It's important to point out that "may god pay you pack" is something usually used as a way to thank someone - you wish their good deed is rewarded by god in some way as you can't return the favor yourself. It is usually associated with beggars. But Buarque turns this super common blessing into a curse, wishing god would return many horrible "favors". So awesome.

As a Chinese，I discovered Caetano first，because his version of “Cucurrucucu Paloma”was used in the great Hong Kong movie“Happy Together” by Wong Kar-Wai . Then I discovered Gil, and then Gal Costa, and many more. After 2 years of listening to Brazilian music , I finally discovered Chico’s work,it’s not like others’ work, all the lyricisms is insanely complex, though I still can’t understand Portuguese, and reading his lyrics using translate software，there are all sorts of things amazed me. The life passion of mine is to become a poet ,writing poems in my mother language, thus reading Chico’s work really give me so many inspirations, and changed my perspective of writing poems. Although I can just partially understand the genius of this work, I always thought how can he wrote something so complex yet so beautiful, and not be a Nobel prize for literature winner, it’s greater than most work I’ve ever read, and trust me, I read a lot. Chico is a gift to all mankind,there is no one like him, he is too unique.

As a Filipino who loves bossa nova and MPB, the thing that especially grips me about this is that, well, like Brazil, we too had a dictatorship in the 70s and 80s, and that the story described here is very similar to what actually happened to construction workers in a government project (only instead of one construction worker falling to his death, it was around 170 construction workers falling into a pit of cement and not able to get out.). Gripping song!
So far, this is the only song to actually make my stomach drop quite a bit. The caustic, almost pitiful poetry of Buarque's lyrics depicting a mundane Brazilian man's life in the 1970s as a construction worker towards a horrifying, sudden death is haunting in ways no other music has made me feel.
i would recommend listening to "Panis et Circenses" and "Cálice". They are from the same time period and the latter is also from chico. One interesting thing to know before hearing it, is thata Cálice stands for Chalice, and in portuguese it sounds like Cale-se (Shut up).

As someone from Portugal - sharing the same language as Brazil - I considered Construção not only the best Brazilian song ever, but also the best song sung in Portuguese, and I heard all types of music from Portugal, Cape Verde, Angola, Mozambique, and Brazil (of course). Believe me, there's no greater gift than speaking the language of Fado and MPB.

Brazilian here. I think every child has listened to this song in 5th grade to learn about "proparoxytones". Nowadays, I just feel like crying when I listen. I get chills every time. It just gets weirder and weirder, the words keep changing but the rest of the sentences don't, and it still makes sense in a chaotic way.
to me, the song first describes the incident in the most mundane, then romanticized, and then the most dehumanizing way possible, the choices of words here are not random
The highlights here should be about this: - The main verses are all in dactylic rhymes. That is, rhyming the antepenultimate syllables. It is way harder as you have to always rhyme the three last syllables; - Words with the stress on the antepenultimate syllable are the rarest in Portuguese (as if the challenge wasn’t hard enough); - Chico Buarque “remixes” the writing at will, with subtle changes in subjectiveness, but keeping the factual story always the same; - The repetitiveness makes the upcoming lines somehow predictable, yet the changes always surprise you, keeping you attentive as you anticipate them; - All that while telling a short, yet coherent, meaningful and heartbreaking story; - bonus: It is a socio-political statement, during the military regime; These features are what makes listening to this song such a haunting, thrilling and soulful experience.

Are these technically rhymes? In English they wouldn't be considered rhymes, which requires that the last stressed syllable and everything following be identical. These all have the same stress pattern, but don't appear to be phonetic rhymes. Am I missing something?

