I use mine many times in the Canadian winter and have stayed warm. Mine is good to about -30c then more clothing and such is needed to stay warm. Everyone sleeps at different temps. Thanks for the watch.
+Paleoman52 Thanks, i enjoyed the camp out and to hear how it was meant to be used and so on was very cool. I have used one for a while as well, even have vids of my campout before. Loved to hear how he did it and such tho, well done on his explaination. Take care buddy.
I brought mine 17 years ago they were not coming with goretex bivy, this sleeping bag is amazing, I never got cold with it. It is rated for very extreme cold. Nice video. I need to get one of those goretex bivy.
+ben terwellen haha that hood looks silly as heck, in my opinion. lol Looks like a cone head and feel like a minion when you wear it, looking out of this little hole lol. THO warm and in the bush i care less what i look like, function is the key. I just got a second bag to add to my set up, so i will be testing and using this system in the snow as well and very cold temps.
I've had a lot of people telling me to get and try that MSS, but I hear for a heavy guy like myself, they can be a really tight fit. If I am not able to roll over.. I'm not going to be able to sleep. Thanks for the video
Very nicely demo'd Peter! Thanks for showing this one Wayne. I find it fascinating to check out the military gear. Our military that is! :) Looking forward to part 2. Nice work with the M Be well brother Craig
I'm looking at that SCHF52 as a one-tool option. Still waiting for a Canadian retailer to carry them. Soon! I have the USMC sleep system. Couldn't find the Cdn. version for sale at that time. Military grade bivys are great pieces of kit. It's something to sit/lay on while taking hydration breaks, and a camo blind for hunting/evasion, and for a waterproof shelter. Happy trails.
+John Campbell The 52 can be ordered soon from amazon .ca most likely, i think that will be your best bet. I like the military bivy and sleep system, i onl;y had the outer bag, til a couple days ago and i got a second bag. I dont have the liner, but i have a nice fleece liner i can use. Should be good on more cold winter trips.
+TarpBuddy Thanks Dan , i have always liked the US system from what i have seen, and always wanted one. Tho this one i could get locally. I got lucky i found 1 bag for like 8 bucks i think maybe 12, i cant remember, the other i payed 50 with the hood and compression bag.
That was pretty interesting I have MSS and I really like it, I do like the extra hood that his had but I like the fact that the US bivy has a zipper. Jason
+Primal Outdoors Hello Jason, i like this system and i just got the hood. It is shaped so that it can come right down over your face so only your nose and mouth is visible if you wish. I like the fact that the US system has a zipper as well. lol I have used mine in a hammock that is almost impossible , lol .
Mornin, Kull & Peter; love this sleep-system. Very well explained & demonstrated. Had experiences these S.S Back in the day I used 2 be in the M.P.-S. have some very fond memories of many a fire & Coffee brewed up & then head 4 the Big-Bag ha-ha looking 4ward 2 the next part Friends.. Happy Trails From Down East.............................................ATB T ..........God Bless
+T.W. Milburn (skillet210) Thanks Terry, Pete did a great job going over this system, i feel as well. It is a warm set up, i cant wait to try mine in -20 and even below. God bless buddy.
I've served with the PPCLI and have done numerous winter exercises - I've seen guys use the bivy bag in the arctic tents which were heated by a coleman 2 burner stove (open flame) and a lantern. My concerns back then was that the bivy sac pretty much traps your body inside a cocoon which in a case of a tent fire could become fatal since it take a long time to get out of it. The ones we used back in the early 90's did not have a zipper going down the length of the bivy - I don't know if it's been modified today but it sure would be a great idea.
The tube type is what i have as well, and getting in and out is always a pain I think. The American bivy has a zipper, which is a great idea I think, wish the older one I have had one as well. lol .
Cj capp Princes Pat's! Worked with them many times from Winnipeg! I am from MN worked to help your deployments, I see you haven't made much progress on C vs F, Mylar is a great thing, I always learned as much as I and my troops taught! The MN GUARD never abandoned CA DEFFORCE, fought our own Feds, they always lose, I am retired and live across the lake from CA, we may not agree always, but this State will always your back, great people!
I have one of these in case of well disasters have All emergency camping gear! Just have to replace firearms! Looking to get a pump action Remington 12 gauge shotgun or a 410.
The only part of this system I don't have is the outer bag, my bivy bag came to me in slightly poor condition but after a bit of bush monkey patchwork it has served well although I recently grabbed the USGI bivy bag and like it a bit better even though it hasn't been on a trip with me yet.
