The Philosophy of Dune

- Опубликовано: 9 июн 2024
- Destiny is not a matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for. It is a thing to be achieved. Dune, at its core, asks philosophical questions that challenge our understanding of power, ecology, destiny, and human nature. What does it mean to hold power, and at what cost does it come? Dune plunges into the depths of ecological philosophy, prompting us to ponder our relationship with the environment and the consequences of exploiting natural resources. Are we at the mercy of destiny, or can we forge our own paths in the face of predetermined prophecy?

"The mystery of life isn't a problem to solve, but a reality to experience"
it is also a lesson to be learned.
What does that mean exactly?
@@jimmyfaulkner1855go with the flow bro
@@nicolebarfuss3067& Wisdom isn't "Knowing something = Lesson", but DOING("it"). There also is no starting or stopping, only doing.
My 2cents that I am currently transmuting, Transforming(Myself) to actual "wisdom". But who knows? "I know nothing" heard my buoi Johnny Snowy!
I do not know who you are. But I love you. The letters keep passing on and on. It is a lesson that helps each of us to Set Ourselves FREE. Nobody Else can.

"I wrote the Dune series because I had this idea that charismatic leaders ought to come with a warning label on their forehead: *May be dangerous to your health*. Charismatic leaders tend to build followings, power structures that tend to be taken by people who are corruptible. *Power attracts corruptible*. Dune is conceived as a planet that is totally desert, so the water on it is a metaphor of oil here, clean air, potable water itself, a metaphor for these shortages that we are encountering and the story is told in terms of people who are recognizable, but they live in a culture that is somewhat... different." ~ Frank Herbert Interview on Dune

Thank you! Knowledge IS power & Lack of knowledge is Lack of Power. 🙏
A few corrections regarding lore:
-The people of Dune don't live just 10.000 years into the future. It's 10.000 A.G., which means after the Spacing Guild acquired its monopoly over Interstellar Travel around 11.000 A.D. Dune takes place more than 20.000 years into the future.
-Paul also can't see into the future in the classical sense. He just has all memories of all people who ever lived and can calculate the most probable outcome for any situation based on every scenario that ever happened.
Yeah I feel like people who haven't read all the books aren't ready for how high concept shit gets after Dune: Messiah
Thank you!! I was just about to say this
Socrates has the greatest quotes
"I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing"
he also knows that he is the wisest man alive, who thinks that he knows nothing.

The best quote is the one without words. That is "Wisdom". Deeds do speak louder than ANY words. Stay Strong brotha.

“There is probably no more terrible instant of enlightenment than the one in which you discover your father is a man - with human flesh.”
― Frank Herbert, Dune
I'm super stoked the movies that have come out have managed to capture the essence of book that feels almost impossible to film. I'm even more stoked that you made a youtube video essay that managed to capture the philosophical essence of a fiction book (my favorite fiction book) that contains some of the deepest and most eternally applicable questions about exactly what it means to be human.
Well done man & I really hope this encourages more people to pick up the book.
1:12 They live over 20,000 years in the future. It's over 10,000 years since the Butlerian Jihad
And I think it's after the guild created travel, which is sometime after the jihad. Yea that statement in the video inflamed my Dune geekness
@@quentinfool the butlerian jihad happened around 200 years before the creation of the guild
Which is why it’s AG (after guild) and BG (before guild) not BBJ (before butlerian jihad) and ABJ (after butlerian jihad)
Love this kind of video, do make more videos with your philosophical reflections on movies and books.
Small correction, but Dune does not take place 10,000 years in the future. Dune takes place in the year 10191 AG, AG standing for "After Guild", when the Guild was established and controlled space travel. Based on the Dune wiki, the events of the Dune saga takes place 25,000-30,000 years after our current time. Excellent video though.

I read Dune ( Messiah, Children of, back-to-back-to-back) when I was in my teens 16/17 years old. It blew me away, still one of my favourite series of books. The idea about ancestral memories intrigued & challenged me the most. (Have subsequently learnt Jung got there first). Nevertheless, we all value our individuality, but the information we carry in on our genes begs the question just how different are we from our immediate family & ancestors. Sure, physically, we are unique & each generation faces challenges of their time, but are the responses & actions any different from responses/actions our forebearers. I personally feel my thoughts and actions are mere extensions of my ancestors. So, I believe I'm an accumulation of identity tethered to an unbroken chain that resonates back through time, a paradoxical feeling of fear & reassurance.

