Each one of the members of LTE could easily go toe to toe with anyone else in their category (like, Petrucci vs all other guitarists, Portnoy vs all other drummers) and very possibly win. They’re all insane virtuosos
You won't regret Buckethead. I've seen him live in Austin. He's a phenomenal guitar player. The guy shreds in god mode!! One of the best guitarist ever!!!
@@Kel.N.RichReactions To make it in detail, John had to leave the studio after he received news that his wife is in unexpected labor. the baby soundscape on the 10 or 12 minutes significe that the band continue to jam without input of John Petrucci while he was away. John Petrucci’s wife gave birth while they were writing this song. The spot in the song with the baby sound byte was the exact moment in the writing of the song where John had to leave the studio to go to the hospital.
to me this song is a kind of instrumental brother of "a change of seasons" - reflecting all phases of human life, from birth to childhood, youth, maturity, birth of children, grandchildren, aging, death.. the studio version has even a short "afterlife" fragment))
Hi guys ! There has been several discussions about Liquid Tension Experiment 3 between john jordan and Mike in 2018. The 3 of them want to do it. I have good hopes there will be something in the future :-)
yeah recently read that I hope it happens that would be awesome. will have to be after this new tour and also Jordan has a new solo album out so....we shall see.. pray pray
Portnoy performed some LTE material with Jordan like a month ago on a prog cruise ship jam, and it also featured the bassist and guitarists of Haken. About 2 years ago he did the same cruise ship jam with this bassist Tony Levin, and with the keys and guitarists of Haken too.
Hey, check out their 3rd album. These guys are relentless. 'Brilliant' is an understatement! They are always in 'God mode'! I can't get enough of them....
This one is my all-time favorite of the two Liquid Tension Experiment albums. It's timed at about 16 minutes, but always feels like 3 or 4 minutes after listening through it continuously. Three quarters of the members are essentially Dream Theater (before Mike Portnoy's departure in 2010). Crazy good stuff! In case nobody mentioned it, they gave the name to the track because I think John Petrucci's wife gave birth when they were wrapping up the composition of this amazing song.
I remember learning this on bass in my late teens when this album was out. So much fun to play and still such a masterpiece! I was an advanced player for my age haha it was still a damn challenge and a half!
The bass players name is Toni Levin, he played with Peter Gabriel and King Crimson among others. The instrument isn't just a bass, it's a en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapman_Stick - basically a combination of two sets of string for bass and melody playing with the shown two hand tapping technique. LTE was "just" a fun side project conceived by Mike Portnoy when Joardan Rudess was still playing with Dixi Dregs. He was also considering other guitarists, but John Petrucci turned out to be the only one available at the time.
I’ve played drums for 36yrs, that is the funnest song to play❤️ and no, they don’t play anymore but Jordan did play a song with Portnoy on tour with one of his side projects.
I just suggested this song today then found you already did it. I was at this very show. The baby is part of the song. If they play any more it would be a special event most likely and not a tour. So if you find them playing anywhere, it's worth the travel to see them. This was a one time event in Downey, CA, and I know of one other show they did in New York. Now on the Acid Rain reaction you mentioned it was live in L.A. This is the same show, Downey is a sort of suberb of L.A. Oh, and the bass player is Tony Levin from King Crimson. And that fat bass he's playing is called the Chapman Stick.
After the horrific massacre in Christchurch, my heart has been in my stomach all day. Thank you for brightening my evening, even if it makes me feel a bit guilty smiling. I’m so glad you got to this one, as it was another of my suggestions, amongst many other people. I knew you would both love it - such joy!
They’re performing near Asbury Park in the very near future. Petrucci said, in a recent interview, they’ll be playing the full Scenes from a Memory album.
Liquid Tension was created before Jordan joined DT, once he did there was no need to keep doing LTE since it was basically DT now. But with Mike Portnoy our, they have discussed possibly doing a new album or some shows. Hopefully.
I was at the LTE show in Los Angeles (2008/09?). Amazing to see this in person in a small quiet venue (Downey?) with these LEGENDS / GURUs of musicianship. we were all blow away. face melted!
the "bass guitar" is a so called Chapman Stick, or just short "Stick", which has 8 to 12 strings depending on the model. it has 4 to 6 bass-strings and 4 to 6 melody strings It's played by Tony Levin here. He was bassist for Peter Gabriel and is bassist/stickman in King Crimson for quite some time now (1981 - 1998 and since 2003 to present). Trey Gunn plays also the chapman stick and also the Warr Guitar, another instrument just played by tapping. Trey Gunn also played at King Crimson (1994 to 2003, and 1994 to 1998 he played in King Crimson along with Tony Levin). John Myung from Dream Theater also plays the stick sometimes. But Tony Levin is the most prominent stick player.
It's not that they dont play anymore. It's that they get together once per decade to work on a project. Drummer also does this with Transatlantic. And his main band was dream theater, and then Neil Morse Band. etc :)

