    Done for the day, heading home.
    The twilight between sundown and dark is my favorite time of day, when the machines have shut down and the quietness of the evening settles across the fields, peace and tranquility with man and nature...............nothing else like it.

    Greetings from France! Have subscribed a while back, but not really got into watching your videos until of late. First of all I would like to say I take "my hat" of to you Sir! Kudos for the continous filming of your daily challenges, chores, obstacles and joys! I thank you for providing videos allowing people like myself, understand the hardships you farmers endure on a daily basis, in order to provide us consumers with the products we take for granted are on the shelves in the stores. I enjoyed watching the series of videos on the repairing of the burnt tractor - what a job! In contrast watching you slide of the roof of your house with all the snow, was a great reminder never to forget to take time out for a good laugh! Once again, thank you and your family for the insights into farming! May you always have the wind in your back, and the sun upon your face! Respectively, John / France

    when i was a kid the neighbors had a self loading hay truck. i dont know if it was bought or home made but it was made off a large truck chassis powered by a Ford 460. it had a spiked conveyor on the front to pick up the bales and then the kids would stack them in the flatbed portion of the machine. it was an odd looking thing to be sure! it was basically a driving deck with an operator station and the evil looking spiked convener in the front. never seen anything like it....

    We used to push 80lbs to 100lbs brome hay through our old JD 14T square baler. Baled a lot of hay each year with it until we switched over to round bales. Only thing wrong with that old baler when we got rid of it was, the floor had rusted out. JD wanted more for a new floor than what the baler was worth. Only thing we square baled after our switch over was alfalfa and clover hay. Hated handling all those small bales though, a real pain in the arse for sure. Great video Wes. Cheers

    Those wheel rakes work great if there set up right, not too rough ground, and if it hasn't been raked by one of them old stile side rakes before because it roles the row too tight.

    We always stacked the last 3 loads of hay and left it on the wagons and covered it with tarp inside the wagon shed. Then when someone wanted a load it was ready to go..

      ianslow1234 I hadn't seen a conveyor chucker, but I had seen kickers back when I was a sprout-they had a plate, on the bottom of the output chute, that would kick the bale up, up, and away....
      I loaded quite a few wagons-by hand from the output of the baler (no kicker/conveyor chucker), stacked em' tall, and helped supply Grammy's sheep farm.....
      Long, Long, dirty, dusty, tiring days.... And they only baled 25-30 acres-of a 40 acre farm....
      They had a ole' 3 wheel single side Sun rake, a '70's ford 5/6000 series 2 wheel drive tractor, flat bed hay wagons, and some red little baler-with 2 claws to feed the hay from the tines to the packer/knife....

      Kevin Willis we used to do that over hear in Ireland or we stacked them into stacks of nine then load them onto a flat trailer with front bale grab , build a load of 160 to 180 per load then back to the hay barn to reek them in there.We also bailed 5000 plus per day with a welger ap 830 bailer finishing at 11pm

      sure have but we still use alot of small square bales over here as we use them to cover over a silage pit in an open ended shed , we bale both hay and straw for farm use

    • @KPearce57
      @KPearce57 9 лет назад +1

      +Kevin Willis If we were far from home Dad would have me in the kicker wagon stacking them, was up on one almost full side hill Dad dropped the wagon wheel into a wood chuck hole and over it went, I jumped and landed 30 to 40 feet from the hay. We put up 90,000 to 110,000 per year, then we switched to hayledge and put it in silos.

    in my experience, people who use small square bales are typically horse people, and they typically don't think about cost efficiency, they just want them small enough to move by hand because they don't have any other equipment to haul them. and horse people are crazy lol

    • @jameslandon4126
      @jameslandon4126 6 лет назад

      True. Lots of times it's the small dairy farms with like 40-50 cows and they have a couple sturdy sons that can do stacking for them. They just have what they have and can't justify buying new equipment when it's working for them the way it is.

    We never had a bale thrower but my old man would check the bales periodically and if they didn't weigh 80-100 lbs he'd crank that baler down. My brother and I would catch him not looking back and jump off the wagon and run up and loosen the baler back up..lol

    damn i remember picking up hay like that ,, it was about the only job i could get when i was in highschool ,, i enjoyed it ,, but we didn't collect them like you do
    i was a walker that tossed bales to a stacker on a hay wagon ,,usually i worked with a 5 man crew , tractor driver , 2 walkers and 2 stackers ,,,and on average i would throw 1 bale every 5-8 seconds sometimes 10secs ,, never paid much attention to tonnage but i do remember getting 150 bales to the acre 1st cutting,,and they averaged 55 pounds on the first cutting ,,and about 45 pounds on the second cutting ,and 120 bales to the acre ,,,i remember helping pick up 150,000 bales one summer ,, 1992 it was ,, it's no wonder i hate baling hay now

    I'm afraid many people cannot handle a 60lb bale -40 is enough for them! Most sacks / bags of material, that are designed to be manhandled, are max 45lb.

      What crop is this for please? Maize / Soya bean or something similar? What row width is being used - something pretty wide I imagine?
      In general the only crop seeds supplied in small bags/boxes in the UK are acre packs such as grass seeds or fodder / game crops, the only major crop supplied in small bags commercially is oil seed rape but the seed rate is very low / acre.

    can you adjust how far the bailer throws the bails?

    • @beaverrick9789
      @beaverrick9789 9 лет назад

      Garrett Edwards Yes, by revving the tractor up .

    • @tva429
      @tva429 9 лет назад

      BeaverRick New Holland Balers equipped with a thrower, at least the older ones, have a vari-drive to adjust the speed of the thrower, it is controlled by a crank that can be reached from the seat of the tractor, the newer ones have hydraulic speed control. When I run a baler with a thrower, I always set the thrower to gently toss first 10-15 bales in wagon, rather than bounce them off the back of the rack. Once you get a pile going in the bottem then you increase the speed of the thrower to fill the back up and then back it off as the wagon fills. Also, slowing the thrower down when turning helps avoid losing bales.

    People are weird about bale weight. Bought some a couple years ago and the guy said people weren't buying his because they were too heavy at 70 ish pounds. Same with feed sacks, bunch of pussies. When we were kids it was 80 pound bags. I remember wrestling with those suckers when I was 10 or 11. Grandpa said we were pussies because in his day they weighed more than that. Now it is little 40 pound sacks. Have to carry 2-3 to make a trip worthwhile.
