At Kingshighway and MLK (which was Easton Avenue years ago) was Sears Roebucks. This area was an extremely nice area back in the 50's and 60's, and I spent many a day swimming at the Wohl Recreation Center on that corner. It was also nice to grab a sack of White Castles when we finished swimming, which at that time were 12 cents apiece. Thanks for the tour down memory lane.

Mostly all streets named Martin Luther King are kind of rough around the edges. I have only seen one that was decent and that was in Tampa, Fl. All the rest were strictly ghetto.

I live in STL, the REAL ghetto is Kinloch, Wabada, Houdamount tracks, Emily, Cote Brilliant, lol those are some the worst streets...theres plenty I'm leaving out

To all you people commenting as if people are in dire circumstances just because they deserve it, let me give you a little history. The 'Ville was an integrated community known as Elleardsville before it was annexed to the city, most of the people working for the horticulturalist, Charles Elleard. Due to restrictive covenants, it was one of the few places in the city where Black people were allowed to live. My family was among those who moved there from Mississippi to seek employment. But even when White workers went on strike, Blacks found it hard to find jobs. Even though they paid their taxes, they were denied basic public services. The hospital where I was born was built almost a decade after the bond issue was passed, replacing a facility with less than two hundred beds for a community of tens of thousands. When I was young, the city cut down trees rather than maintain them and the streetcar tracks were still exposed. Over the years, people who could afford to leave and had opportunities fled gradually. It is slowly becoming abandoned now with some entire blocks with only a few structures left.
Economic depression of a community is a lot more complicated than 'the people are bad,' White people have bad neighborhoods, too.
Among my neighborhood childhood friends are doctors, lawyers, politicians (from local level to federal), entertainers, educators, law enforcement officers and scientists. Don't judge a person's character by their circumstances.

    • @jeffking4176

      You are exactly right.
It IS far more complex than just...
I was born and raised in U.City. 1960-1982.
I had been in the city, had friends in Wellston,... never had any problems. (And I’m white). Even in the early ‘70’s - no real trouble.
There is, in America today, a group of politicians who seem to do their best to divide us, “ blacks” and “ whites “ . - the “ haves “ and “ have-nots”.
Because by dividing, they have better control. So many buy into it ( into the hate)
“ most whites are racist/most blacks destroy everything “
      Just NOT true.
IF we could ever come together, ....
      well, enough said 🙂

You're right. I know a lot of people from the East Side. ESL is supposed to be the worst, most dangerous ghetto in the country. Lots of good productive people come from East St. Louis. I'm sure I wouldn't want to be walking the street in the wrong neighborhood at the wrong time, but that could be the case anywhere. East Side kids go off to college, study, and behave. You can't even say that for all the white Catholic kids in St. Louis.

This narrator is a good example of what I call 'White Fright.' I've hung out at many bars and lounges on MLK Drive in St. Louis and in 30 years I've never seen a bar fight nor did I ever have any trouble out of anyone. At 6:10 there is a barbershop and NBC Lounge. I ignored that place for years until I was invited by a friend I met at Blue Swan which is at MLK & Marcus in the video. I really enjoyed NBC Lounge because everyone was so friendly and until the Great Pandemic of 2020, the lounge was my regular hangout. The Blue Swan is still open however it's simply ghetto. I used to hang out in there back in the 90s when they had strippers. Fun! Harlem Tap Room was the place to be in the 90s as well. A great place back then. They have also reopened during this pandemic. This is not the worst side of town. There are plenty of bad sides of town in St. Louis a hell of a lot worst than MLK Drive!

In 2000 I drove in my 1998 toyota Camry from California back to my home in Worcester Mass. I had California plates and a 32 inch tv in the passenger seat and all my belongings in the back seat. I decided to find and surprise my buddy steve that lived in St louis and had visited St louis in 1995 when him and I were in the navy. I love the city !! Anyways I got to St louis around 6 oclock right about the time the Cardinals were gonna take on the Mets in the NLCS. Anyways I found a payphone and actually got a hold of my old navy buddy steve and he gave me directions over the pay phone. Well I dont know what happened but I went right when I should have gone left and it didn't take too long for this out of town white boy with a tv in the front seat to be completely lost and completely shitting my pants !! Everything just got dark real quick and I felt so alone and small and just wanted to turn around as quickly as possible. As I was looking ahead I saw a rotary type thing that would either take me back where I was or if I went straight to a bridge. Well in 1995 when I first visited Steve in St Louis he told me no matter what if I ever get lost in St Louis dont ever cross a bridge. That advice came in big as I turned around went all the way back to the payphone got the right directions and as usual had a kick ass time in a great city !! But for about 15 minutes I wasn't sure if I was gonna get out of there alive :)

Southern end of the 'Ville; my grandparents lived where there is a closed moving company on the right side. My uncle ran a bar that was in that condemned building back when that street was the center of the world of St. Louis jazz outside of Gaslight Square.

I don't believe you walked that far to that market on any day, and why would you "unless you were an alcoholic and needed a drink? Ranken had a nice little store and cafeteria on the grounds. I service that store once per week with snack foods of all kinds, "it was a nice stop for me, and all a student would need is a snack. What did Martin have that made you walk over there? That school encourage their students not to leave the grounds. I have two nephews attending there right now and i was servicing this stop well over 15 years, and i live in the are. I never see these people out walking. so quit lying.

  • @Roobah

The problem about this NOT being a danger zone is twofold a) you are not far enough north as this is the boundary of the regeneration zone between the economically depressed north city and booming tech zone to the south, so you have to admit, it's improving as the tech zone moves northward, b) it's daytime. Stop at those LONG lights at night time and see how things are different. The number of properties for sale is decreasing steadily as investors scarf up cheap places to rehab in this area. Truly, the area could use less stop lights!

thug life is loved by many, so I say let's put the thugs in their own area and block it off, and see what happens. let them kill, beat Rob and mess with each other. maybe, just maybe, they will finally get it. but when everything is someone else's fault, I guess nothing will ever work. no pun intended.

Nah, you have to realize that the average IQ of the idiots that live in these areas is about 70 or so just about room temperature. The average US IQ is about 100 which is about 95 percent of all places like much better than these hellholes.

Ty, if the place is so lousy; why are you working over there? My city, is a beautiful city! As long as you have not abused another person or stolen, killed or raped a child; you WILL survive! This works in any city, in America! Deep Counties in Missouri hide their crimes! You are still doing in-breeding and car theft, out there! Not to mention the disposal of life by burning them up! We never find them! Take care of your own back yard! I wonder who you buried in it!! 👹👎👹
