4:28 there are 2 Abkhazian peoples nowadays. 1.Georgians from Abkhazia who have their own subculture as every other region in Georgia. 2. Apsuas/Adyghe people who are one of the Circassian tribes. People who want independence are this Apsuas. Nobody really knows how they got to live in Abkhazia cause they are northern caucasian people. Most popular theory for Georgian and western historians is that they imigrated from north in 14th to escape mongol wrath or to raid Georgian kingdoms(wich was what the other north caucasian people were doing at that time).

None of Georgian historians doubt that Abasgs that appear in 1st-2nd AD are proto-Apsua/abkhaz. That's the date of major ethnic shift in that region, documented by greeks Flavius Arrian and Claudius Ptolemy.
Hence, even they are originally from North Caucasus, they branched off from proto-Circassians(Adygh) in early time, and they culture is more Georgian than Northern, not the language though.

    • @bthn8401
      @bthn8401 4 года назад +16

    Very informative video.
There are some technical and factual mishaps though, but it is understandable that it's difficult to fit in everything in a 9 minute video.
One thing that is very important is that the population currently living in Abkhazia and South Ossetia are NOT natives of the land by any means. They were moved to the region by the Soviet Union, as Stalin's plan to Divide and Conquer. USSR did this in all 15 republics that were part of USSR. They would move populations around, to ensure that they would not rebel. They wanted to keep the ethnic hostilities always a possibility.
Today's populations of Abkhazia and South Ossetia are forcibly moved people. They removed the Georgians in those regions and housed these other tribes in their lands, thus creating a timebomb that exploded in the 90's. It ensures that Russia always has a foothold and a powerbase in the southern Caucasus. Same in Karabkh region, Same in Crimea and so on.

Thank you for the video. I as a Georgian will add few things. 1) "South Ossetia" is obsolete instead please use "Tskhinvali Region" and it is not autonomous republic anymore. Secondly Georgians became victims of ethnic genocide in Abkhazia and Tskhinvali Region by Abkazians and Ossetians with aid of Russia. And one more thing you said that sub-Georgian ethnicities Megrelians and Svans moved in Abkhazia after Russians expelled Muslim Abkhazians. Both Megrelians and Svans lived in modern day Abkhazia since ancient times. Gaius Plinius Secundus (Ist century) CE and Arrian of Nicomedia (Ist century CE) and Memnon of Heracela mention tribe of Sanigs who lived in and around Sebastopolis (modern Sukhumi) this are proto-Svans. We have family names such as Sanikidze, Sanikiani, Sanigiani and Sanaia all related to Sanigs. Also Aghathias Scolasticus (VI century CE) describes tribe of Misimians who were also proto-Svan tribe living in Kodori gorge.

For Adjara, it was actually first republic of Georgia who granted autonomous republic status as long as there still lived Muslim Georgians and socialists thought they should have had autonomy. Apart from that, there was really tough situation with Turkey but in the last moment, Muslim elite of Adjara, who were ethnic Georgians, preferred ethnicity and nationality over religion and opted to stay within republic of Georgia rather than being part of Turkey. Therefore, it was kinda like returning the favour from the central government to grant them autonomous status. Later, Soviet Georgia just inherited the legacy. Kinda same for Abkhazia, Abkhazians in 1918 preferred to stay within Georgian borders and somehow to get rid of Russian civil war. When Georgian general Mazniashvili entered the region to defend the borders and take administration responsibilities Abkhaz nobility granted him small cavalry regiment to support the cause. So again, autonomous status was reward for loyality towards Georgian central government. It was Bolsheviks who opposed Georgian rule there. For South Ossetia yes, it was completely made up by Bolsheviks as a reward for Ossetians helping red army annexing Georgia. Although Abkhazia has been separated duchy from Georgian kingdoms in later years, it was still part of Georgian political sphere, divided Georgia was just a common thing throughout 15th-18th centuries. Adjara was part of guria but not all of today's Adjara. Mountainous part was itself part of Samthkhe that was fully annexed. Guria owned just lowland Adjara. Ottomans didn't fully annex Giria itself, it still was nominal vassal of kingdom of Imereti, they just detached current Adjarian territory. Historically, Abkhazian territory also increased in size towards core Georgia. Up to Sokhumi, the capital of Abkhazia, it was considered duchy of Odishi ( modern day Mingrelia). Later Abkhaz dukes conquered territory from Odishi dukes, you can see this on many European maps of 16-18 centuries if you don't believe in Georgian sources.

This comment might be not seen but that is important to mention that the Abhazians are not sub ethnic group of Geaorgians. Some georgians say that There is two type of Abhazians one is Georgian Abhazians which was never mentioned in any historical documents as georgian ethnic group. Second one are Apsua invaders from north those are living right now in Republic of Abhazia.
But the right thing is that Abhazians/Apsua people are aboriginal people of that region. They belong to Adigo-Abhazian language group. I am my self Circassian(Adiga). And many Circassians fought for freedom of Abhazia, but Russia came and annexed Abhazia. Abhazia must be independent from both Russia and Georgia.

