I changed both inductors for good measure as these are common failure points in these old amps, and she's working good as new.

Have a McCormack DNA-125 amp that is having some problems too. It powers on but don't pass a signal to speakers while getting very hot at the right side of the chassis. Not so the left side.

Yes, and also does a tiny little piece of plastic. Especially on tapedecks.
Would love to have more videos like this. Im having this problem been staring at my board for weeks.
That tiny little inductor has a scorch mark underneath it, suggesting it's passed a crap ton of current and burned up. The 7812 that it supplies might be toast, or something on the 12 volt rail has shorted out as well. Be interesting to see what the overall damage was. Do a follow-up vid if you have time.
It wasn't actually a scorch, just left over flux. The regs are fine, I replaced both inductors and it passed endurance test. ☺
@@barevids That was an easy one then! Whenever I think I am onto a quick fix, it turns into a multi-hour marathon chasing shorted components.
I changed the playback speed to .75 and it was way easier to follow what he was saying :)

I can appreciate what he is teaching but a lot of knowledge about the circuit needs to be known first. This guy has studied the schematic and I suppose block diagram to know how it works and where his voltage should come from. This is the most important part and detrimental to troubleshooting . I wished I knew half of what he has forgotten , it would take me a week to go through that much trouble shooting but I am envious of such wisdom. Great video

Are you familiar with Memphis amps? I just bought one from a yard sale it's a old school Memphis pr600. I have power going into it and a good ground. I'm bench testing it but neither the power light or the fault light will light up. No spark touching terminals either. Fuses are all good. Any idea where to look?
I have an MB Quart Onyx 1500.1 D amp. I don’t have the one tester you have, I only have a multimeter. The amp turns on, the inputs seem to be good from a continuity test, no protection mode, and no sound… anyway I can figure out what’s bad on this thing with just a multimeter or do you know of known issues??

I would love to see this on the Apeg PF-500. There are a few hundred of those amps that power up but no sound. If you could find the "common" issue it would save many of them from the trash depositories. It seems its the PCB but the factory fix is to get a new board (which runs 200+ dollars....IF you can get one!)

I have a vintage Marantz pre stereo amplifier pm420 and it has been playing very well until earlier this morning when i was listening to a radio station and it made a single click sound and there was no sound at all so i switched it off for about 10 minutes and and switched it back on but still no sound please help me out as i am not good with electronics

What are you connecting your scope to ? Just one probe to the ground ? And you probing around with the other probe ?

Do you have any suggestions for me? Audiopipe 1800.1 I've got continuity between 12v and ground power terminals. I've removed all the mosfets and still have continuity across the board. Continuity was tested with the amp completely disconnected from any power.
I know it's a long shot, but i got a 80s hifi amp, a kenwood ka55, all works except sound. I took it apart and visually inspected it, no obvious faults. The visualizer works and responds to volume changes, it just makes no sound. Not even a pop. Any ideas to go from here? Waiting on a service manual
I enjoyed this video, i was wondering if you can help me with a spl z2x1600 it has a short i took out all the output transistor three of the mosfet but even with the absence of these power mosfets the empty slot still reads short

hi, i have a morel 5 channel amp that turns on but won't turn off even if i remove the remote wire. where do you suggest i start diagnosing?
My amp has a short circuit when I replace the output transistors the transistors gets blowing I can't find the fault so how do I find it
What could be the potential cause of my taramps bass 8k not powering on I did find that the remote terminal has a ground on it if I can find the cause of that I can find the problem the amp has always has sufficient voltage and it didn’t get hot or it never smoked I went to listen to it one day and it just wouldn’t come on. I’m assuming the ground on the remote terminal is the issue because as soon as I unhooked the remoter my second amp powered back on
I have an alpine Mrd 345 and the impeller on the fan has fallen down into the amp and was lodged between the crossover card and the case and I only get static now , any ideas

Iv got an old techinc system, the tuna works but tape and cd decks only put out a tiny tiny bit of sound! Can't hear it unless you put your ear to the speakers. any ideas folks??
I always do a visual inspection and sniff test before jumping into troubleshooting. You can see a burn mark on the inductor. Just another method to help get to the root cause.

