Nell is so true to her breed, rounding up the chickens, checking on Toby, and her humans, making sure no one is coming in the gate, baby sitting the foster and playing gently with the kittens, what a treasure....

A great milestone indeed. I'm honestly in awe of Dessie and Francis, it was really fascinating to watch master ccraftsmen at work - the patience and precision must make you feel like you'll get a very sturdy chimney - so thanks for thinking to film it because I wouldn't have had the chance otherwise.

The Hearth of your future home just pointed its hand skyward through the rubble and bits of tin, Its clean lines saying " One Day the rest of my body will be revealed, restored upon the landscape, giving shelter ,warmth and love to all who need it,"
Your hands have touched every stone ,every barrow , your mind has thought of every detail.
Your energy is knitted into every act.
    Mixed with every passing shower,
    Warmed by infrequent sunshine,
Within earshot of the passing hunt.
Chickens roust in the dryness of your refuge,
This daily toil will pass and a new space will dwell
    Its finger pointing skyward ,
    A reminder of that day,
    now since past.
Of when this now revived Spirit first revealed,
    Itself.

There are so many layers of interest in these videos. The neighbors coming in to help, the annoyance of the weather, the beautiful landscape ... I could go on and on. But the thing that I love about these videos is how the chickens, cats, dogs are constantly popping in to inspect the work ... and I am sure Toby supervises them from afar making sure the standards are kept high. This is entertainment at its finest, I must say. NOTE TO BEC AND SAM: In Texas, we sometimes put up owl houses. They have voracious appetites for mice and rodents. I don't know if there are owls in Ireland but what a great addition to add to the growing family if a pair of barn owls moved in to stay.

Good morning Bec’s, Sam and Family. Just when I think that after your Herculean achievements in getting the roof trusses on and made watertight. Then your epic concrete floor slab installing, and the seemingly never ending repointing of lime mortar You somehow manage to create yet another miracle building a new fireplace. Bad enough that you had to construct it in such appalling conditions, but the actual building of, isn’t the big deal, it’s the million and one other things that you need to do in order to build. Moving, making, erecting a scaffold, loading out all the blocks, mortar mixing, humping all those blocks 15 / 20 feet in the air, all them buckets of mortar. Having to fight with the weather, try to keep the wet off the construction. It really is a never ending, ceaseless task with no let up. Great pair of skilful brickie’s too, they sure know their stuff. …. Once again the Bec’s n Sam team triumph against the odds…. My respects to you both Bec’s n Sam…. Dave

    • @theirishhomestead
      @theirishhomestead  4 месяца назад +17

Thanks, Dave. Yes it's all the things that aren't shown which add to the days activities and slow us down further. Things like erecting scaffolding, mixing many many barrows full of lime/mortar, feeding & cleaning out of animals,, cleaning up after a day's work, packing up tools & getting them out again. Ensuring we have wood/kindling. Keeping on top of the land, feeding everyone, home ed work, keeping on top of the washing & general housework, buying materials and of course filming & editing.
Saying that we have never been happier. 😉♥️

Hello Sam and Bec’s. I think that I have mentioned to you both previously just how proud I am of you both. I am an old (70) working class man, very proud of my working class roots, despite the snide, scummy comments I know I will get from the Tory voters.. I come from a very large, very hard working class family (10).. we were taught never to expect others to pay to keep us. You want to live….then learn to look after yourselves, not expect others to pay for you. My Granfer, as a 17yr old left his isolated rural farmstead in Somerset to go and fight in the battlefields of France for his country. Injured three times, he finally had to give up, losing half of both feet to frostbite. His country thanked him by telling him there was nothing more they could do to help him. Given his train fare back to Somerset. His parents both now passed and his farmstead home taken over by others. Barely able to walk, or move about, spending the next few years sleeping in roadside ditches and stealing swede and potato to survive on plus the kindhearted goodness of a few working class farm labourers. 😅That was how it was for working class people back then. Truth be told that is how is for decent, hardworking class people now….. it’s a tough life for people like you and me Sam and Bec’s…that ain’t ever going to change….But… your Inate, working class qualities compels you to keep driving forward, no matter what, you are on a mission and nothing can ever stop your eventual success. … Stand tall and proud Bec’s and Sam, Your dreams are slowly becoming your reality. This old man is here…rooting for you both…. Proud of you both ❤️❤️

Chimney(s) are looking good. The mortar on the top around the pots will perish over the next 3 to 5 years. To prevent this, use bitumen paint on the mortar. Get someone who knows what to do, to dress a lead apron around the pots and then around the chimney-top edges. Then finally, neatly seal the lead that’s hugging around the bottom of the pots with bitumen. This job should last you a lifetime and save you having to go up to fix the mortar every few years. I learnt this the hard way from my own experience. Great job so far keep going!

Sam and Bec you both have done such sterling work on your home renovation. Look how far you have come and I was over the moon that you put the fireplace back and the chimney looks spectacular. Dessie and Francis did a beautiful job of the chimney. You are getting far now on the renovation and when you showed what the old chimney looked like against the new what a difference your whole build has taken on not to mention all the pointing inside and out. Hearing the hunters and dogs was beautiful and I am glad they are still doing the tradition. The kitty with its broken leg and Nell looking after it and just letting the kitty know that he/she is not alone. Have a lovely week.

Thanks. We will relax and sit back and breathe a sigh of relief once that roof is on. It feels like a big challenge ahead and the stone work has to be done first. That is really slowing progress down just trying to stabilise those walls.

I have just finished watching all your videos on the homestead and I’m loving it. Thank you for rescuing Toby he is lovely. I love all your animals, but Nell is so wonderful checking on all the animals and all of you, she is amazing. You are doing a fantastic job on the renovation, I’m always so amazed at what people can achieve when they aren’t professionals at the skilled trades. Sam I know what you mean about having to work on your mental health all the time, I suffer from depression anxiety and stress and have had 3 breakdowns over the last 9 years. You have to check in with yourself to spot the early signs and then use the techniques to manage it. I would like to get to a point like you where I’m helping others but I’m not mentally strong enough yet x

Hey, I know you don't have a lot of idle time, but I just found another channel which has me mesmerized. It's a young Asian girl who built a wooden house, all by herself, in just 90 days. Her channel is Wild Novels. The first video I watched was "90 Days to Build a Wooden House - a Woman's Admirable Physique/ - Starts to Finish". It's 54 minutes, but if you put it on 2x fast speed, you can watch it in less than half an hour. Give it a go if you have time. Take care now!