During the exile of Abkhazians to Ottoman lands by Tsarist Russia in the 1800s, some Abkhazians settled in this region, which was Ottoman territory at that time. Currently, Turkish Georgians and Armenians predominate in the population. According to the text of the 1921 Kars Treaty, after the Ottoman Empire, Turkey granted this small region a wide administrative autonomy that guaranteed all the rights of the people and left it to Georgia on the condition that it could trade freely, tax-free, through the port of Batumi

Thanks for video. I want to say something about abkhazians origin. Twice is true, i mean today in abkhazia call themselves abkhazians people from north and kartvelian people. For example president of abkhazia aslan bzhania is ethnic Georgian. His surname bzhania is Georgian. Bzha in Georgian language means sun. Also defence minister of abkhazia is ethnic Georgia kishmaria. Also half of abkhazians are Georgians. Other part are adyga circassian people from north caucasus. Their language is afshila adyga circasian language. Abkhazia comes from Georgian region afkhazeti. It always rulled by Georgians, for example anchabadze, bagrationy, shavliani, shervashidze and so. There always lived Georgian speaking people there are hundreds Georgian architecture with Georgian alphabets. In 1990 in abkhazia lived 500 000 people. From them 350 000 were ethnic Georgians. In 1991-93 years 300 000 Georgians were displaced and 30 000 were killed. They did ethnic cleasing. Afkhazeti is Georgia tskhinvali is Georgia. 🇬🇪🇬🇪☝️

Laz is also one of them and the unfortunate thing is that the Kartvelian language speakers like Svan and Mingrelian people identify themselves as Georgians, but Laz people don't, well at least don't anymore. Laz people are in Georgia, but only in the thousands, while there are million Turkey. I want Laz people to be free.

modern day abkhazians (Which should be called abazgs and apshiles, ) and ossetians both are north caucasian people this is just simple fact. No one denies this fact not even they... So how the land in south Caucasus belong to "only" north caucasians?
The reality is that they don't have enough balls to fight russia for their independence in north caucasus, rather they choose to betray Georgians and take Russian side in the conflicts... So pathetic...

One misconception here is that Abkhazian means Georgian same as Kakhetian means georgian it's just subregional division of Ethnic Georgians or Kartvelians how we call it. However, separatist group who knowdays lives in Abkhazia and is called Abkhazians are not really Abkhazians and in fact, they call themselves Apsuas not Abkhazians, Abkhazian kingdom was created by ethnically kartvelian or simply georgian people, not by Apsuas who imigrated in the region in around 16th century from northen caucasus due to help of Ottomans to destabilize the region, they were both Muslims so basically had help from Muslim Ottomans to immigrate into the region, have a supportive population there and destabilize the region. So, to colcude those so called Apsuas are not indigenous population of Abkhazian region, Abkhazia is a Georgian name, it's Georgians(Kartvelans) who call them Abkhazians while that separatist groups calls themselves Apsuas, so if they really were indigenous population of the region, why they would name it Abkhazia rather than Apsua, it's completely nonsense

      There are several historian sources:

I think it's fair to point out that Adjara (Batum region as Ottomans and Russians were referring it to it) was among other regions Ottomans were willing to retake. Klarjeti and Samtskhe. To not dwell into unnecessary information, Adjara, Samtkshe and Klarjeti were first part of Russian Empire, then transferred into Transcaucasian Federation. The state was weak and was opportunity for Ottomans to seize those parts. At the end they managed to occupy three of them and were even present near to capital of Georgia. At the end, Federation was dissolved, British occupied Adjara and Ottomans left.
At the end of the Republic's days, now Turkey, along with Bolshevik Russia invaded in 1921 and successfully defeating Georgia. As of Kars Treaty, both Russia and Turkey agreed that Russia will take entirety of Georgia (including Batumi and Samtskhe) but Turkey will take Klarjeti which is today's Artvin and Ardahan Regions. As a compromise for not taking Batumi, Russia created Autonomous Republic of Adjara withing Georgia.

There is no such thing as South Ossetia! It’s Inner Kartalinia region in central Georgia where Ossetian refugees (search for “ხიზანი”) have settled in late medieval centuries in various Georgian principalities, such as Samachablo, Dukedom of Qsani (Ksnis saeristao), portion of Dukedom of Racha, etc. The term “South Ossetia” was used first by Tsarist Russians describing Ossetian villages in the illegally annexed eastern Georgian Kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti. Later after the Bolshevik invasion Georgian Communists have created fake and completely artificial Ossetia in the middle of Georgia and made Georgian town Tskhinvali (founded by a Georgian king many centuries ago) a capital city while only around 10% of Ossetians lived there. Now, centuries later so many Russians are fleeing from Western sanctions against Putin (including many of his supporters), that in the future they may try to takeover entire Georgia.