Came here after watching Charles Cornell's video on Brazilian protest music, and man, I don't regret it. A very powerful song. I don't speak Portuguese, but thanks to the subtitles I realized that the final words are switched around in the second part. What a clever lyrical device! Swapping a few words around to give the text a different perspective. I'm sure the intricacy goes deeper if you understand the language and culture, but that trick just hit me as such powerful social commentary.
I think the words are switched around to add to the descending chaos of the song, all the way to a point where the lyrics dont make sense. Which is a really nice touch to it. I really love this song as much as you do haha

In 1971 He released "Construção", a fantastic studio album, in addition to this iconic and fabulous song of the same name from the album, others great songs make him of of the greatest artists in history of Brazil, songs like "Cotidiano", "Samba de Orly" and "Acalanto", he is like the Brazilian Bob Dylan and only a native and fluent in Portuguese language and with degree of repertoire and high schooling to clearly understand his work and that of other artists such as Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. In This song, Chico uses paroxytone words at the end of all the verses, and these correspond to about 10% of the words in Portuguese, something really impeccable and brilliant even from the linguistic point of view, apart from all the social and critical issues contained in the song about the political situation in Brazil in 1971. This was made during the Dictatorship in Brazil (1964-1985) during that time there was a huge boom in construction, but that came at the cost of many, many deaths of workers. The song tells the story of a ordinary worker that died falling from the top of a building, unfortunately history repeats itself. Hence the loop, different stories with the same outcome. The part were the song shifts the pace, Buarque is talking about the dictatorship and how people had to be glad for the privilege of breathing the polluted air and existing, because even that wasn't granted. It's just a masterpiece, wish I could explain it better but I'm tired rn and my English is lacking because of that lol. Any questions just ask, i really love this song and it's history.
This is probably Brazil's Magnum Opus when it comes to lyrics. A lot is lost in translation because it involves a lot of grammar play, but it really is a wonder in Portuguese.

In my opinion he was one of the great masterminds behind a lot of the great songs of that time, and unfortunately he is not that well known by the public and not given due credit. He contributed to a lot of artists from the Tropicália movement like Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso and others. Everything he put his hands on was of great quality. He was probably another genius.
In portuguese the words have a classification about the strongest syllable. It's classified from the end to the beggining, that way: The word that have the last syllable as the strongest is called oxítona, when it's the syllable before the last is a Paroxítona and the syllable before is a Proparoxítona. One of the most beautiful things in this music is that all the final words of the phrases are Proparoxítonas.
The classic poets used to call words this way: Last syllabe (oxítona) - aguda. Last but one syllabe (paroxítona) - grave. Last but two syllabes (proparoxítona) - esdrúxula.
It happens in spanish too, wich is confusing to those who don't speak it from born. Yes, Chico and Lula have been friends for so long. Chico's father was one of Work Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores) founders along with Lula in the earlie 80's.

Hello to any fellow RTGame fans who came from the New Earth video to listen to the song fully! The tonal shift at 1:52 is absolutely jarring in an amazing way, and the ensuing chaos of the lyrics that proceed it really hit how monotonous life can get. The way "may God pay you" is turned on it's head from a blessing into a curse is particularly harrowing to me.

What a masterpice! if Chico was from the US he will be a world class singer ( he is anyway) but not well known to the general public, I had the chance of being in a live show in 1976 and I will never forget the emotion i felt back them.

The syntatic,poetic depth and the different efects of meanings that music endoe, can't be transposed as a whole in an translate because It's extremely unique from portuguese language,and by the way,is amazing. For exemple,I made this following poetry in portuguese and I'd never be abble to produce it in english. The translations was impeccable, but one must be born again, and in Brazil to be able to understand the richeness , preciousness, enchantment, detailed masterpiece and wonderful constuction of the rhymes and the tricks of meanings. Pra letra em inglês, sinto que “Deus lhe pague” seria melhor compreendido se dito como God bless you (mesmo que isso signifique Deus te abençoe, seria a forma que nativos de inglês falariam), mas é incrível que em nenhuma das duas formas escritas em inglês, se consegue passar o mesmo ar de ironia e revolta que Chico passa ao falar em português. A questão das proparoxítonas, os versos Alexandrinos, como traduzir isso pra inglês? A língua portuguesa é maravilhosa, muito mais completa e complexa na comunicação, e Chico mostra o quão mestre é ao fazer essa letra histórica. E poderia ser um nativo britânico que falasse português fluente… Sem ele ter vivenciado a vida no Brasil, fica difícil ele entender algumas nuances da letra que só nos conseguimos entender pelo Brasil ser o nosso dia a dia (o que faz a música ser ainda mais incrível, pelo Chico conseguir retratar tanta coisa dita e não dita pela música).
Poderia tb ser “May God repay you”. Estaria implícito o “karma”, tipo “May God repay you (for the evil you cause)”. Mas, realmente, p chegar aí é preciso conhecer o contexto histórico da música.