Please make more philosophical videos like these, I really love the earlier philosophical videos of yours.
I like that line that Jamis has where he's talking to Paul in on pf his visions
"Life isn't a problem to solve; it's an experience to be had" or something like that. Genuinely inciteful and ive also thought of that same exact thing which made it resonate with me
The mystery of life isn't a problem to solve, but a reality to experience. A process that cannot be understood by stopping it. We must move with the flow of the process. We must join it. We must flow with it.
It's paraphrased from the book, but I think it goes even further back from other philosophers, possibly Zen since Herbert was very close to that.
@@MrDoctorMabuse Thanks, thats awesome
Loved this video. Would absolutely love more such content ❤
another amazing video with beautiful editing. i’m on my way to see the second movie, perfect timing!
yeah please give more movie/series/book philosophy videos!
Topic suggestion: The philosophy of "NO LONGER HUMAN" - by osamu dazai. I already watch a lot of reviews and such but I want to hear your thoughts on it.
Love & Gratitude brotha. I've been around you and your own personal growth & evolution for a while through your YT creattion/vids. Stay AWEOSOME!

I think we can all agree that this style of video is pretty amazing and I personally would love to see more of it
Such a great channel. I love what you’re about. Thank you for doing these ❤
good format mate. really enjoyed it.
I like this type of video by you. I am a huge Dune fan and have read I believe all the novels in the series. There is so much more to it than even you describe. Would love to have a conversation about it sometime.
U should get the bool 10 laws of power ! its a philosophy book on how to "be closer to your enemy" or how to use people in a way that would benefit u. 100% recommend, a video on it would be really good ! keep the good work, I foloowo since ur 130K subs
I have never subscribed this fast, the video is beautiful and thought provoking, I loved it.
Movie suggestions:
1: Carol and the end of the world
2: Annahilation
I would also add Attack on Titan even though it is a series since it deals with similar themes as in Dune
Yes please!! This was so good! Can’t wait to hear more about your other favorite movies 🤓
Loved it! Please do more of these! I would be interested in seeing your take on the original Star Wars.
something i have gathered from the beliefs of my religion, is that we believe that everyone has a pre-ordained destiny, but it is our choice to rise to it or not, it is up to our free agency if we become something glorious, like God wants, or not. a note, man cannot frustrate the work of God, man can only frustrate the work of man.
I love this approach. Make more of this please
Thank you for the deeply thoughtful interpretation of Dune
seeing this side of the movie made me wanna watch it again but this time looking at it from this perspective, trying to realize and understand it deeply. i really appreciate this video man i loved itttt
"The mystery of life isn't a problem to solve, but a reality to experience. Deep in the human unconscious is a pervasive need for a logical universe that makes sense. But the real universe is always one step beyond logic." - Frank Herbert, Creator of Dune
This is phenomenal, thank you. If it interests you, a similar philosophical video essay for the Matrix would greatly be appreciated
Worthy of an Aperture Video ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
You missed mentioning about Paul's first child. His death in the raid was the factor that determined him to "embrace" the Jhihad.
Yeah, which kinda sucks how they cut it from the movie

Dystopian future movies are always something else, tbh,
To ask what we offer the universe is to assume that the universe cares what we offer. If humanity's will is to survive, that is the priority until the universe shows us that its will (if such a thing could exist) is more important than our own.

Here is an other one, just for fun, even if no one reads it....
When you look back in time (or as he does forwards), regrettable events start to take place.
is humanity really worth while the saving, when everything has to come to an end eventually ? we innovate, but does it benefit the universe or just our self interest. ?

