I attended the College in 83/4 plus continued part time for many years. I first met Khansahib in San Anselmo 1970 before the College began. My love of Sarode came from buying a 33rpm record of Raga Todi and Lajwanti by Khansahib in 1966. I shifted from guitar to Sarode, now I'm back with guitar because I can still make some music. I have since retired from playing Sarode (2 years) ago.
I don't know what to say , just very thankful to the college, as an maihar student , I had this feeling that just once I would witness khansahib playin and learn from him but as he left this materialistic world and ascended to heavenly abode in 2008 and I was born in 2008 , so logically it was impossible to learn from him but this video helps so much , just the feeling of that baba is teaching me....I'm in tears , iam very thankful to aak college of music the handler of the RUclips channel for uploading this tresure 🙏🏼
Wah! I mean, this is one of the major benefits that we are able to enjoy because of these recordings -- getting to learn far beyond the physical form. What a beautiful message here! Thanks for taking the time to write this out and share it. Please reach out to us, and let us know how your studies are going. If you're turning 17 in 2025, you are very much helping keep the music alive 🙏! All the best to you 🌱
Thanks for this! Building up the video library sounds fantastic. I attended the college in the mid-2000's, and while I did not study with Khansahib directly, he was still around and his presence was/is always felt. Such a place of joy, positivity, and the highest musicality.
Do you remember who you were studying with at the time? We definitely have quite a lot left to do. However, we have many more that are like this. This was simply one of his classes at AACM. Powerful! There are some really beautiful uploads of baba teaching his students more in a one-on-one kind of class. If you look up: Ustad Ali Akbar Khan: Lesson in Raga Manj Khamaj, you can hear him teaching the late Geoffrey Lipner on sarod. It is that back and forth style -- more focused on playing rather than explaining via words. Thanks for this 🙏
There have been many other great sarod exponents and maestros. But Khansahib's sarod had the sweetest sound of them all. It was like the Divine was playing through him.
We are absolutely beyond lucky that we have so many masters of this music! How incredible is it that we can access these recordings on RUclips? Thank you for sharing such sweet words about baba!
@ Truly, yes! For all its otherwise questionable choices, RUclips has given enabled us to relive and immerse ourselves in some of the greatest exponents of music of all genres. In a way, it represents all of humanity, our frailties, our faults, and above all, the incredibly amazing genius of our species.
I had the great privilege to learn from Khansahib for only one summer, due to my circumstance and also my limited musical capacity. However, that summer was life-changing. Among other amazing experiences, one day I saw this sarode opened up for repairs on a workbench where I was being taught instrument repair. Thank you for sharing these treasures.
Oh! When were you studying at the school? Seeing the sarod with the plate and skin off is definitely something to experience. This is really special to read. Thank you for sharing this! Although, limited musical capacity is not the term we would prefer to use! We hope you are still playing/singing.
@@AliAkbarCollege Thanks so much. I do still play! In fact, over the past several nights I have been tuning and enjoying a fine swarmandal. Since that summer in 1989, I have had the great fortune to accompany many of India's masters on taanpura (Pts. Rajan and Sajan Mishra; Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia and son Rakesh, w/ Yogesh Samsi; and so many others...), in concerts big and small. Having been the "first repair apprentice" at AACM (invited by and trained under Brian Godden), I continue to repair Indian instruments, including most recently, the veena. It was a prompt by Pt. Ravi Shankar, whom I met and spoke with after one of his concerts, soon followed by Brian's invitation to train in the repair shop that same summer, which led to one of the most transformative experiences of my life. I will forever be grateful.

Are you still using sarod technique on guitar though? Keeping it alive either way 🌸
