Finishing Twin I Beam Suspension on Our 1000cc Mini Trophy Truck | 12" of travel!

- Опубликовано: 5 сен 2024
- We finish building the twin traction beam (or twin I beam) front suspension for our 1000cc mini trophy truck build. We used long travel shocks we found online for $50 each, they were originally meant to be used as helper springs. The coil over shocks themselves have 10 inches of travel, but we have about 12 inches of travel considering how we set up the suspension. This custom build homemade front suspension looks great, now all we need is steering and we should find out if it works well!
Thanks for Watching!

It's very promising! Once we finish up the steering, we won't be far from riding this thing!
thank you :)
you need to seriously do what is called crossbuck or X the lower center of drivers compartment on sides.
Did ya'll talk about how you'll put sterring on this mini trophy kart
Where’s the c10 video!!!
Looks sick y’all I think you should make the top/roof look like the can-am maverick x3 roof
I getting the same feeling as the crosscart and the drag cart build woohoo I'm excited!!!
I cant believe how many years I've been watching your guys channel and it keeps getting better
Yes I recently came back after about 2 years
My husband has a suggestion for the slow response of the the shocks. When you first got the shocks, you should have removed the springs from the shocks, fully extended the shocks, and measured them fully extended and fully compressed. Then measure the length of the springs, uncompressed. By doing a mathematical calculation, knowing the compression rate of the spring, you will know what the travel rate of your suspension is. Different ways of increasing or decreasing suspension travel length can be obtained by using longer, shorter or progressive rate springs. The spring directly affects the action of the shock. Love your videos and totally dig the stuff you guys build.
Yes, love your design, and make a snow kart, with snowmobile tracks instead of tires, like if you want to see that
@Barry Mcockiner I am a snowmobiler, it isn't as hard as you think
Snow is maybe if your lucky a 1 time a year thing in north Carolina
@@IllegallyAcquiredKIA not in Canada
@Barry Mcockiner yes, but, it could still work
@Barry Mcockiner that is what I meant
Thanks for the honest content guys. Best way to learn new things is to bite the bullet and go for it. You will make mistakes. You will spend unnecessary money, but there is a lesson to be extracted from each little mistake made in the shop. I can relate to what you guys go through as your skill sets increase with time and experience. About ten years ago, I decided to build a tube chassis rock bouncer from scratch. I had a little bit of fabrication experience, but nothing could have prepared me for doing it besides just getting out in the shop and disregard the idea of failure. Several builds later and it’s hard to quantify all of the odd little pieces of useful knowledge I’ve obtained little by little, system by system, processes, geometry and engineering, and even learning what tools can be of lower quality versus what tools need be of a certain quality (doesn’t everyone try to skimp on buying a tubing bender at first!?). Sorry to wax poetic. I really enjoy the channel guys. Thank you both.
2:21 The look on his face after being asked "why did we do that?" was hilarious.
That made the whole episode worth it!
“Ain’t nothing a grinder can’t fix” - Jon😂😂
Micah K. When your dong is to big
As the saying goes.. a grinder and paint, makes you the welder you ain’t
Shuffles and a lot of beer
Sounds like a Bible verse
@@Sffker My dad says he is a good welder (I think he is) but he still grinds welds.
Wish you guys would stop being so hard on yourself, this is a huge task and you're smashing it, mad props!
I just blame my design team when I have to "rework" things. Note: I am a one man operation :) .
You are doing Great job. (my design team agrees)
Agreed lol🍻
untill it gos over a jump and lawn darts .... motor in front all wieght makes it nose dive .
@@craigengelman4534 they're bodies, seat, fuel tank, batteries, extra tire should keep it right, suspension tuning can help to.
put a" T\_/T " bend in the door bar it will look cool
Agreed
Yes and we can name it the TT bend
Like when you take the doors off a Jeep. That’d also help with getting in and out once they lower the roof.
@Skott hey what's up skott
Not good for structural rigidity.
