So many Johto leaders and trainers have normal/mundane fits with maybe 1 or 2 quirks in their design and then you meet Clair stomping those heels and demanding you notice her.
Fun fact: most character in Pokemon think that Clair is a weirdo to dress like the way she is. Notably in heartgold they're is a postgame event when you normally had to fight her and Silver with Lance as a teammate but instead you fight with Sylver against the 2 dragon trainer because he refuse to fight with someone who dress like her and in Master, Lusamine almost try to take her daughter away just because she was speaking with her and how Clair was dressed
Ha, poor Clair. Silver is really just a hater in general - and we know that Lusamine is a fashionable control freak, so I take it with a grain of salt :P
Johto's character design really leaned into "don't stereotype" to a degree. Jasmine wears something soft and feminine, Karen seems very happy and confident, and Bryce seems like a forgettable old man, and they all blindside you with their typing preference. Sort of communicating the idea that people are not flat and don't have to conform to type.
Reminds me of the quote from Karen where you fight with your favorite Pokemon. If we use that with clothing, it's like wear what makes you comfortable and happy, it doesn't have to conform your type specialty.
Can I appreciate that for some of them, a simple accessory is what they need to elevate their looks. And then we have Whitney completely changing her wardrobe to match her style better. I love that you decided to give her boots with daring high heels to match. So modern and so bold! 🥰
I prefer the format of going shopping over using AI personally. It really helps drive home the idea of applying real life fashion ideologies to fictional outfits and costumes that you're able to tie it to specific designers and brands with real clothing and accecories.
Pretty sure Bryce was supposed to be a typical unassuming japanese old man geezer. He doesn't give a shit about how people view him, he wears what's comfortable, and is hardened to the cold after years of life, and having a storied history hidden by his look that comes out when he actually fights.
Amazing video! I really like the outfit you gave Bugsy, it really feels like something they would have given him if he was designed today. I also checked out some of the brands you showcased (especially Orttu, they have some amazing stuff), thank you for inspiring me!
One thing to consider in some Pokemon characters' designs is that their Japanese names relate to plants as well as type specialties (if any), influencing some of their outfits and color palettes. In Karen's case it potentially could be the name of the Chinese quince, whose fruit kind of resemble the beads around her waist. And for Jasmine, her name refers to the Japanese mandarin, which looks like her hair ties.
i can tell you what is going on with pryce because i knew the guy. he is my grandpa. shorts, shirt and sandals no matter how cold it is, the guy would dive head first into snow in his undies every morning during winter, the man was crazy.
“We are about to go shopping at the newest PokeMall in Johto!” SAY NO MORE!!! Edit: Very nice way of improving Jasmine’s design without taking away her character, which was supposed to be a sort of a cute girly design wielding powerful steel types as an attempt to fight the stereotype of monstrous Pokemon being only for boys and cute ones for girls.
I love how you always dress to match the video topic. Really into the utility vest today! I haven’t seen Ortu before, really liking their pants and shorts 👀 Also, Karen’s original design is giving me simple gyaru style. I think it’s the bodycon dress and the hair? Either way, yes to that bag it’s such a good match for her.
Agreed so hard on Jasmine, her original look is so much better! I grew up with her newer design, and while I still love it, I think the Steel typing, and the contrast with her simple dress is done far better with her OG look than the remake. She's my favourite Pokémon character design, so my biases are probably showing a bit here :DD
I think Morty's scarf is suppose to be based on mismagius not gengar, Misdrevus was introduced in gen 2, same gen as morty and I always imagined him having one despite it not being on his battling team(which it totally should have been)
Any reason why you didn't do Ethan (The Johto male protagonist) or Lyra (Kris's replacement in the Johto remakes) For Jasmine, while I like both of her outfits I agree the white dress gets points for communicating her type, albeit in a subtle way. However, I think the remake outfit was intended to invoke the ocean and lighthouses (wavy hem for waves, blue dress for the oceans, white for the lighthouse, orange bow for the light; the player first meets her in the Olivine Lighthouse and there's a subplot where you have to help her before she can battle you. Also, in Gen 4 she takes part in pokemon contests, the pokethalon, and has a discussion with Erika about wanting to dress less plainly. So the look seems to be someone trying to be more outgoing and branch out into more bold and flashy styles but is still at heart quite reserved and modest. As for Pryce, this is a massive stretch but the original idea may have been he's so used to the cold that he can wear a t-shirt and shorts in a freezing gym, though I'm not a fan and the remake outfit is a massive improvement.
Lyra can't replace Kris for me :P - and Ethan was kind of worth featuring, but didn't feel like it. That Jasmine context is interesting. I admittedly care little for deep lore/dialogue - but it's rather human for a girl to want to jazz up her style, even if it doesn't align with her typing perfectly.
