Im in a few rounds shy of 600 and zero malfunctions so far. Ive ran it with Pmags although I also have the sabre mag which I have not used at all. Cool video, man!
In my opinion, it would run steel ammo because it appeared under gassed. it was sending brass back at 4-4:30 when a better ejection pattern should be around 3:00. The reduced pressure on the steel ammo probably didn't have enough ass to cycle
I'm pretty sure guns that are over gassed run steel ammo better. The lower pressures of steel ammo = less gas through the gas port and thus less back pressure to cycle the bolt. An under gassed gun will need standard/hot rounds to cycle properly.
When AK Operators Union did a test of their patriot rifle back in 2015 it was high gassed and it ran steel case just fine. Even when they ran sand through the bolt in the torture test.

They also tend to have larger deviation in powder between rounds. You mentioned the 20" gun had an adjustable gas system. My .300BLK PSA had very similar malfunctions. I noticed when you were firing from the prone, it failed to lock back on the empty mag. Could be the ammo, however it was ejecting all of the rounds towards the 4-5 o’clock position. On mine, it turned out the gas port wasn’t aligned properly from the factory, causing it to be under-gassed. That might explain why the rifle ran better when perfectly clean. Less friction. Might be something to check if you run into issues in the future. I’d be willing to bet it’s ever so slightly under-gassed.
the rifle length gas system on the 20" seems to not play nice with the tulammo. It makes sense, the configuration of the 20" seems geared toward a more refined shooter, probably expecting something more along the lines of mk262 or similar high performance, high consistent ammo. It is ejecting behind you, which tells me the bolt velocity is slow because the tulammo is too underpowered for reliable operation. for reference the 223 55gr Tulammo box says the velocity should be 2953 fps compare to the significantly higher performing m193 55gr ammo that should be ~3200 fps the carbine also seemed to eject the tulammo rearwards, so it seems to be on the edge of reliability/undergassed with the low-power tulammo. Given that both of these rifles are more "premium" from PSA my guess is that either PSA tuned the gas system to be soft-shooting and lower wear/tear on the components vs over gassing it to make sure it works with low-power steel case. For anyone that wanted to buy one of these rifles but shoot it with low-cost steel case ammo, it might be prudent to get a lightweight carbine buffer. Interestingly, the 20" rifle you show here looks like it comes with the Taccom 3-stage buffer system, instead of a standard buffer weight, which indicates that PSA was trying to make the rifle to be soft-shooting out-of-the box with full power loads, so it might be obvious that it wasn't intended to use under-powered ammo.

As I have been saying since these came out. An out of the box rifle for someone that's just starting? These give a great value. But the uppers at 899? For $100 more I get a Geissle complete upper when on sale for that.... so these are a tough sell. Why they don't give you a Pmag or a metal charging handle is insane
turn the gas up on the 20-inch. u said it had adjustable gas, the reason why the 14.5 ran the steel just fine is that the gas port is drilled closer to the chamber, giving slightly more gas than the 20. which is better for the reliability of loads that are not as hot as brass like Russian steel case. I can tell it is under gassed because it is ejecting the cases at like 5 O'clock.
Older generation psa rifle I have seems running steel case ammo fine. A friend of mine has a newer psa purchased post 2020. He got malfunctions just like yours.
I have a 14.5 Sabre with the Geissele rail & the Sabre lower with the B5 furniture, I have not had any issues with the rifle. Most people talk about the QC being poor, I'm not 100% convinced that's the whole story. I think the biggest issue is you'll see lots of folks new to firearms finding their way to PSA as a way to enter the hobby while saving some money and their lack of experience causes simple things like failure to feed (like in the video) to be customer service cases. I know from experience people attribute steel case/magazine issues as a "gun issue". They get on reddit, or find a youtube video and blast PSA for QC when it's not really a QC issue. I also think because they release so many types of firearms with tons of options we're sort of field testing for them. Don't get me wrong, I know they do have issues, the micro dagger is prime example, but they will absolutely fix the problem for the customer and eventually fix the problem altogether. Matt (he works for PSA) is a legend in their subreddit. He's so active and extremely helpful. If you're on the fence, I wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger.
Feeding issues with the long boy are from the longer gas tube distance.... longer gas dwell = lower pressure reaching the bolt. Cheaper ammo like Tulla is loaded to the bare minimum psi for cost savings... and its not typically ran in 20 inch guns.