It blows me away after 3 years of watching you guys to se you come all this way. There was 3 separate times I thought the video had to be over but it kept going. You guys have come a *long* way. Thanks for all you do.
I hafta laugh... when John was walking around on top... ooops! There goes one tool to the floor, then another... and another... pause for effect... HA HA HA HA!!!!!!
well, i'm glad you guys finally listened about the shock angle... when you mock up suspension, remove the springs from the coilovers. that way you can position them to use the full stroke of the shock. obviously this thing is never going to use all of that shock shaft available for full bump......well, it'll use as much as the frame allows before smacking the ground & augering itself. keep up the lernin!
I clicked about as fast as i could you guys are the best RUclips channel ever - bodie
You know what, you guys aren't professional race chassis builders, and I don't think anyone is expecting you to be. You are just building stuff, letting your imaginations run with it, having failures, learning and doing it again. I think there are a whole lot of people in this world, me included, that wish we were fortunate enough to be able to create and earn a living doing it. Keep it up guys.
this project is looking great!
Thank you!
15:51 HA! GOT EEM
You guys should load up the toys and head down to the freedom factory. I can see Cleetus' face now, YEEEEEYEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! Racing the Xcart against the Trophy cart at the freedom factory would be epic!
gotta make sure they can smoke the tires before going there
They need to make a burnout kart!
Firstly, his name is Garrett, secondly, he's an idiot, thirdly, I don't think a guy with multiple thousand horsepower cars and all the toys is going to be as thrilled with this bath tub as you are.
Nathaniel Mathies why don’t you tell us how you really feel?
@@1one3_Racing wow you cry just like the guy stole your boifwiend!!! THAT'S IT HUH?? He stole your boi toy and now you're gonna hate on him huh??? Well you know what they say...... if you're not man enough to KEEP him, then you're not man enough to HAVE him!!! And the way you're hating on him you don't sound like you COULD keep him so..........ROFL.......
"we need more drill bits" plug pampers immediately. Love it! Can't wait to see this thing head to head with the cross cart.
Cant wait to see this project finished
For the steering look up double swing set style. It helps eliminate bumpsteer since the draglinks follow the same arc as the swing arms.
4:23 actually it’s the third you built the 670cc dragster
yeah but that one broke when they used it on the drag strip
Fourth one, if you count the cozy coupe, but that's pretty small.
this has real suspension
@@xone_mi no it broke when someone hit it at that meet up
@@osquad1346 yea but they fixed that but blew the motor at their last drag race. the frame is still fine.
Loving the longer videos guys. You guys are killing it. Keep up the great work!!
Never clicked faster in my life! Love the vids guys keep it up
I don't usually comment but, I think that the both of you are doing a great job with this mini trophy truck! As of this episode I am so very impressed that you guy's are going to do what you want and not compromise to please the viewers to get a better rating. I really enjoy watching this channel cuz ya'll are gonna do what you want to do in any build it seems no matter what. I hope that you guy's never do anything that ya'll do not want just to please the every day Joe shmoe that think they know everything and do not have anything else to do but to criticize other peoples hard work.MORE POWER TO U GUYS! PEACE! ROCK ON HOMEBOYS!!!!!
I feel like if you took 4-6" out of the roof height and got a decently low seat, the roof line would look amazing.
I agree ! It would look so much meaner with that roof lowered! I hope they do that !
yes i agree as well!..
The front suspension top mounts look perfect for adjustable plates and would give you some flexibility. Nice work, love the build so far.
18:45 I love when John acts like he knows what he's talking about 😂
I can actually see this thing coming together even better than I expected
That is going to be awesome love you're vids you inspired me to start restoring go karts and mini bikes
Great build guy's, don't diss yourselves on the frame building, I've built over 200 custom bikes and trikes over here in the UK in the last 30 years and I still use bits of string with a nut on.
