  • I went to my friend's cottage in Northern(ish) Ontario this past August with some longtime friends. It's the 10th anniversary of us doing this, and I didn't want to show up empty handed, so I decided to make everyone a custom stainless steel bottle opener. It was a perfect example of biting off more than you can chew, but by some miracle I got them all finished on time.

I love it man, I would say maybe do your own periodic run of 10 or a bakers dozen and give one away and sell the rest for a few sheckles to help support your growth in machines and content, I love your content and its always a pleasure to see a notification from you. Granted Material cost is high but I also suggest trying to find a cheaper steel alternative or maybe even a tool steel, people who collect tend to be ok with a small amount of general maintenance. I'm a knife maker and 80% of my blades are a carbon or tool steel alloy and all my customers know they need to care for their Items. Anywho just a thought, appreciate the content as always

Thanks Eric! Yeah maybe like A2 steel or something .. I don't know how people would feel about doing maintenance on their bottle openers haha... well you never know... I'm sure even anodized aluminum would be fine. Thanks for the suggestion!

Great work! Thank You for sharing! What software did you use to design the part (AutoCAD? SolidWorks?)? What software did you use to toolpath the bottle opener? Can you post the DXF somewhere for us makers? Also - next version you might want to include a hole to put the opener on a key chain. Nice work!

      Hi Joe,
I used SolidWorks to design it and then the built in HSMExpress to do the CAM. It's very similiar to Fusion 360 + HSM. I'll see about posting the DXF to my Patreon (maybe as a freebie). I actually did a little redesign for a 3D Printed one people could buy from Shapeways and it has a little lanyard loop in it. It's fun to add little impossible-to-machine features when you know something is going to be 3D printed :P

I think they look cooler without the wood inlay. Also it’d be cool if they held a screwdriver bit. Something about not carrying around ‘uni-taskers’. That’s just my 2 cents. Good work though :)

Fair enough, I think I could go either way on the wood. It was certainly nicer to laser etch wood instead of engraving stainless for the customization :P. I intended these to just be left in the kitchen rather than carried around, but a second function did cross my mind. It's funny though, what else could one need to do when opening bottles? I couldn't really think of anything lol

I'd suggest, instead of using wood inlays, to just go straight through the material and then either fill it up with wood or try out some epoxy. should be less work with the epoxy (probably, but it could also end up the same or more, it depends as usual) and with two or three colors you could get some very nice and unique patterns.
yours look very nice though and I hope everyone liked them. they're unique and made specifically for that person.

Do small runs of them yourself every once in a while and sell them(like direstas ice picks). Help your Chanel grow.

I'll have to look into that... I knew he made himself an ice pick but I didnt know he has a system for making and selling them

he used to make them himself, now he has them outsourced, all he does now is add the twist, and stamp his logo in, then package and ship them

Couldn't you have laser cut 2 layers of wood at once since only one side is named and have less waste? Nice looking work.

Good idea! my only concern would be getting both layers to sit nice and flat