A couple (Steel and Ice) feel like the designers went through a phase where they tried TOO hard to not do the obvious thing (e.g. bundle him up in a parka, give her metal accessories everywhere), but to the detriment of their character. I definitely agree that even just a metallic belt would help so much without being in your face literal.
Hi X, loved this video! I first stumbled upon your analysis of Jojo characters and recently did my algorithm recommend your Pokemon villains video and I loved it! I love the niche you have exploring anime/cartoon fashion and your insight is amazing. subscribed!
The only thing about Bruno is he's a pure Fighting master that does not care about Fashion whatsoever. He's known to go into the mountains and train with his Pokémon hand to hand days on end, that top you wanted would absolutely get shredded and probably left behind from his training and I feel would get in his way. His body is the culmination of yrs of work and prowess.
@@XDF Oh, forgot to mention with him especially he's just old school. So that alone solidifies him. Cause a lot of the younger fighting type trainers like Bea, Marshal and Brawly look up to him but they have a sense of functional style in their fits.
Omg, thank you for appreciating the style that Kris and Jasmine brought. Jasmine's og look is so underrated and just a little accessorizing would have been exactly what she needed!
Hey X! if you were a gym leader, what type would you specialize in? What kind of outfit would you rock? Would it be synergistic with your type color or pokemon or would it be totally original?
@@XDF i already made this request but i would love for you to do splatoon, specifically the “idol” characters and their different outfits. They’re all very fashionable especially marina’s.
New sub really liking these vids. Didn't even know some of thedesigns of the villains in the previous video and was pleasantly surprised. I think Gen 5 is definitely one of the better ones designwise excluding the fact thatgen 5 had thebes games of the series. I definitely recommend you to look at dorehedoro be it the rather alright adaption or the manga. Just look up the art and you will see some very interesting designs, besides a crazy but still fitting magic story.
I really love Pryce’s original design tbh. I think him being a little old man wearing a t-shirt & shorts really sells him as a master of ice type pokemon.
I love Will so much as a character honestly, and I think his newer outfit is actually great because it accentuates his hips quite a bit and that isn’t something you see often enough with male Pokemon characters. You’re right that the top could be different, I think maybe the same one in white could have done him more favors (maybe gold trim on the sleeves to bring the vest together?) while keeping the pink pants, or even the shirt being a slightly different cut.
Yeah - it's the hips for me. Makes him feel disproportional, but a little androgyny doesn't hurt i guess. Your suggestions are interesting - could definitely help open up the upper body so it doesn't' feel so tight and stiff.
Ooooh Definitely interested in ORTTU as a brand! I've been wanting to get into fashion designers for me and my man but didn't know where to start looking. Those pieces look like something he'd be interested in so Imma do my research later 🤓 But this was also pretty fun! I'm still cool with ai giving us full outfit concepts, but having actual designers as ideas almost like, grounds the characters into reality a bit...And makes me wanna go shopping HA! 😁😁
whitney’s concept art had her originally be a baseball player i really want a dragon type trainer to have their capes be a flowing on the shoulder coat, Claire could serve a super fierce business chique, like show off your nepo baby privileges not just the attitude! (i love her gym outfit but im just saying she has potential outside of the gym)
I'm not normally super into fashion but I quite enjoy your videos on these topics and look forward to more of them. I was wondering, though, what you think of Janine, since I assume she was ovelrooked for her odd status of being a Kanto Gym Leader that's only in the Gen 2 games and their remakes (taking her father Koga's spot at Fuchsia Gym since he got promoted to Elite 4).
I think Karen's modern look is intended to be Umbreon-inspired, with the black and the yellow, but with the yellow as the main colour instead of the black. The... round things? Belt? Definitely evoke the yellow markings on Umbreon, as does the strong, straight line of black on the top (yellow on Umbreon). Also, I'd hazard a guess as to the artist's intention, that the white pants were chosen to approximate the colour saturation in her outfit on the lower body, from the bare-legged look in her original character design. Personally, I think it's a very successful design that makes its themes present but not too on the nose, while communicating that Karen as a character is supposed to be a lively, attractive, young woman, who cares about her appearance. Given the limited capacity in which the games have to characterise an impactful character, who you only see once in the narrative, just standing in a room and waiting to fight you, it's a really good design that does a lot of the heavy lifting in her characterisation. I'm kinda more coming from the character design angle, rather than the fashion angle, but I wouldn't be watching if I wasn't (armchair) interested in the intersection and cross-applicability between the two disciplines. It's interesting to hear what additional considerations might be made, if applying a real world lens. It's also pretty funny when the costumes range from "It's just a grumpy Asian grandpa," to "This belongs on a catwalk or red carpet."
