Great piece of history... I've a 70HP mercury that does 30mph that's fast enoough for me! It's worth focussing on the crazy background music that is there to generate excitement for the audience... Those were the days!
I have an old 1962 Mercury 850 85hp 6 cylinder power head from a merc. Same block idea basically. I’ll never use it I should post it somewhere it runs!
I don't see any other country taking giant leaps, either... and actually, Kiekhaefer always made it a point to keep Mercury way ahead of "The Enemy" (OMC), who at the time had only a fat-assed, 40-hp V-4.
That was the first thing that jumped out at me - reduction of aerodynamic drag is an obvious solution for anyone who has ever ridden a motorcycle or stuck their hand into the windstream outside an automobile window. The slick profile of the Mercury motor helped but beyond that, the pilot's instinctive crouch was the only concession to streamlining. A lightweight, inexpensive fairing would probably have considerably improved top end. Maybe the sanctioning body required an open cockpit to qualify for the competition ?
The stock 75a was 60 HP at 5k rpm.A jacked up 75H(hydroplane) ran on methanol and could turn up to 10K.The final evolution of the inline 6 was the T2X,and a good factory qualifying motor could exceed 200 HP.
i think he wasnt comparing this Busa to a factory jet ski... I think he was saying that jet skies go fast enuff. They have turbo in them now that will blow you away.... Busa is a ton heavier needs to be in a "slowsuzki" instead where it belongs. ( he he heee) i know cause i have one. '01 Busa
True, however I tried to put the emphasis on America as this is where the power of the world is sitting! "Other" country's don't get the money or time to present anything that can compete or be ahead as "the power" in this world won't let them.....it's a huge argument that I'm not going to get into over a boat but there's why I wrote that comment. BTW By saying America I don't mean all American people as by the "power" of this world I certainly don't mean America sorry if that's confusing......
WAIT,! Was that a Canadian built DHC2 Beaver on floats being used as a chase plane? Amazing!
Blast from the past ! Carl was the man . mercury had such an advantage they stopped letting the older engines run to level the playing field .
Mercury's tower of power.. impressive indeed.
Wow, thanks for the unreal video. This is the favorite of all my favorites! I cannot believe that the term " quicksilver " goes back that far!!!

Great old footage!
Mercury's were so beautiful back then, work of engineering and art now all outboards look the same
theeasybeats . No they don't, and they don't last , or run the same.
Neat video. Thanks for posting it.
I had one of these Kiekhaffer MK 75 HP outboards. I never had a chance to run it and like a fool I traded it away.

I have a 50hp 4 cylinder. I love it. Always thought Mercs were faster
Wish we could've heard the outboard
All from 60HP. Impressive. If they got the pilot out of the wind could have gone even faster.

Probably another easy 5 mph with the driver laying down or reclined back. And with a canopy, who knows???
And now they wouldn't believe
you mean that 2 stroke Merrcury whooped that 4 strokes ass
Dave Turner .any 2 stroke will beat a 4 stroke of equal hp.
they used to test Mercury's in the bay near where I grew up
theeasybeats okay?
Is this the granddad of the mercury tower of power?
Would kill for the tower and foot on that 75H...
jet ski slow !!
yup :)
could you imagine jet skies now-a-days can do the same thing even faster . Who would of thought?

Thats decent!
love it repowered my boat have video also :)
DId anybody see the aligator???
S Cherry .are talking about the one licking his chops ?
the two stroke Evinrude whopped that 4 stroke's ass!!!!!
Yes, you merc fans. Hang on to the past.
S Cherry . any boat engine that run's is a good one , long as it doesn't leave you stranded.
And then came omc.

d240786 . because they steal American knowhow.
Oh cheer up would you rather have this play to rap music?
as long its 2>4 I'm o.k
that's not a evinrude you dodo, how dare you insult mercury like that
we've come so far....NOT!!!
why does america insist on taking the smallest steps possible?
To bad the record was set in Seattle
Lots of great boat races in Seattle back then.
Quite interesting but what bloody awful music.
Very typical for the era.