Como cada verso agradece por algum maltrato recebido, a intenção da letra vai além do trágico, definitivamente chegar ao sarcasmo. "Que D'us te recompense por isso" é até mais forte. "Recompensar" por maltrato é um sarcasmo claro, interpretável
Eu pensei em God Bless you, pela questão do contexto irônico de falar “Deus lhe pague”, mas é bem isso, fica difícil fazer a tradução, pq se vc faz literalmente, perde a ironia, se vc faz da forma irônica em inglês, pode ser que a pessoa não entenda a ironia… Língua portuguesa é incrível, tem certas nuances muito difíceis de serem traduzidas

Yes, you are kinda right. The song was written in very harsh times when everything and everyone was closely controlled by the militaries. This song must be understood taking this reality into consideration. Of course that it tells a history and the message it contains could be valuable nowadays. Besides that, he doesn’t really laugh at death, but shows how life and death can be so banal and indifferent. The hole song also criticizes the political moment, especially in the end.
It is a dark song, thanks to the slight mixing of phrases in each verse, it goes from a story of a honest working man who dies crossing the street to a drunken bum who inconveniences everyone because he died in traffic. Basically, the view of the military junta at the time. Callous, uncaring, unfeeling, and the final line vehemently wishing God to exact His vengeance on those uncaring people.

The life passion of mine is to become a poet ,writing poems in my mother language, thus reading Chico’s work really give me so many inspirations, and changed my perspective of writing poems. Although I can just partially understand the genius of this work, I always thought how can he wrote something so complex yet so beautiful, and not be a Nobel prize for literature winner, it’s greater than most work I’ve ever read, and trust me, I read a lot. As a Filipino who loves bossa nova and MPB, the thing that especially grips me about this is that, well, like Brazil, we too had a dictatorship in the 70s and 80s, and that the story described here is very similar to what actually happened to construction workers in a government project (only instead of one construction worker falling to his death, it was around 170 construction workers falling into a pit of cement and not able to get out.). Gripping song!

Brazilian here. I think every child has listened to this song in 5th grade to learn about "proparoxytones". Nowadays, I just feel like crying when I listen. I get chills every time. It just gets weirder and weirder, the words keep changing but the rest of the sentences don't, and it still makes sense in a chaotic way.

Are these technically rhymes? In English they wouldn't be considered rhymes, which requires that the last stressed syllable and everything following be identical. These all have the same stress pattern, but don't appear to be phonetic rhymes. Am I missing something?

Came here after watching Charles Cornell's video on Brazilian protest music, and man, I don't regret it. A very powerful song. I don't speak Portuguese, but thanks to the subtitles I realized that the final words are switched around in the second part. What a clever lyrical device! Swapping a few words around to give the text a different perspective. I'm sure the intricacy goes deeper if you understand the language and culture, but that trick just hit me as such powerful social commentary.

In 1971 He released "Construção", a fantastic studio album, in addition to this iconic and fabulous song of the same name from the album, others great songs make him of of the greatest artists in history of Brazil, songs like "Cotidiano", "Samba de Orly" and "Acalanto", he is like the Brazilian Bob Dylan and only a native and fluent in Portuguese language and with degree of repertoire and high schooling to clearly understand his work and that of other artists such as Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. In This song, Chico uses paroxytone words at the end of all the verses, and these correspond to about 10% of the words in Portuguese, something really impeccable and brilliant even from the linguistic point of view, apart from all the social and critical issues contained in the song about the political situation in Brazil in 1971.

This was made during the Dictatorship in Brazil (1964-1985) during that time there was a huge boom in construction, but that came at the cost of many, many deaths of workers. The song tells the story of a ordinary worker that died falling from the top of a building, unfortunately history repeats itself. Hence the loop, different stories with the same outcome.
The part were the song shifts the pace, Buarque is talking about the dictatorship and how people had to be glad for the privilege of breathing the polluted air and existing, because even that wasn't granted.
It's just a masterpiece, wish I could explain it better but I'm tired rn and my English is lacking because of that lol.

In my opinion he was one of the great masterminds behind a lot of the great songs of that time, and unfortunately he is not that well known by the public and not given due credit. He contributed to a lot of artists from the Tropicália movement like Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso and others. Everything he put his hands on was of great quality. He was probably another genius.

