Thanks Jason. Very helpful. I like that lower tab for directed messages, and didn't realize until now that it worked like that. Beats all the right clicking. By the way, to anyone reading this, I keep my station on 40M JS8Call nearly all the time out of Central Florida, even though I don't QSO often. Feel free to test messages and relays on it anytime. More people should have JS8 running all the time to create a persistent network for messaging. I hope to put my solar powered 24/7 JS8 station on the air this winter. If enough people use the message features of JS8 and there is a network of relay stations, maybe Jordan will be inclined to implement automatic message routing in JS8Call 3.0.
@@Liberty4Ever That would be excellent. And with Gridtracker now being open source, there is talk again of connecting it up to JS8Call. It could be for more than just station location. It should be able to visualize most probable relay routes even offline using heartbeats. Add Jason's (KM4ACK's) idea of using heartbeats to locate the most likely Winlink station to connect to, and you have a pretty cool network of tools to work with.
Thanks for the presentation. I gave up on JS8Call due to the conditions on the 10m band. I had brief success with it over the summer. I'm taking my General exam on Wednesday and hope to try out JS8Call on 20m and 40m soon. It will be fun to test out the relays and messaging. Keep fighting the good fight and keep the content coming!
Good luck on the exam! You will find JS8 much better on 40M
10m should start to have some openings. i can work 80m-6m so if you shoot me an email (look me up on qrz for it) maybe i can make a contact with you. 73 KE0HMS in S.D.
I've been playing with JS8 relays and messages, mostly to encourage others to try these useful features, but I still learned some new tricks from this video.
If we use the JS8 advanced messaging capabilities and there is a persistent network of 24/7 stations to serve as a backbone network, maybe Jordan will be encouraged to introduce some intelligent networking routing features that automatically relay and store messages, similar to Automatic Link Establishment.
ah the old "if i had just one more radio i would". would love to have a permanent js8 station.
Thanks for the video Jason, excellent information. I have an interest in developing a community of like minded people willing to use JS8 call for community based emergency communications in grid down type situations.
Well presented video, now confident to use messaging feature.
Thank you very much. Ive been trying to figure this out and this video helped me do that.
Great video. Thanks for the upload.
Thanks for putting these out 👍
Very well explained! Love JS8call as it provides time during frame transmission to formulate or correct your messages (well quasi realtime), but unfortunately there are not too much Stations active at least here in EU de DG9RAB
Great stuff! In APRS we call it a "collision" when 2 stations transmit at the same time. Also like you said basically, due to constant changing HF conditions the Heard List may not be very useful / reliable. Very useful tool though!
Something i would like to add and i assume is the case. The list is most likely by time. Appears to be. So for the station you wish to get a MSG to find one who has heard that station close to the front / top of their Heard List. Plus keep time of day and band conditions in mind along.
Now the next thing i have in mind is stations that cover multiple bands at the same time. A GATE. What would be the best way to do that? Run a second instance of JS8CALL covering the other band? Also can we link the two so that MSG will go out to which ever instance hears the target station? Local Server maybe? Way over my head of course but seems like some Packet BBS had that feature. May have been built in the TNC. KAM Plus did i think.
Jason please stop giving me interesting rabbit holes to go spending lots of time down 🤦♂️😂👍👏👏
I did it last summer on 27.245 MHz. That's why JS8Call is much better than FT8! And funnier, too.
My Xiegu G 90 on most of the time as well. I'm waiting for the Digirig 1.9 to show up in the mail. My Mag Loop is facing south east. This will help me send and receive messages from Stations out of the mag loop path
This answered some questions for me. By the way, KB8HTU became SK 18 FEB 2021 :(
Dang! Hate to hear that about KB8HTU.
Hi Jason, just wondering if you ever did a video on the radio/audio settings. This 7100 is having my life at the moment over here trying to get it set up correctly 🤣🤣👍🏻
I haven't but there are some great guys over on the forum that run icoms. groups.io/g/KM4ACK-Pi/topics I am sure we can get you going if you'll post over there.
Hi Jason, thanks for the reply. I’ll post something over there in a few minutes, thanks a lot 👍🏻
Good stuff as usual Jason. This is day 03 of my JS8 adventure! Can you point me to a doc/video that shows how to build relay 'chain' that would go through 2 or more relay stations in order to deliver to my target station? You explained the QUERY command well; however, if I need a 2nd relay station how do I determine 2nd (or 3rd...) relay station to get to my target (I appreciate the relay function must be turned on). I guess the flip side is, how would I know who my target can hear (assuming we both can't hear a common station) so I can leave a message somewhere that can hear him? Hope that makes some sense, apologies for the lengthy question. I have searched high & low w/ no luck, you are my last hope Obi-Wan ;)
Grid down?? This is like the modern digital pony express! The message will still get through!
Impressive ! Thumbs up :)
Excellent video! I've been having freezing problems with JS8 on my Pi4, the waterfall will freeze and decodes stop, returns to working if I cycle RX/TX. Have you seen this any on your setup? 73 W5TPZ
I haven't seen it but this is the place to ask groups.io/g/js8call/topics
So how do you add that @POTA or any of the other @ callsigns?
Right click in the box on the right side of the screen and choose "Add new station or group" Enter the @group you want.
Why do you make many single syllable words into a distorted two syllable words?
