In this video Dr. Guthrie addresses the 4 functional elements of preaching and how they are used in an expository sermon. The functionals elements are: explanation, application, illustration, and argumentation.
Too often preachers do not have a balance of the functional elements in their expository messages and therefore "over-preach" certain aspects. Utilizing the functional elements in a balances way will help the preacher communicate more effectively and the listener will be better able to understand what the preacher is striving to communicate.
