What? If anything Rolfe showed her the utmost respect throughout the film. He was very gentle and gave her space and never pushed her into anything. This was a lovely proposal, he wanted her so badly but always showed so much restraint around her.
Moral of the story: Choose the one who chooses you. The person may not be all you envision or fantasized. However, the love can eventually grow. It's better to have someone love you and treats you well and with tenderness, rather than loving someone who is unable to give you that love in return ❤💞❤
yeah, I've been saying that for years, and most couples work that way: he or she said "yes" because they were "chosen", it's a boost of self-confidence and flattery.
I just realized something: Christian Bale played Thomas (the young redhead character) from Disney's Pocahontas, so right now Thomas is proposing to Pocahontas!
Let's put our admiration of Christian Bale aside and think about just this character interaction. I think this scene is really well done and she shows her ambivalence towards the proposal really well. The pain of Smith leaving is still fresh in her mind, and Rolfe wants to take her to England and make her forget her whole life in America. Plus she is very young and feels immense pressure from an older man to say yes and be happy but she is made to feel bad for not having the "expected" response so she covers her tears by saying "I'm sorry," and "I suppose I must be happy." He realizes this and reassures her because it makes perfect sense for her to not say a resounding YES right away.
Cecily Erker - She is not yet over Smith. Also, she additionally remembers the pain of her own father exiling her. I think she is too young to really know what she wants. She is used to the man in her life making decisions for her. So she does what she thinks she is supposed to do.
Just finished watching. I wish he had been more understanding (or even bothered to ask) that she missed her people and her culture. His ignorance in that alone was astounding and is the chief reason he never really knew her (like her first husband did). He didn't seem to know or care enough to figure that out.
For those who are on Tean John Smith (For the movie not history) I ask this. What qualities did have that were right for Pocahontas? And didn't John Rolfe have that wasn't worthy of her love? I saw John R as the man who is compassionate, respectful, faithful, affectionate, nuturing, patient, a great listener and a devoted father. By the end of the film, Pocahontas realizes just what a wonderful man he is. And she returns all of those feelings to him 100% just as devoted him as he was to her.
AND TWICE NO, NO, THREE TIMES Probably even more. Jo rejects him in little women. Heartbreaking. RACHEL REJECTS HIM AND NOW THIS That's just so unrealistic
I love this. He is such a caring man. She had no life and no future. And he helped her and loved her. She was slowly brought back to life because of him. And he is right: she does love him in the end.
That's not really how it happened..she did have a future..just not in europe..she was a child they took advantage of out of lust and stole her away from her family and people (all to exploit her in europe)...she caught diseases and died young. Fail to see the romance in this...
@@SwearWerdDebris Same. And Christian Bale's character was such an idiot - he didn't seem to care that she missed her people/culture/home. It was like he thought giving her his attention was enough. Idiot. A very handsome one but an idiot all the same. And in terms of the real life story...yeah not remotely romantic. Wasn't she a child when they sought after her? Gross.

Okay before anyone says "who would say no?" and bitch out Pocahontas for denying Rolfe's proposal, Pocahontas felt married to John Smith, her first love. Imagine the first person you loved dying and then in walks a guy like John Rolfe, who pulls you out of your depressed shell, gives you a new life and then pops the question to you. In a nutshell, the reason why she turned down Rolfe, was that she loved him but not in the same way that she loved Smith.
Kilcher's performance in "The New World" is one of the greatest on-screen performances I've ever seen. Her characterization of Pocahontas is arguably the most desirable female character ever put on film. How could you watch her in the film and not fall in love with her?
And just think, it was only 18 years ago that everyone involved in this film thought it was a good idea to cast a 14-year-old girl instead of a young-looking adult.
My... I understand she hesitates, but...OMG, Christian is the most handsome and the better husband I think! I would agree without any hesitation! She's dead so young...lucky she took profit of her life before. Anyway, beautiful people die younger...
Those kind of things only happen on movies, of course. Every single woman in this world would say YES to a guy like Christian Bale, he is fuckin' perfect!
If you guys want to see her show her true feeling for him. Check out the kiss from this movie! It's one of the most beautiful and romantic scenes in Cinema. :)
Kids, he is the John that put the ring on her finger... not Smith. And dudes if you want to get that girl you need only say "You do not love me now, but you will."

@thisisviolent Have you seen this movie? If you have then you know of a very important scene where John Rolfe makes a very difficult decision. One in which he may loose her love but decides to do it anyway. It shows just what a selfless man he is since he was willing to put her happiness above himself. If you have not seen it then I reccomend 100%!

I think so too. He was even willing to let her make a choice with John Smith later and trusted her.

I noticed this, too. I guess he likes the legends surrounding Pocahontas.
In the sequel Bale actually VOICED John Rolfe as well

Actually Billy Zane was the voice of John Rolfe
