Building a Helix Dual Amp Live Guitar Rig (Part 3) - Dialing in Dual Tones

- This is part 3 of my vlog series on building my rackmount guitar rig. In this part, I focus on building patches and I demonstrate how to make one guitar sound like 2 through a cabinet and direct to front-of-house.
This all-in-one rack allows me to plug into any scenario simply by picking a different Helix preset. No cable or hardware changes needed. I can also run dual amps/channels, so live will truly sound like 2 guitars.
So far, the components of this build include the Helix Rack with Foot Controller (not the same thing as the Helix Floor), Seymour Duncan Powerstage 700, Line 6 Relay G90 guitar wireless system, and the Furman M-8x2 power conditioner...all in a 6-space Gator shallow rack.
I'd love to know how your rig is set up! Drop me a comment and let me know!

So considering that live music is still on pause, are you guys taking a break from music? I did for a few months because it was nearly impossible to focus with everything going on...but it's about time to get back to it!
Yeah man. I was just getting going with a band then covid happened and now there's nothing. That rig is freaking gnarly. What would be cool now is another signal/guitar player running mono panned center. That would be kind of a Periphery type set up. Where are you guys based out of?
@@RyanAmplification Funny you say that. With my rig I can actually do a 3rd down the center. I'm not crazy about it all the time, but for a big part it can be amazing. But yeah that's interesting...never thought about applications for this along with another guitarist, and I'm always kicking around the idea of bringing one on. ...now you got my gears turning, lol. 🤔
@@BeneathVultures haha yeah man a center panned guitar player to play slightly different parts and solos would be pretty sweet. Or the same part. There are no limits! There are all kinds of cool things you can do with technology.
Cool stuff Chad. I've heard a bunch of dual and triple amp live setups... Always a good idea.
Great video and super useful series!
Question: Are there any downsides to having both outputs on every patch? Rather than creating duplicate patches with different output options, would it be bad to always have the outputs set up, even if they are not connected?
Example: Have one preset that outputs to cab and DI, but only plug in the outputs that are needed for that situation (they won't be plugged in otherwise).
The downside is that if you run to multiple outputs, you'll likely need to use more slots and more DSP. Obviously that reduces how much space you have for effects. Other than that, it all comes down to organization and personal preference.
Have a few questions for you....
Since you are plugging in to the returns on the Helix and not the guitar in, are you using an instrument level or line level setting on the input? Same thing goes for the output setting in the global commands, are you sending a mic level to foh and line level to the cab? And lastly, are you using the volume knob on the Helix to control what your you're sending to your stage volume and only sending channel volume to front of house? I know that can be done in global settings but was curious if that is how you were doing it. Thanks man and love the setup!
Thanks man! Great questions that people usually don't get into unless they are actively working in the same gear. 1. Instrument Level. 2. XLR to mic level and 1/4 to line level. 3. Volume knob is set to XLR out so I can control for foh. Full signal is sent to the preamp that powers the cab because the volume is handled there. Hope that clears up some stuff. 🤘
Hello, I have a question, I think there is something that I don't understand :
Why do you need the Mimiq for the stereo effect, if you already are using 2 different amps pan left/right on your preset ?
I mean you should still have a perfect stereo effect even without the Mimiq with that configuration. Or there is something that I don't understand.. Thanks for your answer.
Try it and you'll see. It sounds like you have a mono guitar but you added some effects on the left and right separately (which is essentially what you did). Before all this tech, guitarists and sound guys would double mic and then add a few milliseconds of delay on one side to account for this, but that still sounds super artificial.
Can you use the floor helix and accomplish the same dual sound with the mimic?
Yep, same operating system! 🤘🤘
I have a simulair setup in real life. 2 amps and 2 cabs with the Mimiq. My question is why there is a need to pan it left and right? 8:00 The placement of the cabs are the panning right? If I missed something how can I pan my 2 amp/cab setup even more than the Mimiq does.
You're 100% correct. If you have 2 physical amps then there's no further panning needed. Panning on the Helix essentially does what you're already doing - puts 1 amp on L and 1 amp on R. If you're running 2 cabs, those can then be placed anywhere to create the L/R panning you want or panning can be done at the house board if running L/R out to a PA. 🤘
I have a stereo Mesa boogie 2x100 rectifier power amp …wouldn’t that deliver a stereo sound like delays time based stuff etc
Yep, it totally works for stereo effects, but your input signal is still mono no matter what effects you throw at it. It's actually pretty mindblowing because you'd think that you could trick the amp into giving you a stereo spread with enough effects, but nope. That singular soundwave still pushes your signal right down the middle. The Mimiq pedal modifies your signal on the 2nd path through some sort of pitch shift, time shift, and phase flip (I think) to provide a variation that actually comes across like 2 different signals. That gives the 2-guitar attack that sounds so great live. That's really the whole point of a rig like this. 🤘
@@BeneathVultures cool I have a pod go into this monster power amp and time based effects like ping pong delay sound really cool stereo ..delay bounce it all over the room out 2 Evh 2x12s …in the mornin I’m picking up my helix rack …kinda how I found u …wanted some pointers on setting her up …thanks man
@@hierrogm You are going to fall in love once you experience all of the routing options. Actually, the Helix does have a dual guitar signal effect similar to the Mimiq. Not nearly as convincing, but it may get the job done depending on what you want out of it. Have a blast man!
@@BeneathVultures yeah that where podgo wireless fell short ..dsp and routing …the double take effect is what your talking about …I thing while I’m spending all this money ..gonna look into a mimic..I’m only guitarist ..I’ll have my two Evhs on either side of stage ..l play small to medium clubs bars …can’t wait to get my hands on it ..was gonna go floor but crowd gets nuts and wouldn’t want to get fucked up
You don't use the amp & cab block if you're running in to a real cab. you'll get phase issues doing that. Just run the amp only model into your power amp.
He did that right
