This is one of my favorites, prefer it over the curse of vampires album due to the spaciness and the more restrained approach more similar to Tubby’s. If you take some shrooms or lsd in a forest this turns into magic

On the Linval repress, it comes with an extra LP of all the vocal tracks. The Mouse & Linval are awesome, but man those Meditations tracks!

SKIDIP is one of my favorite albums. It feels like a dub album with vocals if that makes any sense, so the first track was a v cool surprise. Now the second track is too. This is the exact kind of dub I love. Thank you

Can someone explain to me the naming of these tracks and where the instrumentals are originally from? Is this considered sampling? For instance I know the first track as the beat for Sensi Party by Eek-a-Mouse, but here it’s called Under Surveillance.

    • @antonio-nieto

In the 80s when these tracks were recorded, it would usually start out with the instrumental being laid down at channel one studios by the band roots radics. A lot of times it would start with the singer singing his idea to the piano player who would find the chords and the rest of the band would play along. Then the instrumental would be taken to king tubby’s studio where the vocal track would be cut. When the engineer mixed down the track he would do 2 versions. One was a mix with the vocals and another was an instrumental dub version. If that particular song was going to be released as a single then the instrumental would be the B side of the single. The title of the dubs usually didn’t have much similarity to the title of the Vocal side. In the 70s, the instrumental dubs had become popular enough that full LPs of just dubs started being released (i.e. King Tubby Presents Roots of Dub, King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown). By the time scientist started to release his own dub records, the albums tended to have more of a theme to them in the cover art and song titles. Dub in a sense puts the engineer as the main musician. He uses the mixer as an instrument to arrange the tracks using the faders and effects to give it its own personality.