Try to listen to the 3-minutes warning impro from the first LTE record :-)
Lets all say it together: "WERE....NOT.....WORTHY!" DT on Sterioids. Agreed :) But DT is still the best but yes LTE was a game changer. No limits and didnt have to worry about keeping the record company execs happy just put out whatever they love to do on their own. and BOY did it ever COME OUT :) Also the title could be their own interpretation and their own "When the Levee Breaks" like Led Zep but yes the fun fact about the child birth of his wife is true and it makes sense. It ALL came out for this EPIC song/performance.
When The Water Breaks = song was written when John Petrucci's first child was born. The birth interrupted the sessions briefly, and for excellent reason.
@@fabioriato Yes it was. And to kel'n Rich, hence the name of the song, When the water breaks, Petrucci left the recoding sessions to the hospital when his wife announced that the baby is coming.
Tony Levin is on the Chapman Stick. Played in Peter Gabriels band and one of the all time greatest bassists.. Only FORMER DT member is the drummer Mike Portnoy. John Petrucci (guitar) and Jordan Rudess (keyboard) is STILL in the DT Band :)
I'd love to see more LTE, but I doubt that it will happen. Given how busy John and Jordan are with Dream Theater, Mike with Sons of Apollo and Translantic, and Tony... Well, T-Lev has King Crimson (I wonder if Robert will add a 5th drummer?) but they're pretty much done with their 50th Anniversary tour, but he's got Peter Gabriel's next tour, then his work with Stickmen, The Levin Brothers (great album,) numerous side projects, including hopefully, more work with Steve Gadd, and session work, he's booked up well into the next century. :-)

king crimson - elephant talk - live - saturday night live, with tony levin and his chapman stick on its best.
Really... This song is amazing! You must listen to the original studio version. There some details on the bass (stick) that Tony Levin didn't do on this live one. 😉👍. God bless you 👐✨
This was our first and only reaction. We can’t believe how good LTE is. We love being late to the party and being able to experience these things for the first time, just like in the old days where we couldn’t wait for an album to come out, run to the store by the record, CD or tape, RUN home and pop it in. We get to experience this every single day and night with a wonderful group of like-minded human beings coming together to share the music and the awesome this together. Thank you so much for being here. Later!
Steve Stevens of Billy Idol fame was the guitarist on the first LTE album I believe. You just can't go wrong with Tony Levin on bass either. Technical powerhouse.
Fun fact: Jordan Rudess was admitted into Juilliard at age 9 for Classical Music Piano. So yeah, he’s good.
(additional fun fact) He's the Band-Aid commercial kid from the 70's too....

He played with such a passion and fluency and ease but it was extremely difficult. love my guitar her John Petrucci killing it on the axe. DT/LTE is the best@!!@@ Long live ProgRock
Love your channel guys. Authentic reactions to music I really love are so cool to see. So how about a request? Please try out something by Caligula's Horse. Graves from their last album "In Contact" is a real masterpiece. #painintheask
Try to listen to the 3-minutes warning impro from the first LTE record :-)
Thanks for this one, think I just had an eargasm 😈
It was actually JP's third kid. ;)
@@fabioriato Yes it was. And to kel'n Rich, hence the name of the song, When the water breaks, Petrucci left the recoding sessions to the hospital when his wife announced that the baby is coming.
Former DT members with a different yet awesome bassist and no James Labrie.
Let’s hope they get back together.
😉👍. God bless you 👐✨
WOW.... Did you memorize it all. This must be their longest song ever..
Later!
These guys are killer players.
Dream Theater - InstraMedley (Live at Budokan).
Second this
#painintheask Liquid Tension Experiment - Universal Mind Live LA 2008
that piano solo is fantastic.
Gotta do Rhapsody in Blue by LTE. They did an amazing cover
Kel's built like a BRICK $#ITHOUSE
Indeed!
Steve Stevens of Billy Idol fame was the guitarist on the first LTE album I believe. You just can't go wrong with Tony Levin on bass either. Technical powerhouse.
You are thinking of Bozzio Levin Stevens.
@@toddowens1257 yes. I remember being pretty surprised seeing Stevens name with those other two guys.
@8:36, ''What the fuck is happening to me and why dont i wanna stop it?!!!''
Everyone mentions how complicated and how perfect they play. But what about their chops?! To be able to play like this for 3 hours, my God!
Yeah gotta say theres a lot of quality requests.