+TurtleWolf Pack I have the bivy and two bags, tho i dont have the lining, i have the bivy as you seen as well. I would love to have a us bivy as well or system, like that as well.
Kullcraven Bushcraft The US bivy is $60 right now at one of my go to surplus stores in Edmonton, the one I grabbed is mint. I'm just waiting on some reproofing stuff for my Canadian one, it is still water proof but water doesn't bead off quit as well as it should any more. The stores name is Sebarms, the website sucks but the store is awesome. The US bags get mixed reviews with a lot of people reporting that their temperature ratings are over rated. They do button together and into the bivy, which is nice and they are synthetic but I haven't had any issues with the down getting wet in my Canadian bag.
Thanks for the info, Water doesnt bead right off of mine as well. I took my down sleep bag put it in the bivy and thru it outside for 8 hrs in constant rain, the down bag was dry, so i know its water proofed but after 30 or 40 years they could be retreated for sure. lol
Kullcraven Bushcraft some times all gore-tex needs is a good mild wash and dry then cook it in a dryer to reactivate the water proofing, I don't recall all the instructions but it is pretty simple and readily available right from the gore-tex site.
looks like a great system alot like ours but I haven't tried our mss system great vids thanks maybe the cana. is less expensive ours gets pricy thanks Pete and kull.....tom
+kabaruser Ours is down filled , so usually alot higher priced because of that, but our local surplus sells them 50 per bag, so not bad , these are 40 years old, some of them and still are usuable lol
+Jasonscreative Adventures Price will vary, at my local surplus each bag is 50 bucks, and the bivy is like 80. So the sleep system is 100 bucks and the bivy another 80. altho my bags are from 1974 and my other bag is from 1988. So these will last you a LONG time , i felt they were a good investment.
Appreciate the indepth review. But that looks like the most inconvenient thing. Id go with the American or the british one. If some woods ninja comes along, you're finished. ;)
+NewHampshire Bound haha lol well i was always wondering about the bag thing, but remember someone is always on patrol in the military, so you can sleep . Tho if a bear come along , well your a burrito. lol
+Paul Buikema LOL, well im not selling these, altho you can find canadian surplus stores and such online that sell this stuff. I got mine from my local surplus here. He has a couple left.
+Kullcraven Bushcraft Cool. No good surplus stores in Vancouver area that I have found. I really like my surplus US sleep system but this one looks good too, thanks Wayne. The link to the part 2 is locked in at private at the moment, just FWIW.
Oh thanks for the update, part 2 isnt released to public yet. i'll do so tomorrow. You can go online , and find the sleep systems i'm sure . alot of surplus stores online. At my local surplus he sells the 2 bag set for 100 bucks or 50 per bag.
+Kullcraven Bushcraft $100 for the set? thats quite outstanding, I will check out the online stuff and see what I find. If you make it back to BC, give me a heads up, would love to hit the woods with a tutor of your calibre.
Thank you Paul, not sure when or if i will ever make it out that way again, altho I am very glad i had the adventure i had and got to see that beautiful place. I'll send you a pm .
Thanks guys, I have used the US MMS for years and love it (on my second system now)but I hadn't seen the Canadian system . Just as I would have expected. Thanks Again !!
+mrbakerskatz Thank you, i have seen the us m,s and i like that set up as well. I love that the bivy has a zipper. The canadian system works well and Pete can verify that since he truely tested it out.
Kullcraven Bushcraft Yes , I do think the MSS is the cats meow ,but it appears the Canadian system might outperform it as far as cold protection. Thanks again !
@@kullcraven Yeah I found it 12lbs. I also found out the R value degrades some have said the system is cold when comparing newer -40 to -50C sleeping bags. That's I guess why the military gets rid of them after a while and gets newer ones. That's good to know so I'll be getting something warmer, lighter carry weight and better for -40C temps with liner and still be lighter than 12lbs by 2lbs. I thought I'd share that with you to help you save on future researching and help you provide extra information on your videos moving forward.
Thanks for the demo. Very useful. I bought one of these sleeping systems because it meets the demands of a cold Canadian winter's night.

+Jack Anderson Thank you I appreciate that.
Watching FS there shimmy out of that bag was a piece of comedy Gold...lol.
+Man Land (Midnight121) lol , well they are harder to get in to then out i think. lol Good thing they had patrols when people slept.
Excellent video Kull, I enjoyed every bit of it. Great sleep system for sure!