Life is unpredictable and You have no control.
Not true, it’s a matter of choosing to be responsible for yourself selfishly or other selflessly. If you live for others what are you willing to sacrifice to achieve the necessary power to safeguard or empower your designated community by any means necessary? Of course you can just pursue peaceful mundane existence, allowing your environment to function without major inputs from yourself. Then there’s the 3rd option where you pursue power for your o wn selfish reasons without any restrictions from external forces beyond them being the means to the end of your own accumulation of power and privilege. Free to do as you please, regardless of anyone else ability to stop you from doing what you desire. Of course one may choose balance of each however one must choose a majority, even if by 1%. Life is not defined by solution only trade offs. How do you choose to respond to the factors instigated by those who exist in the present and the past? How will you adapt to the unseen order of cause and effect? Are you willing take away others privileges for your own personal gain? Do you possess the willpower and resourcefulness to rise above your weakness in the pursuit of strength? Are you willing to go to war with the world, if necessary in the pursuit of a dream that you hold so dearly to your heart? Are you capable of accepting the cruel brutal realities of God’s universe, that all living beings must participate in to carve out an existence? Will you create your own purpose, or will you adopt a pre-established purpose? What skills and knowledge will you accumulate in your pursuit for the right to exist?
@@The_preserver_x16 did you know you were going to be born? Did you know you were going to live this long? Did you know you were going to lose something or someone precious to you? Did you know that one step could take you to the right path or the bad one?
Yes, you do have to be responsible for your actions. We have little to no control over most of the things in our lives. That makes it unpredictable.

Very nice video, I wish you`d make one about Halo.
Wow, this came out some days ago... it has been announced in a video from a year ago that I just watched. Time travel!
dune really is something more than just another mpvies. You can apply this to a lot of things in life. Everything has some kind of philosphical aspect in life. Everything.
Just watched it

Before I watch this: Are there any spoilers for part 2 in this video?
I don't think Paul got to choose between "continuing the path towards suffering, or ending it and end the human race". I believe this is more of a Leto II choice.
Paul's choice is mostly between his own death and moving towards Holy War and humanity suffering - he navigates the possible futures trying to optimize the chances of survival for him and his loved ones.
Watching dune right now!
Eye did enjoy this video, thank you!!😳👉🏾👈🏾
You are your own destiny……
- Master Oogway
I would like a definition of "Predestination", excellent movie about time travel, put simply?
predestination is usually considered to be set forth by some higher being or force before we are even born. for instance, in "Mormonism" it is said God set forth a preordained plan for each of his children (preordaination is a form of predestination), but it is also said that we have free agency to choose if we will take the plan and become truly the best version of ourselves or not. in Calvinism, God made a predestined plan before any human was made, such as what we will do in life, and where we will go after. predestination can vary from religion to philosophy or whatever your belief system is.
I think you should make videos about book it would be better suited because most of these movies are hypothetical while books are more realistic(when i say books i mean those with actual meaning not those fantasy novels ).
How do you make videos so fast
Think there’s an editing error at 1:39
Want more of this
Dune is such a cool movie thank you for making this video 👍
Yes we do like
bro you got editing mistake on 3:49 sunset comes from no where
Also at like 1:38
Some suggestions: Beef, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Perfect Days, Revolver
The video really makes you think. When we focus excessively on the future, we risk neglecting the present moment. Finding a balance between the two is essential.
I cant agree or disagree with you because everybodys understanding of something are rooted to their experiences and knowledge and self reflection of them,
So according to me dune is about exploitation of religion and belief in things like prophesy and god like figure when someone like paul is betrayed by emperor brutally by ending the whole bloodline of house atradies what paul eants is to reveange against emperor and teach them a lesson. So he leverages the superstitions planted by bene gesset to his advantage which he was not doing before due to his ethical concerns but he does it later because of a valid reason and comforting answer he gets after drinking water of life.
But what makes paul unique is he is atradies a very well ethically nurtured people, he is son of lady jessica bene gesset and he is harkonnen as well and he learns the ways of freman as well i mean he is human and at the same time very unique and smart risk taker and so on thete are many things that make him unique i can go on...
And also I love chani because all my views are close to what chani character does in movie she is spot on.
Hs is the only human who can go against bene gesset because he is paul
My suggestion would be:Crime and punishment
I thought you will talk about Leto II since 3rd and 4th book are more philosophical than others but getting the philosophical view of paul is also good.
Also the books that his son wrote based on Frank Herbert's manuscripts and notes are pretty good and stick to the theme.
Who knew that such an underrated film could have some very important philosophy to it.
what do you even mean "underrated"?
Better than tv
There is destiny in the sense that some things happen independently of your actions. But precisely because of your actions you may be favored by destiny. For exemple, in Netherlands, the dikes and the dams allowed for a destiny otherwise impossible.