Best review I've seen on these new rifles, thank you! TulAmmo failures look to potentially be an under gassing issue? Would have been a good opportunity to show case the adjustable gas block on the 20".
I’ve owned a couple of PSA guns and both had to be sent back for warranty repair because right out of the box they had defects that QC should have spotted before ever leaving the factory
I had a ruger ar556 mpr that wouldn't run steel cased ammo. Had run a lot of brass cased ammo through it and then it choked up on the steel even after a good cleaning. With it throwing the cases way back like that I'd say it's barely cycling the steel case ammo
Interesting that only the billet rifle has failure to feed on the steel ammo. Unless I’m mistaken, PSA hasn’t made a billet rifle before so this may be the result of their first try.
Naw. It's usually due to a gasing issue. Most commonly. Then the other issues could be the buffer and buffer spring weight combo. Also could be an issue with the chamber. But usually the gas. Gas block port might not be totally encapsulating the gas port on the barrel resulting in undergasing. The malfunction looks like a short stroke where the bolt carrier doesn't go all the way to the rear which would result in not enough inertia to feed the next round. Due to insufficient gas. Most common issue for failure to feed. Steel ammo is lower pressure than brass and steel casings don't expand upon firing. These two issues can result in failure to feeds. Lower pressure means the BCG won't go all the way back in some builds. The casing not expanding and jumping back a little bit (per usual for brass ammo) also results in less efficient ejection and therefore feeding.
Just made a video about my billet gun and I had the same exact issue. I guess I got to scrub the feed ramp a bit and see if it'll run but I was having those issued with steel and not as often but with brass.
I have been debating which one to get the forged or Billet, the 13.5 or the 16 or the 20 inch. Also which rail to get and so on and so on. Too many to choose from. I wish I had someone's video to view that had all the various ones from PSA so I could make up my mind
Can you speak on the adjustable gas block? Specifically, does the gas block have enough adjustment to keep the rifle from being overgassed while suppressed? How does the adjustable gas block work in this specific model? Just an adjustment screw? Different ports you have to order and install? Thanks for your time!
I'd love that rifle 100% if it weren't for that interrupted upper rail on the handguard. I put a flashlight on every one of my firearms that can accept a light mount, and with the built in grips on that handguard it would be near impossible to install a switch pad mount for the flashlight. Thankfully they do come with full upper rail handguards. I have an upper with an interrupted rail and had to install my switch on the side of the handguard, making it really awkward, but not in a horrible way, to turn on my flashlight.
I wonder if it was simply the grit of the new phosphate coating versus a gassing issue. The action sounds like 120 grit, and I'm deaf. Looks like it smoothed out after you polished off the ramps. "4 inches Pyle!"
Great review! I'm almost glad I can't afford one this year just to give it time to get a bunch out there. But pending any real issues this looks like a fantastic first AR without breaking the bank, or my marriage.
That Tula was ejecting at about 4 o'clock, I bet it was severely underpowered and the bolt was short stroking - that would explain the failure to strip a new round off the mag. For the partial feeds the bolt probably got just far enough back to snag the new round but didn't have enough momentum to bring it home. A liberal squirting of oil in the chamber probably would have helped in this scenario, such is life with cheap steel case ammo!
You can't use steel case ammo in 223 wylde chambers. You WILL have problems one way or another. I used to shoot a ton of steel case ammo and after a mountain of headaches I finally said no more. Definitely made me really good at clearing malfunctions though.
Guessing the problem with the steel case ammo is gas. The ejection pattern was around 5 o'clock. That would also account for the failure to feed problems.
Tula 5.56 is kinda underpowered, and you can tell by the 20's ejection that it seems under gassed. That's my guess as to why there were so many failures to feed. Maybe a lighter buffer would help?
I ordered from Palmetto for my first Ar-15 and they canceled my order. I bought along with it are some extra mags and ammo (which were delivered 😂) to test it because i was going to get it send straight to FFL that is also my range guy. Well, i guess it’s a sign that i shouldn’t be ordering anything from Palmetto anymore, im disappointed they didn’t even contact me about it being canceled. Thanks for delivering the ammo and i got no AR to shoot it with 😅😂.
Budget: an estimate of income and expenditure for a set period of time. Someone's budget could be $1 while someone can have a budget of $1,000,000. Affordable is more appropriate.
