Anes (first syllabus from Anesti which means to rise or to ressurect). In this case its used to give a tone for the Byzantine Chant as without instruments its easy to make a mistake and start on a different scale. Sometimes instead of Anes at the beginning of a chant you may hear Agie (which means holy).

deppo_zweifler The church they are singing in is catholic, but the Prokeimenon hymn is orthodox. And not all Eastern Orthodox Autocephalous Churches use the Julian calendar... Some of them do, some of them don’t.

@@taiaalyna Only one does not use the Julian calendar, and that is the Church of Finland, bc it is required by law to use the Gregorian calendar. The Orthodox Churches you are referring to who use the "New Calendar" do not use the Gregorian calendar either. The NC is a revision of the Julian calendar that was revised when it was apparent that the old julian calendar was astronomically incorrect. For this reason, Christmas is celebrated still on December 25 according to the old calendar, but on the New Julian and the Gregorian this date corresponds to January 7th. The OC is 13 days behind the other two calendars.
