"We the lab rats, you built the projects for/ Now you want your hoods back/ I guess if you could rap, you would express it to, that PTSD we need professionals/ You know what pressure do, it makes the pipes bust/ From schools to prison yards they trying to pipe US../" Common is that dude we need in the hood, the kind who makes it OUT and STILL speaks for the people in the forgotten ghettos. Mad respect for this man, some probably won't even get the big fuss.
You know this is dropping this year though? It's not about what year it was made, or when the creator was born. It's all about the dedication to the culture of hip hop and the art of rapping. People are saying that Kendrick Lamar is following or influenced by artists such as Common. I say that's a compliment to his style because if you're not grounded in the history of Hip Hop, you're going to be a slave to the industry. If you're not dedicated to the art of the rhyme, you're going to be relegated to standard ass shaking bootie bouncing material. Nothing's wrong with that, if that's what you want to do. But don't try to label that bullshit hip hop.
Honestly, any kind of material is trash if it is not done creatively. For example, I don't mind druggie songs per se, but many have no creativity, just I sell packs or smoke loud or drink lean. But then songs like Leanin'(Only & Ill album) say similar things but do it creatively and even delve into deeper issues(much like Swimming Pools). I would beg to differ that unless you take those influences to heart, you'd be a slave to the industry. It sounds silly, but knowing you may meet that person who influenced you to a large degree(for Kendrick that would be Tupac and Common), you bear with the bullshit a bit longer than if you bared it alone. Majority of Hip Hop where people just make hits but nothing though-provoking(Drake, Future, Young Thug, Chief Keef, Desiigner, etc. Unfortunately, Kanye has joined this list with Yeezus and TLOP) are more what I classify as Hip-Pop and artists like Common, MF DOOM, Kendrick, J Cole and many others are current Hip Hop.
Common is one of the greatest rappers to ever pick up a mic. I swear Can I Borrow a Dollar?, Resurrection, One Day It'll All Make Sense, Like Water for Chocolate, Be, Finding Forever, and The Dreamer / The Believer are all classic albums. Nobody's Smiling has some cool tracks, but hearing Common spit here gives me hope he's hungry again and filled with knxwledge. I cannot wait for his next album!
Electric Circus is a favorite of mine. But you are correct. Common himself said that he had not felt this inspired since Dilla passed. The first time I heard Black America Again, Common snapped, Common is angry, Common exudes that passion that black men are known to have, that is often used against us. I'm excited for the album, as he's actually dropped two singles
There's so much to be digested in just these two verses. I return to this time and time again and pick out something new every time. Common is one of the most important rappers ever and he's proving he can span decades/generations.
I was driving to work this morning and I heard this and I promise it stopped me in my thoughts and literally brought tears to my eyes!! HE IS SPEAKING... LISTEN!!!
Common is such a pro, didn't fuck up, made himself sound clear, enounciated his wordz, not too many rappers can do this. Common Sense has never sold out that's why I respect him, he does it for the people.
Naw its too easy to talk that gun talk. I'm an 80's baby and really only listen to the old school late 90's early 2000 shyt so for ex. Common/jay-z/Kanye grown man bars style never really caught on with me, but wit all this garbage lately, makes me wanna fk wit common. artists like common make the statement that hip hop is still alive, at least on his album haha.
King Kendrick I'm a big kendrick fan but TPAB was overrated. I'd rather listen to Section 80 or GKMC albums. Some of common albums are on the same level like Go and Finding Forever. They're classics
Common is a legend. He embraces all of the classic pillars of hip hop properly. His lyrics are well thought out from a poetic and socially relevant perspective. His voice is poignant as well, delivering both feeling and conveying presence. Having seen him live a few times, he freestyles, break dances and puts on an amazing live show with a full backing band. I had the chance to meet him after one of his shows, despite how tired he was, he signed every Common CD I had, which is all of them, as well as my Common "Finding Forever" and "Be" album shirts. He's humble too, having looked at my copy of 'Electric Circus' and saying I don't know too many people who have this. My favorite Common albums is "Like Water For Chocolate."
one of the most underrated of all time. never heard an emcee literally reinvent themselves from album to album like common. looking forward to the next project.
I've never listened to Common's music until recently, but I've always like him in general. It blows my mind why I didn't start listening sooner. This man is a beast!
Aced it as usual. Common is unquestionably one of the top elite MCs. Up there with the likes of Rakim, Nas, Kool G, BDK, Biggie, Big L, Scarface, Big Pun, Black Thought, Andre 3000, Eminem, GZA, Ras Kass, Redman, Pharoahe Monch, Chino XL, Immortal Technique, Aesop Rock, Gift of Gab, etc.
OH MY GOODNESS!!!! Much respect!!! 1 of the best writers in the History of the Art!!! Cant wait for the project!!! Salute!!!! Hope to see you soon out in Johannesburg again!!!
Common is incredible. I remember being in high school trying to get my friends to listen and they weren't down, but now the most popular Chicago rap is "conscious," and I love it.
Right, that's them grown man bars. Fools aint ready. I'm an 80's baby so I'm still stuck on the late 90's early 2000's shyt. He's underrated cuz he aint got braids, doesn't sags his trousers to the floor (or these days wear skinny jeans) and doesn't talk about cars n jewelry in every verse. Hip Hop is really dead. Whatever the style he spittin here is in a different tax bracket, don't even know what to call it lol.
Yes...Yes Blackman! CONSCIOUS COMMON.....Love you Kingman! Raise up the conscious...Raise up our people! Look forward to seeing you at the ABFF! Hotep!
Common one of the realest, top 10 MC
Yep
no doubt🙌
Definitely. He's my #2.

+RinaPinxz22 who's #1
"We the lab rats, you built the projects for/ Now you want your hoods back/ I guess if you could rap, you would express it to, that PTSD we need professionals/ You know what pressure do, it makes the pipes bust/ From schools to prison yards they trying to pipe US../"
Common is that dude we need in the hood, the kind who makes it OUT and STILL speaks for the people in the forgotten ghettos. Mad respect for this man, some probably won't even get the big fuss.
That verse was so powerful it gave me the chills. Damn we need this in our music.
90's hip hop WINS AGAIN
It will ever win
ALL DAY
No, REAL HIP HOP wins again. Dates / time frames don't make it real

ALL I HEARD WAS STRAIGHT FACTS COMING OUT OF THIS MANS MOUTH
That's them grown man bars. That's why he's so underrated, to many chil-len (children) can't comprehend
+ucnhtmenow1 I can comprehend everything he saying but yet again I'm on another level for my age (17)
Humble yourself before someone humbles you.
if you can appreciate Common and MF DOOM, you are well beyond 17. Some reason, both get underrated so much.
+Kalamite I appreciate both of them, as a matter of fact comm is my favorite rapper ever, and I'm 14 😂
I cannot wait for his next album!
beanie0112 Nah, his other albums are alright, honestly. I just mentioned the amazing ones that I recommend to people.
Your DP just made me go back and play liquid swords from the top
I think its funny you didn't mention Universal Mind Control lol I wouldn't either!
Electric Circus is a favorite of mine. But you are correct. Common himself said that he had not felt this inspired since Dilla passed.

People ask why he in my top 5 smh. Easy to talk that gun talk

Man Common is truly one of the greats.
Common & Black Thought the dopest ever
Common is a legend. He embraces all of the classic pillars of hip hop properly. His lyrics are well thought out from a poetic and socially relevant perspective. His voice is poignant as well, delivering both feeling and conveying presence.
