As a design engineer it’s very impressive how well thought out this crate is. If the sculpture wasn’t absolutely incredible, I’d be happy with just watching how you approach making a crate for each piece.
Me too, ~15 years in museum, including a complete inventory of artworks and relocation of storage. I've seen them of all kinds, all sizes, all weights... This crate is very well designed, but it is not suitable for all types of transport (air freight, international...).
@@sadface In *his* case, I can't say. It's his own artwork, it's up to him. In the general case, depending on the artwork, materials, value/insurance policy, it may require more sophisticated features. Climatic crate, wood treatment (according to the standards of the destination country)... I have already seen crates arrive packed in another crate to overcome this kind of concern.
Dude, as a Damage Clerk for a major shipping company, I absolutely love all the time and effort you put into making sure the product is AMAZINGLY well protected, but that the packaging is completely clear how it's re-assembled, AND just how sturdy the packaging appears to be! I just had a (supposed) fine art piece in my building last week, an obsidian glass skateboard. Packed in soft packing foam, but the wood split where a screw was put in, so all the alignment went off, the lid came open, and... well, I think you can guess the condition of the skateboard.
I love that you put the instructions directly on the crate, I'm sure the museum workers apreatiate it :D And holy moly, that rabbit just blows me away! I really hope you make a deer one day, that would look amazing in this style :3
Not only is the rabbit sculpture an incredible piece of art but the crate is practically a piece of art in and of itself. I thoroughly enjoyed watching you figure out how to secure this rabbit for shipping. When I started watching, I almost lost my mind when I saw the rabbit (I’m a huge fan of rabbits.). Then you said it was going to be in an exhibit in Massachusetts, and I almost fell out of my chair. I live in NH, so I might actually be able to see it in person. Please do a video chronicling how you make these sculptures! I would absolutely love to see that. As always, your work is impeccable, Michael. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Your crate game is absolutely next-level. I would never have thought that this much thought, planning, and excellent execution was required for crate-making. Excellent job, as always! edit: I would 100% ABSOLUTELY want to see how you make these sculptures. They are incredible.
Not only do I discover a hidden talent of a creator that I love, but in addition the final product dazzles me with its ingenuity, its industrial beauty, its empathy towards the end users!
At the end. Actually Michael, you have *THREE* pieces at the museum on display. That crate is worthy of display! Holy hell, the rabbit looks awesome and so does the crate!
I love your process of building the crate. Having worked in a museum, peripherally, I always wondered how they managed to ship pieces in a collection without them getting damaged. Very cool! Yes, I would love to watch you sculpt, even if you are only showing the techniques without the added pressure of filming the entire process through completion. That way you could share some aspects, but still be free to create without the camera on every action. ;) I can't imagine how hard that would be...
This is the best application of custom woodworking I've seen so far. No one should care about yet another coffee table that can and should be mass produced. Custom job for safely keeping and transporting one of a kind fragile artwork is something any customer in such need would be immensely happy to pay for.
Really appreciate that you made this video. It is fascinating to hear your thought process and how thoughtful you are at each step. Shipping art is an art in itself - really compliments such a beautiful piece. Thanks again.
yup, there’s a reason why Art Handler is an entire job in itself within museums! Michael, if you see this - do you include a photo of how the initial completed installation is set up? as a reference if someone else needs to re-pack your items
That is the most beautiful sculpture. Wow. Also, somehow the care and thought that went into the crate is just as satisfying and impressive. You rock, Michael.
Michael, I am amazed at the planning & construction of this rabbit sculpture! Without words, you communicate that you are kind, considerate artist! The washers for the screws to help those who receive the sculpture, the non verbal hint of making the handles to reinforce how to orient the crate during shipping, the spray painted triangle to help the recipients reassemble the box, the way you label the contents of the crate, not to mention the well placed foam supports inside the crate for the rabbit sculpture… Wow 😮❤😊 Your channel inspires many makers like me. Thank you!
Wow, impressive! Love the end user focus you have in your crate, especially the part with written instructions on the actual pieces and the painted corner. Makes the UX designer in me very satisfied 😊
Absolutely incredible piece! I grew up in South Dakota and have seen a ton of jack rabbits in the wild and this piece made me smile. Also... dude... that crate is crazy cool. The cynic in me still thinks there is a possibility someone will put it together incorrectly at least once. Your videos help me appreciate the fact others exist who are all about details. Thanks for sharing and best of luck with the show!
