Born and lived in Gateshead until i was 13 then moved away to North Yorkshire with parents. I'm now 57 and still think of my home town with very fond memories. Great pictures, well done.

My dad came down South in 1935 to work in the Chatham Dockyard on gunnery. He served his time with vickers Armstrong. He lived in Askew road over a greengrocers shop. I came up to see my old grandma in 1958 when I was eleven years old. I would love to see some pics of the Askew road area if there are any. Many thanks love this site.

Coatsworth Road! I remember back in the 1980s, my parents seemed to spend all day on Saturdays between there and Gateshead High Street paying bills. It's made me wonder whether Direct Debits are partly to blame for the decline of our High Streets! When the Metrocentre opened in the mid 80s, Coatsworth Road and Gateshead High Street really didn't stand a chance. Things always come full circle and the Metrocentre is in a real state now.

Like the first picture 00:03 with the class 43 AKA "InterCity 125" train ... Was light years ahead of it's time for 1976 when it was introduced.