My only comment would b to weld crush tubes in your bottom arms where the shocks mount are, about the only weak part I can see.
Looking forward to the next video.
Stay safe.
Flump.😄😄😄👍
Ah yes it’s all coming together
Hey guys!! Looks great! I think with the look of it coming together it might be the off road sprint car. That sucker needs a wing!! I love it!!
Now I want to see Ike & John with their brothers on video at the same time
Love this build
Ike forgot they had a RUclips channel there for a second
It is awesome to see how much you guys have grown.
Hell yeah brother raise hell praise Dale 🙌
This thing will be soooo comfortable !!!! Put the quad wheels on it, the offset will change the way the suspension react (makes the suspension arms longer)
“...so for testing purposes, we’re going to use... deez nuts” 🤣🤣😂😂
😂🤣
Looks awesome. Good to see you both smiling.
Hey guys 🤙🏼 notification squad
Marvelous project chaps, and I do think this is the perfect length for one of these videos, rather than the normal 10-15 minutes.
my names joel!!!
I gotta admit at first I was scratching my head in the looks department, but now I'm really liking what I'm seeing. And mad props for taking on one of the most difficult suspension setups and running with it. The head scratching will be worth it in the end
Second comment this thing is going to be killer
Hey guys I am an amateur fabricator too and i love the channel !! man ! i encounter the same issues as you guys so I can relate to you a lot. the build is coming along nicely and it seems that all obstacles are being tackled.. however, the roofline is the one that needs help the most. instead of doing a hoop from driver to passenger, do a hoop from the front of the driver to the back of the driver that way you can give the car a more traditional car roofline. it will look much better and will tight the entire trophy truck look! you can even trow a radius bend on it ! that way wil will be curved
I love your basic approach to building this thing it inspires us all to give it a go. My first go kart was built from box tubing and we thrashed that thing for years. Keep doing what your doing it inspires many.
It’s coming together guys! I was skeptical at first but I like the way it looks.
It looks like its going to be alot of fun to drive once it gets moving.
I usually try to avoid being that guy that talks about someone else’s channel in comments. Red Beard’s Garage just did pretty much exactly what you are talking about customizing a sealed shock and making it adjustable and also able to change the oil weight. It was done in the last 2 months. I think it would help enormously, and its very cheap.
Even though this build ain't my jam, I admire your ingenuity and ambition. Ike was always a good wrench, and Jon is getting better all the time.
Looks sick!!! Good job guys
You guys got the perfect goofy and awesomeness keep it up
New camera guy freaking rocks! I'm thinking from the editing work, he did that too. Amazing job Joel. Oh and thanks to you guys as well for getting back to the nuts and bolts.
That thing looks like fun in a barrel , Keep rollin guys ,love the stuff you create and all the fun you have with it!
Love watching you guys. Counting down till next video. Best build channel on here.
Johns face at 15:18 is priceless
It's coming along Boy's, going to be awesome.👍
I'd add bump stops on both rear and front with little it straps. I've learned alot over the time building Prerunners. And heim joints are a life saver
Love the longer videos keep it up guys!
Cars and Cameras giving Shade Tree Mechanics a good name world wide.
more mini hondas! its a real craze in belgium
Great job! Im sure the front suspension will loosen up after the first ride
Hell yeah man. I can't wait to see this bad boy running
Looks good as always boys.keep up the good work.
It looks like a Norwegian Jeep buggy. I love it.
15:36 "these nuts" HAH GOT HIMMM
You two are great , thank you for what you do .
I’ve been watching y’all for years. You guys never cease to amaze me. I put a 420cc engine in my golf cart. It has an unbelievable amount of torque. Good work!
Great job guys. Can I make a small suggestion on the top shock mounts. If you weld a piece of 5/16" flat bar on each side and drill multiple holes across the top you'll have an adjustable setup that will make it easier to later to get the ride and handling qualities that you're looking for. Awesome rode.
great video the roll bars dont look stupid they look like a great place for some lights keep up the good work
You guys should be proud of yourselves if I’m honest, like you’ve said you aren’t professional fabricators so what you’re coming up with on your builds is pretty damned amazing.