I enjoy anything you produce. The rabbit is amazing. As with all your work, its a realization of your vision. Great job. Even the crate is a work of art and taught me so much, as I have items that need that much care and we move a lot.
that hare is stunning, I recently sent some of my art to Taiwan to a collector, and the process of building a crate took nearly a week to get right, the message from taiwan was that the crate survived shipping and its been put in storage so the art can be used in future moves. I think more love went into the crate than the actual art.
I love that rabbit. The piece shows a great understanding of the rabbit's physiology in motion along side the ungodly skill with your chosen medium this channel has already given me an appreciation for. I'd never have expected to enjoy a video of the crating up of an artwork, but you've shown me wrong on that score as well. Those aside I'll look forward to one day watching a vid of you creating another such sculpture.
Hello Michael , what a beautiful art piece that rabbit. The box you build is awesome, you don't have to be afraid there's going to be any damage during shipping. You are a real artist , love your projects and videos. Wish you al the best. Greetings from belgium 🇧🇪
Yes please!!! I would absolutely love to see how you make your sculptures! Hell, I enjoyed watching you make a crate for your sculpture, I’m sure I’ll enjoy watching you make an actual sculpture!😁👍
Amazing, Michael! The rabbit is a beautiful piece of art and the crate is so well made. Would love to see your building process of a sculpture and I would love to see you making a Galgo Español! These Spanish sighthounds suffer a hard fate. Used for hare hunting, abandoned or killed when the hunter has no longer usage of a dog. More than 50.000 every season. So watching you building a sculpture of a Galgo could help raising awareness of the plight of the Spanish hunting dogs.
I've worked in galleries and museums and that's about the best crate I've seen. I love the spray painted corner for registration; I've done similar things to keep non-interchangeable parts with their correct matches, too. I'd love to see a mountain lion done with this style; I think the curves and lines would lend themselves very well to the medium, as well as the wood tones being able to match that cat's natural coloring.
love this. your former work has given me a lot of good things to think about when it comes to the more art side of stuff and making them easily protected during shipping and storing/restoring. i would love to see you make some of this bent lamination mixed with carving and covering. i love the combo of all the techniques used and would love to see it layered ontop of each other. thanks for sharing!
I remember some animal pieces/wings on one of your early early vids. I’ve been hoping for more since then, it’s so astonishing. Everything you do from art to shop furniture is so well thought out and intentional. Fav Chanel for sure. I’d love to see a wolf sculpture.
From working in manufacturing I can without a doubt say your crates are beautiful and much appreciated. You wouldn't believe how often things come and go from warehouses looking trashy.
Amazing work as always Michael! your ingenuity and attention to details are remarkable, even that box making is awesome. Definitely interested to learn more about how you come up with such a piece. Any animal would do, but a pileated woodpecker would definitely be a treat. Thx!
Love the piece and really appreciate you. Walking us through the process of making the box. It’s one of those things I always kind of wondered about, but had never really thought deeply about. Just a fantastic walk-through. Thank you.
Definitely interested in seeing you make these sculptures. Something brief about the initial design, then any prototyping and then actual creation and finishing.
As a design engineer it’s very impressive how well thought out this crate is. If the sculpture wasn’t absolutely incredible, I’d be happy with just watching how you approach making a crate for each piece.
It feels like ot could fall from pretty high and still protect the sculpture
Came down to the comments to say this, 100% agree.
@@zchats came down to to the comments to say the same same thing!
That piece is incredible. The level of ingenuity and artistry of people never ceases to amaze me.
and the rabbit is nice too
Yeah it's an awesome crate
The fact that you can make a crate seem like a work of art deserving of the job it’s been given is incredible!
Having worked in a major art gallery for 20 years I can appreciate the work you put into this crate. Excellent work. 😎 👍

Work until people can read it. If it goes to a foreign country, the thought to make the crate operate easily is what will be important
Would love to see a long form video of how these are made! Super cool.
Yes to seeing the art process!
That was a legit masterclass. Incratable.
That is a beautiful piece of art! Yes!!! Would love to see how it was made. Thanking you in advance 😊
