Ok, If I am following you correctly-- You *Drove the ( LA145 AMP ) with 0.5 watts - During your Drive Process using 0.5 watt-- I see your *Inline Meter register as 83 Watt Output
This LA145 Amp is rated at 85 watt out being driven with as low as .05 watts Input.
Are you Not Happy with this amplifier? I ask you these questions only because I may purchase this Same LA145 VHF Amp for our Marine Radio Frequency Range 156.050-157.425..
No, the 83 W ist the power drawn from the power supply. At 0.5 W of RF input, the amp produces around 30 W of RF output (60 W with 2.5 W of RF input). In generally I'm happy with the amp. If you are using FM it's really a no-brainer. SSB can be a little tricky because it only has an RF sense for switching RX/TX and no external PTT connector. Also there are no protections for the amp. You need to manually keep an eye on the input power level and the temperature or mount an external fan. But again, if you consider the low price of the unit that is really much to ask for.

Hi! Yeah, CW should be fine if the amp is in ssb mode, so it stays in transmit mode for some time.

Ssb mode adds about half a second delay to the hf vox, so if you are fast enough it won't switch back to receive. But I guess you could also modify the amp to add an external key input for switching to tx.