I can’t wait to see the end result but I seriously hope that you decide to run some boost through that engine as that’s something that will really take your builds to the next level.
Keep on hammering away at it and I’ll be back to see more soon hopefully. 👊🏼
You guys should do a "beginner's tips for fabrication" video just like your old 9 Reasons Why to Buy an Old Go Kart video. That video is responsible for getting me into karts, small engines, and off-roading. But now I'm looking to do a ground-up build of my own, and I'd like some entry-level advice!
looks frikking great
IDEA: what if you moved the I-beam mounts in much closer together, like 5 or 6 inches inward and went ahead and used that to give yourself a ton of ground clearance by mounting the shocks 8 / 10 inches above and offset 2 inches to the outside of the I-beam mounts.. the read end could be lifted hella taller too. I’m a huge fan ✌🏻👌🏻 This is my second edit- maybe look at the whole front end this way-: the whole front suspension needs to be moved down on the rest of the frame.
It's really shaping up to look like a legend car, but a truck. Really like it
The look on Issac's face "Yeah how about we just build it like i suggested!!" lol man it might just be me but dang he has some good ideas that Jon is just crappin on!!
Loving the longer videos. So entertaining. Keep them coming!!
Really enjoying watching this build.
For as badass as the other one is.... I can't wait to see this one finished.
Can't wait to see it rip. Y'all inspire me to build go karts again. Had a lot of fun building and running old karts.
This is a great build, very excited to see you guys continue it!!
For front end make a skid plate like a brush bar package also you could mount front lights & also strengthen the frame !!!
LOVE THAT FRO!
I dare Carsandcameras to use a Yamaha 1200cc V Max engine on their future pro kart builds! 😁
Looking good guys can't wait to see it done and I love the longer videos like this one
It's lookin sick! I like how the original box frame is slowly morphing into something that's gonna be really cool. Great job guys
When u start the steering, use a 80s/ early 90s s-10 gear box(needs to be the models with the 4 cylinder motor), it's a old dirt track racing trick, it's has a quick ratio so you dont need power steering and a pittman arm u can attach to for a custom made drag link to your i-beam suspension. Hope it helps.
Sorry, after reading it again it sounds like I'm saying it doesn't have a pittman arm, it does have a pittman arm, so it has a good mounting point for drag link.
Looking sweet!
You guys are rad. Thanks for doing what you do and sharing it with us!
Great video guys! The best beginner DIY available. As always, it'll be fine.
First trophy truck episode: Why are they making a bathtub?
This episode: Aw heck yeah!
It seems like you guys have run into a lot more hiccups and frustration with this build than any of your past big projects. I'm really glad you're persevering, and now it's really starting to look like something awesome!
This thing is going to be SUPER squirrely. The spindles are going to go crazy from positive, to negative camber as the suspension travels. Good luck keeping this thing straight!
When you add your flat bar for the top shock mounts. Perforate it so you have multiple mounting holes so you can adjust the suspension
be awesome once its done!!! think it might out do the crosskart!!!!
the build is coming along amazing the only thing I can say is you should plate the front and bottom half of the cab to keep timber and sticks from being kicked up in to the cab. knock on wood you never need it but you know the first time you take it out without plating a stick will come in and go thru a leg or worse god for bid but it happens
Great video and progress! Its gonna be awesome.
hay not bad man! good job. tip...... u have to use two brackets on the suspension hook up points. not like the upper rear shock mounts. weld a L tab under the front lower shock mounts to bolt onto the outside of the lower shock bushings on the front control arms. also make sure you can get some caster with them hiem joints. i would drive test them shocks before you commit to not using them. they might be just fine! yes get ride of them street wheels please. ugly. keep up the good work guys!
I'm loving the quarantine hair-do.