awesome video. I would have a question on a problem with an amp that randomely does not deliver sound. when i feed it with very high input volume it turns the outputs on and keeps running. After I can even turn down the input volume and it keeps running without problems. Do you or some youtubers here maybe have suggestion on where to start searching? Maybe the Capacitors?
What amp is it. No it won't be the capacitors.

hi i have an amplifier that powers up and works fine for half an hour then it shuts down by itself. afterwards it would just switch on and immediately shuts down. i keep switching it back on and it'll shut down immediately . would u know what is wrong with it?
What should I check first? PG amp. Mosley’s are not shorted. Amp won’t power on. Connected to known-good battery, amp loads bat down to 4 volts and draws 1.5 amps. No obvious blown components.

What would cause my power Acoustik lt980 amplifier to work but vocals are playing thru the subwoofers? Amp has LPF HPF and Subsonic adjustments. If I switch to LPF I get no bass or sound
Lpf needs to be on. Maybe the switch is dirty, clean with 99% isopropyl

I have a Rockford fosgate p400-2 and the sound is choppy. It cut in and out. Never goings in to protect. I tried using a a six to rca to see if it was the cables. Same thing. I’ve ran the wires twice. And changed the speakers 3 times. Something with the rca output I would guess

what are the circle coli things and what do they do?
They are toroidal transformers that usually change a higher voltage to a lower voltage to power the circuit boards (which generally operate at low voltages). These toroidal transformers are often used in amplifiers due to their high efficiency, and smaller sizes.

what if the pre amplifier is good and the fets are good, but there is no signal getting to the port one of the ports.
Ok a year later lol so my amp is R1200 rocksford fosgate and it stopped working untill i found out if i put a little pressure on the gain setting knob the bass turns on as it should but when i release it goes off any tips on that? Or is the amp done
Very simple issue just need to clean or resolder the pot or switches

Hey sam i have a 6000.1 ds 18 amplifier it playing normal but when turn up it trip to protect i check everything and find nothing. I check the output driver ic but the number scratch off can u able to say whats the driver ic number
The amp isn't the issue, check your wiring

I’m sure you get lots of questions from people but I’d appreciate any suggestions from you. I have an old Crate B10 xl simple solid state amp that I’ve been trying to get working again for a couple of years. There isn’t any repair places near me and I searched all over online with no luck finding any similar problems like mine. I was playing it and all of a sudden zero audio, not even a hum, the fuse wasn’t blown and it still powers on. I’ve confirmed that the speaker is still good, I can’t see any signs of something that got hot or shorted, the jack inputs are making contact and all of the wiring is good, none of the caps look bulged and it doesn’t even make a sound when I touch the aux jack. I’m suspecting it’s a component on the circuit board but I can’t see a visible problems, I’ve tried testing everything with the knowledge I have, it makes a small sound whenever I touch two of the pins on the output transistor/mosfet so It might be that but I’m not sure. It might even be one of the many diodes.
If you really want to get into this, you want to use your multimeter and check all of the auxiliary voltages around the board. Check there is rail voltage present in the large rail caps on the output board, check you have bipolar auxiliary supply for the op amps on the preamp board, etc. You might find that some are missing due to crack solder or failed components in the power supply board.
Thank you for replying so quickly! I appreciate your suggestions and I will try the best I can to test what you mentioned. A couple added details is that it’s one circuit board and I have re-soldered all points with no luck.
Also the only testing tool I have is a digital multimeter.

@@barevids could you maybe tell me what the issue is to better explain it to a repair technician what happened was during playing I had a ground wire inside the enclosure come off the terminal and instantly threw the amp into a thermal protection

I have a brand new xtr 2500.1dz that got wet while not even wired up (nissan titan rear sliding window installed in a silverado but seal was leaking) and I sprayed electronics cleaner on the board thinking it would clean corrosion off but my amp comes on but doesn't have sound. Not in protection either

I think on the chassis. Anywhere it is grounded.
