George Washington had it right: there should never have been any political parties. Eventually it becomes more important that a party stays in power than people with good ideas getting to run the country. Naturally, people of like minds in government would likely form informal alliances from time to time to suit certain agendas, imagine what it would be like if everyday people had to listen to ideas and decide on candidates based on who has the best ones, as opposed to know what a larger political body claims to be about and just voting for the people who claim to be part of that group. No nuance, no discernment, just "they have that letter after their name, and more importantly, they DON'T have that other letter." What if voters were loyal to issues, not parties? What if none of this quid pro quo party loyalty existed and every politician was a party of one, and could rise and fall based on their abilities and not because they earned it after years of loyalty to "the club."