Seems like the tula is a little under powered. I could be wrong obviously but it seems to not give the bolt enough ass to get it back into battery. Seems like a really solid upper otherwise. Would love to see a multi thousand round review if you had time(any money).
Irrelevant comment here. Shooting gold dot at 100 yards, my Remington corlokts group tighter. At 200 yards, Speer gold dot is Moa or better while Remington corlokts seem to spread out as you would expect any group to do at a greater distance. Back to the sabre.

Man I wanna get a Sabre upper and start my first build soon but that ringing on the muzzle device is obnoxious.
Clearing the weapon before you ghost the trigger would be preferred to get a better idea of the hiperfire trigger's performance.
That Tula in the 20" seem to be a gas port problem, it may be a little too small.
20” bbl with mid length gas? WTH, why not use a rifle length gas system?
Curious, he did say adjustable gas block though. It does seem odd though.
Psa website says rifle length.
That long gas system on the 20inch gun takes a little more oomph than you're gonna get out of tula 55gr.
5:17 Nice!
I want one so bad
I will switch that Flash hider to a Smiths vortex A4
I want one
You can't use steel case ammo in 223 wylde chambers. You WILL have problems one way or another. I used to shoot a ton of steel case ammo and after a mountain of headaches I finally said no more. Definitely made me really good at clearing malfunctions though.
psa is what we used to call ghetto fab and i love it. ive had nothing but good luck with psa personally.
I may need to get one of those muzzle devices so my AR pings kind of like my M-1...
😂
Did I mis-hear him say a "mid-length" gas system on the 20" model?
Guessing the problem with the steel case ammo is gas. The ejection pattern was around 5 o'clock. That would also account for the failure to feed problems.
How does the Sabre compare to the JAKL. Is it more premium than the JAKL or just a different rifle?
Always excited for a unhinged Santa video
"I'm coming down the chimney boys!"
Still making my list!
Not a fan of the trigger tuned specifically for bump-firing. Kind of telling.
Whats a good compensator to replace the psa one I don't like the ding sound i hear cherry bomb is good but $$
Tula 5.56 is kinda underpowered, and you can tell by the 20's ejection that it seems under gassed. That's my guess as to why there were so many failures to feed. Maybe a lighter buffer would help?
I certainly don't blame the gun, that ammo's reputation is pretty well known.
Nice!
Your little song caught me off guard. Had me rolling lmfao
The ringing from the barrel is rough. Would a C grip or something else help eliminate that?
God damn he is a singing voice of an angel
I ordered from Palmetto for my first Ar-15 and they canceled my order. I bought along with it are some extra mags and ammo (which were delivered 😂) to test it because i was going to get it send straight to FFL that is also my range guy. Well, i guess it’s a sign that i shouldn’t be ordering anything from Palmetto anymore, im disappointed they didn’t even contact me about it being canceled. Thanks for delivering the ammo and i got no AR to shoot it with 😅😂.
I have built an Aero precision/ Ballistic Advantage and they do not like steel cases either!
Great !
Budget: an estimate of income and expenditure for a set period of time.
Someone's budget could be $1 while someone can have a budget of $1,000,000. Affordable is more appropriate.
Tula is not giving enough gas on the big gun has to do with gas port size an location on 20 inch
Seems like the tula is a little under powered. I could be wrong obviously but it seems to not give the bolt enough ass to get it back into battery. Seems like a really solid upper otherwise. Would love to see a multi thousand round review if you had time(any money).
My solgw nox doesn't make my barrel do that thankfully
More musical numbers please. Bravisimo!
Grazie mille!
Should I go Billet or Forged for first AR?
So what do you do with the palmetto ARs you already have?
I have a couple of standard AR PSA rifles with the better barrels and they have been 100%.
Irrelevant comment here. Shooting gold dot at 100 yards, my Remington corlokts group tighter. At 200 yards, Speer gold dot is Moa or better while Remington corlokts seem to spread out as you would expect any group to do at a greater distance. Back to the sabre.
The ringing reminds me of that superhero show where each superpower has a strange usually discomforting downside. Like the guy who teleports but rips a nasty fart every time. Its an otherwise lovely rifle (on paper) but it has that comical ring. It would almost be a sin to fix it.
Will that ringing sound disappear over time and use, or is there a fix that can be applied?