A generous interpretation - but fair. Because she's a fan favorite and people wanted to see more for her, I really think it was a good excuse for a cute outfit with a color scheme almost inverse to her original dress. Interesting to see how interpretations vary based on primary interest.
Hi! New to the channel; long time Pokémon fan, and love your coverage and insight on fashion for each gen. Do you have any opinions on Eusine? I personally like how they added the diamond patterns on his suit in the remakes to match Suicune
Don't know if you're taking suggestions but I'd love to see you take a look at the outfits of Danganronpa characters, I have a feeling that you might like quite a few of them
9:00 not even changing to modern, just add some individual effects. It shows a respect for tradition with some themed personal touches. But gotta do it correctly otherwise it looks tacked on
Wait Im sorry but Im a little confused about what you wanted for Will??? The vid was great and I think a lot of these choices & changes are nice as someone with interest in character design and I might be missing something bc I dont know much about fashion but you mentioned so much on how you like his black suit and vest and then suggest it be changed to a chunky pink one like???? Plus Im not sure if it's the best idea to have Koga and Chuck wear the same clothing outside of the color, that could possibly make their designs too similar. And Im not sure if I want to see Pryce with that pattern on his scarf, their values are too similar and could easily blend in unless his jacket is made darker. However I do totally agree how Jasmine's lder flowier dress was wayyy better. Something I always thought of to also make the steel typing a bit more obvious was making her little weird hair accessories screws or nut or smth, like her magnemite. And if we wanted to have modern Karen look more like a dark type trainer I'd say to make her top resemble something like her old dress but the white pants be replaced with some knee length dark-washed denim. She favors the type bc they;re "wild" and "tough" so I'd say to have her design reflect that and give it a bit of an edge. As for Falkner, I agree on changing the pallette to be more light and turquoise could easily divest from any confusion of him being water or ice (the blues the water type tend to prefer are bright and a bit medium-darker in value while ice is very light in color), I also always thought his haori could be larger and look a bit flowier, but that could also totally be the fault of poor posing, a lof of gen 4 artworks have stiff poses, and he's supposed to be all elegent and shit so that might work out. Plus I've seen some ppl claim his clothing style resembles 'tengu' (bird demons) and I've noticed that they're often depicted of having fuzzy pom-pom balls on them, maybe they could be tacked onto the jacket. I really dont see how his and Bugsys hair are similar but I do prefer some of the older depictions of the big tuft of Falkner's hair that covers an eye being more eggagerated & pointy, as well as being darker and shinier, see:Stadium 2, the anime and the adventures manga. Plus I've noticed that in the older gen 2 artworks some gym leaders would wear the badges as pins and that should come back lul.
Sounds like you just disagree - which is fine obvi. I initially stated how the jacket gives him a stronger upper body frame - just like his original artwork. The jacket would go over the vest . . .
A bit basic (design-wise) but it is impressive that you covered a decent amount of ground with one brand as we saw with the martial artists and the likes. It'll make an interesting contrast with other cases like the Alola region (the footwear going to be an interesting example for where sandals and open-toed heels being more prevalent than in other regions, as well as the attire that checks out for a more tropical region). That or Hoenn, which to me is the peak of Pokemon design (but can the trainers, leaders and Elite keep up?). Ah, time will tell, looking forward to your next vid, X. But seriously, after a break from Pokemon, maybe Alola would do, gotta help ya boi make the heat a bit more tolerable. See ya next vid!
It would be cool if you did 5th gen as well. To my understanding, its supposed to be a somewhat America inspired region. Inthink the designs are cool, but it also gives a bit of cool at the time of release. Also Marshal has what you want from these fighting type trainers.
Morty having red-rimmed glasses to hint at Gengar's red eyes... yeah, that's an inspired choice, something so small but when you picture it it adds SO much. Have to say I'm a bit surprised Karens redesign went without much comment. Like, I agree she looks good in it but why is a 'Dark'-type trainer showing up with yellow top and white pants? The dark tones of her hair feels like the only "type-appropriate" element of her look, I preferred her older black dress-look and don't quite get the message of her remake look. Though one question regarding Will, or perhaps his choice of clothes more in general- necktie versus ascot, which is the winner? Is one clearly always better than the other, or does it depend on what outfit these accessories go with?
I did mention that Karen's original look fits the typing better 😉 She's giving electric now, but it's honestly the best style out of most characters 👌🏽 I recognize Will's original necktie from childhood, and I think it looks better. The ascot changed the tone of his outfit, and not in the most flattering way imo. I do love an ascot though - just depends on the style and context
Will we get more video game outfit videos? Maybe for more fighting games but all the Pokemon is fun. Where is the Street Fighter video? Mortal Kombat? Soul Calibur? Killer Instinct? Virtua Fighter? Guilty Gear? Samurai Shodown? BlazBlue? Fantasy Strike? I mean you could look at so many different characters.
