Just last week I read about a woman who spent $34.99 at Goodwill for a statue bust, only to eventually discover it was 1st century Roman, and had been lost during WWII. The lady worked hard to find out what it was, and then said she was kind of sad she didn’t get to keep it. I’m not sure, but it didn’t seem like she got any kind of reward, maybe they cut her a check for $35 for her time and expense.

Well, missing artwork thought lost forever sometimes turns up in some odd place. There was some woman in France(?) who had a small painting by one of the masters hanging in her kitchen for something like 40 years. Then there was the Roman bust that turned up in a thrift store (Charity Shop for you Brits) for $35...turns out to be from ancient Rome and was looted from a German Museum after WW2. It's on it's way back to Germany. I don't think the German Government is even going to give her her $35 back :(

I used to have a very large, somewhat older book about the Ghent Altarpiece and the art of Jan van Eyck. It had colour plates and little folding panels. I think the book was stolen by someone else from a private Chicago university. It came into my possession without my knowledge, and when I contacted them about it, they seemed confused about why I'd return it. It has subsequently been lost to me through unknown means. Fitting.

  • @DawnOldham

What an amazing story. Honestly, I feel the copy of the painting is a really kind gesture on the part of the artist who painted it. I’m sure at some point someone will accidentally unearth the original.

It’s St. Bavo not Bravo. There is no R in it. I would have used sawn instead of sawed. I loved St Bavo’S when we went to Europe. Ghent is beautiful and worth stopping on your way back from Bruges. Brugge is worth days and days of sightseeing.