This song is so incredibly moving. I regret not listening to Chico Buarque earlier, but I am so glad that I have discovered him now. What an artist. I was reading about Lula and saw that they have a friendship. I believe Chico visited Lula while he was imprisoned. I look forward to digging into the massive amount of music from this man.

The tonal shift at 1:52 is absolutely jarring in an amazing way, and the ensuing chaos of the lyrics that proceed it really hit how monotonous life can get. The way "may God pay you" is turned on it's head from a blessing into a curse is particularly harrowing to me.
Beautifull song, and for those like me who try to learn portuguese this is a great tool to acquire descriptive vocab and grammar.
This song has complex "language puzzles" and cultural criticism... I believe isnt the best song to study portuguese.
Definitely, it's not a song to beginners. This song is in fact a poem with very advanced grammar embedded in.

What a masterpice! if Chico was from the US he will be a world class singer ( he is anyway) but not well known to the general public, I had the chance of being in a live show in 1976 and I will never forget the emotion i felt back them.

this masterpiece is extremely underrated
The syntatic,poetic depth and the different efects of meanings that music endoe, can't be transposed as a whole in an translate because It's extremely unique from portuguese language,and by the way,is amazing. For exemple,I made this following poetry in portuguese and I'd never be abble to produce it in english. It's turns out that "ser" and "estar" which have different meanings,in english is expressed by just "to be" verb without none conjugation and it's become the language very simple.The same as I'm learning english being a portuguese native,I recommend each one do that same,because portuguese,although complex,it's justly wonderfull !

Pra letra em inglês, sinto que “Deus lhe pague” seria melhor compreendido se dito como God bless you (mesmo que isso signifique Deus te abençoe, seria a forma que nativos de inglês falariam), mas é incrível que em nenhuma das duas formas escritas em inglês, se consegue passar o mesmo ar de ironia e revolta que Chico passa ao falar em português. A questão das proparoxítonas, os versos Alexandrinos, como traduzir isso pra inglês? A língua portuguesa é maravilhosa, muito mais completa e complexa na comunicação, e Chico mostra o quão mestre é ao fazer essa letra histórica. E poderia ser um nativo britânico que falasse português fluente… Sem ele ter vivenciado a vida no Brasil, fica difícil ele entender algumas nuances da letra que só nos conseguimos entender pelo Brasil ser o nosso dia a dia (o que faz a música ser ainda mais incrível, pelo Chico conseguir retratar tanta coisa dita e não dita pela música).
Não certo disso, mais na minha opinião "may god pay you back" é mais appropriando em contexto, como um tipo de vingança divina
Poderia tb ser “May God repay you”. Estaria implícito o “karma”, tipo “May God repay you (for the evil you cause)”. Mas, realmente, p chegar aí é preciso conhecer o contexto histórico da música.

Eu pensei em God Bless you, pela questão do contexto irônico de falar “Deus lhe pague”, mas é bem isso, fica difícil fazer a tradução, pq se vc faz literalmente, perde a ironia, se vc faz da forma irônica em inglês, pode ser que a pessoa não entenda a ironia… Língua portuguesa é incrível, tem certas nuances muito difíceis de serem traduzidas

I speak Spanish and from what I picked up from this , is the song in itself sarcastic or burlesque in a dark way? Because it has that Latin dark tragic way of laughing at laugh like the Mexican way that a skull (calaca) is always grinning even in the face of death , I love it but I had that question its a great song , great atmosphere
Yes, you are kinda right. The song was written in very harsh times when everything and everyone was closely controlled by the militaries. This song must be understood taking this reality into consideration. Of course that it tells a history and the message it contains could be valuable nowadays. Besides that, he doesn’t really laugh at death, but shows how life and death can be so banal and indifferent. The hole song also criticizes the political moment, especially in the end.
It is a dark song, thanks to the slight mixing of phrases in each verse, it goes from a story of a honest working man who dies crossing the street to a drunken bum who inconveniences everyone because he died in traffic. Basically, the view of the military junta at the time. Callous, uncaring, unfeeling, and the final line vehemently wishing God to exact His vengeance on those uncaring people.