I mean, yeah - but only so much that a one-man operation can cover - right? I may jump to street fighter ahead of others - I also haven't engaged with fighting games as much as much as what I've been covering. Patience is a virtue. ;)
@@XDF I would definitely recommend street fighter. It’s got so many great characters from icons to fan favorites. It’s a series that has a huge legacy of gaming firsts and they just released the latest version SF6 not that long ago.
There's too many shades of blue going on with Faulkner's newer designs. If I had no idea who Faulkner was, I would've assumed that he's running water or ice type Pokémon. At least with Winona or Skyla, who both rock shades of blue, you can see the hints of "flying-type trainer" in their fashion.
I don't know why you seem to be brushing off the dislike twords AI, it seems a little weird to push something on your audiance that they don't want or seen to be against?
could you make a video on how to dress like dragon ball characters please, specifically piccolo (he's literally me) for example what clothing to buy - i hate the cheap clothing that has the dragon ball style printed on the shirt, i want to actually dress like them not just cosplay Thanks XDF

A generous interpretation - but fair. Because she's a fan favorite and people wanted to see more for her, I really think it was a good excuse for a cute outfit with a color scheme almost inverse to her original dress.
Interesting to see how interpretations vary based on primary interest.
Liked the video firsthand, I already know it's gonna be a banger 😊
Thanks for having confidence in the content 😌
Hi! New to the channel; long time Pokémon fan, and love your coverage and insight on fashion for each gen.
Do you have any opinions on Eusine? I personally like how they added the diamond patterns on his suit in the remakes to match Suicune
yesssss more of this plz
Just discover you channel and its very interesting. Thank you for the video!
Thank you for watching
Love your videos
Thank you
Don't know if you're taking suggestions but I'd love to see you take a look at the outfits of Danganronpa characters, I have a feeling that you might like quite a few of them
You forgot to talk about gold/Ethan, Lyra, and Janine
I didn't want to talk about them . . .
9:00 not even changing to modern, just add some individual effects. It shows a respect for tradition with some themed personal touches.
But gotta do it correctly otherwise it looks tacked on
Fair - literally anything else would help
Very cool designs, IMHO, Pokemon artist does a great job revisiting their designs, I think they improved almost all the characters
There were definitely some strong and much needed improvements 👍🏽
The jacket would go over the vest . . .
I think I've seen Whitney wearing cow-print bikinis in fanart so often, I legit forgot what she actually wears 💀
🤨
Hey X, have you ever done a Video for One Piece? espiacally the movies have some cool fashion.
He'll most likely tackle it soon. It did lose in the tie-breaker against this vid (both had a 30% until a Persona vote was changed to Pokémon).
With your outfit in this vid you look like more of a bug-type gym leader than Bugsy
Interesting - thanks 😅
It would be cool if you did 5th gen as well. To my understanding, its supposed to be a somewhat America inspired region. Inthink the designs are cool, but it also gives a bit of cool at the time of release. Also Marshal has what you want from these fighting type trainers.
I'll be covering most of Pokemon over time as this series of content continues.
I did mention that Karen's original look fits the typing better 😉 She's giving electric now, but it's honestly the best style out of most characters 👌🏽
I recognize Will's original necktie from childhood, and I think it looks better. The ascot changed the tone of his outfit, and not in the most flattering way imo. I do love an ascot though - just depends on the style and context
I just have to say one thing, Karen in that black dress is better than her new outfit by far!
It lowkey is though - and fits her typing perfectly
I did years and years of martial arts. I agree that no shirt and gi pants is boring. The performance martial arts scene has so many cool outfits.
Thanks for seeing where I'm coming from. A little extra style never hurts. 👌🏽
Exactly - like, give us a little more than just shades of blue
Orttu Orttu Orttu :D All those Orttu looks are fantastic yeah you right
Glad you like that brand :D
XDF on Lorelei: No notes. 😀
I don't know why you seem to be brushing off the dislike twords AI, it seems a little weird to push something on your audiance that they don't want or seen to be against?
The data says otherwise. Naysayers are always loudest in comments. No drama please.
could you make a video on how to dress like dragon ball characters please, specifically piccolo (he's literally me)
for example what clothing to buy - i hate the cheap clothing that has the dragon ball style printed on the shirt, i want to actually dress like them not just cosplay
Thanks XDF
9:19 damn that's a cool outfit. I would 100% wear that and fight randos on the street lmao.
Lol - fighting in style 😎
I much prefer what you did in this video than the AI in the Galar one!
Thanks. I'll still be doing both 😌
JOHTO
"underwhelming" is the national vibe of johto
You will have to explain what part of HG/SS which are considered the best games in the series to this day is "underwhelming"
Pleaaaase do kingdom hearts
