- When Damien Hirst was a kid, he says, 'All my paintings were like bad Bacons'.
We invited Damien to Tate Britain to see the Francis Bacon retrospective. He tells us why he loves the Crucifixion and Head series': detail that vanishes the closer you get, paint like blood and guts. 'That's probably why I love Bacon paintings. When I first saw them they reminded me of places I'd seen in nightmares.'

I wish every halfwit bashing Hirst would take a few seconds to imagine the sort of work it takes to assemble the objects that form his art and realise the man was doing this stuff years before he'd even imagine anyone would pay a hundred quid for them. The craft in itself is worthy enough to be considered art, the fact that some of those installations actually confer profound statements regarding the nature of life and death itself makes it really good art.

I see Hirst as more of a modern conceptualist, that seems to be where alot of people get their dislike of him from. To most people art is done with paint not replicating or using objects, but objects here (for the most part aside from his dot series and later physical paintings) are objects that are conceptualised to form a certain expression or meaning and become the definition of what conceptual art, or any art, is. Just like some photographs reflect a conceptualised realism that already exists, the artist may not have made every object in the image, but the image now exists as an expression. I don't see Hirst as any different to photography. I think what he tries to do is too diverse for most people tho, tries his hand at too many avenues of expression for viewers to want to stay the whole journey. I think this is part of his charm though. I like that he might not be the most articulate or classic participant, his down to earth attitude of who gives a fuck keeps him a somewhat outsider artist along with his themes. I can't say i have liked everything he has done, but alot of people will knowingly or unknowingly be aware of one his images. Such as the shark tank and this to me proves his long standing. Love Hirst.
Regardless of what you think of Damien, those works he made with the white frames and the animals preserved in formaldehyde solution have always stuck with me and there’s something special about them in my mind. I don’t know much about the guy but I know I love the way those pieces look and feel
it's interesting to see so much hate directed toward hirst. I can see where people are coming from but that's the greatest thing about art is that really good art inspires strong emotions and commentary just like we're seeing here. like him or not I think on that merit alone one would have to consider him a great artist and I'm not a huge fan of his.

Hard to fathom the amount of money Hirst has made in his short career. Bacon's work has always blown my mind....Hirst is right up there with Jeff Koons as one of the biggest charlatans the art world has ever produced. He must giggle to himself at the wonder of his "success"

Then watch an interview with Bacon and he tells you exactly what pieces of art he was working with to create his images. Influences are seen as unsightly....every artist has them and makes comparison and tries to reach or attain the idea that originally struck them or spoke to them, motivating them to create art.

I find the sense of proportion and aesthetic in Bacon's work rather beautiful actually. As if there is an order a kind of ballet behind the brutality of the chaos & destruction. And the colours are so vivid and gorgeous. He depicts movement and action so well. You see so much in his work.
The sound of his jacket reminds me of Burton's Willy Wonka's gloves XD

I like the way Damien is self deprecating. He must wake up every morning, pinch himself and ask how he's got away with it for so long. At least in his heart he knows it's more about luck than talent in his case. Bacon of course is on another planet and Damien knows it.

Damien Hirst is definitely influenced by Francis Bacon, the series he did of skulls and shark jaws with withe dots and lines remind me of the Bacon lines in the paintings.
The 'triggers' are a good point too. To say that Damien Hirst is rubbish is in olde English " a load of cobblers me lord" because Hirst is creative. CREATIVITY and EXPERIMENTATION plus some talent helps. Some of Hirts's works the Shark Tanks...are a bit over the top, the For the love of God especially.

Francis Bacon was a great visionary full of poetry. Hurst is conceptionist who relies on gimmicks. The comparison is ridiculous but of course the Tate has to feed the modern machine to keep relevant.

We all tend to forget to hear that paintings are primarily musical compositions (essentially non-narrative symphonies) rather than visual images. Surprisingly, for the Popes of Bacon, I would chose 'Sinfonia da Requiem', Op. 20, 1940, by Benjamin Britten in and 'Fratres' (1991 Version for String Orchestra and Percussion) by Arvo Pärt; the so-called 'screaming popes' are actually tragically tranquil and sedately serene and curiously clam; but all this is entirely subjective; neither 'right' nor 'wrong'. I also hear Vaughan Williams's 4th Symphony (1934) & Vaughan Williams's 6th Symphony (1944) in Bacon's 'Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion' (1944). But the main composer l always associate most strongly with Francis Bacon is the Swedish composer, Allan Pettersson (9 September 1911 - 20 June 1980) - a vastly underrated and underplayed composer; but not surprisingly still, I noticed someone on RUclips posted up Allan Pettersson's 6th Symphony juxtaposed with Bacon's 'Fragment of a Crucifixion', 1950; do check it out. Allan Pettersson is an ideal composer for 'listening' to Francis Bacon with both sharing the same similar strident sound world of primordial pulsations and putrefactions. I also think Arnold Schöenberg's 'Pélleas und Melisande' op.5, (1903); and Arnold Schöenberg's 'Transfigured Night, Version for Full String Orchestra' (1917) 'go well' with Bacon's sound-palette; as does Alban Berg's 'Three Pieces for Orchestra', Op. 6, 1913-1915; and Edgard Varèse,'s 'Amériques' (for huge orchestra with sirens)1918-1921, Edgard Varèse's Intégrales (1923), Edgard Varèse's 'Arcana' for large orchestra (1925-1927) are paradigmatic Bacon sound-worlds. Bacon was a great symphonic composer.

He actually says that the merit of a Bacon painting is due to the viewer/'s "interpretation" (barf) and not the doing of the artist @ 1:48. And, yes, even Hirst's speech sounds too lazy to analyze a thought before he mumbles it out. He is among the majority of contemporary "artists" who use shock value and scale to attempt at making a large statement and drawing attention to themselves.

I like bacon, both his soft and his crisp paintings. I like listening to Damien Hirst and his squeaky jacket. He dears to be naive and spontaneous. A lot of success sometimes make you relax. He leaves you feeling smart.

The resentment and hate towards Damien Hirst is honestly appalling to me. Learning about him in art class I fell in love with his work and discovering Francis Bacon really explains where his art comes from. Damien Hirst is Francis Bacon in 3D, of course, that's a giant simplification but overall it's true. When people look at Damiens art I don't understand how no one ever sees the beauty in A Thousand Years for example which shows *real* life and death in a cycle where the death of a cow sustains a maggot which produces a fly which in turn dies to start the cycle over again. Or his giant bronzes which look like mundane objects in giant size or a child being exploited for greed. His work on pharmaceuticals represents the corruption in the medical market taking advantage of people with mental illness. And the best part about it is his link with psychology, so my interpretation may not be the same as someone else's, and we're both right.

A good point. Having seen a bit of Hirst's work up close I have to say that i think most of it will quickly be forgotten, though when he succeeds at making a piece, which is even rarer than he thinks, it truly can be amazing and I think will exist as an influence for a long time... provided anyone actually sees such pieces again rather than just his more famous stuff. I am thinking specifically of his painting done with dead flies. It is absolutely brutally beautiful.
Spin Paintings
Those Hirst "spin paintings", we were churning those out in the late 60s! We used spinning record decks and poster paint! There were even people who set up shop on seaside piers etc where you could make your own spin paintings! Hirst is a total charlatan, and he has been embraced by charlatans!!

No book reproduction captures near the power of these close-ups in the Tate. Wish the Tate would do a series on Bacon with Hirst just doing this. He’s worlds better than the cliched crap and hype that comes out of curators’ and dealers’ mouths. You’ve got to really see these grand paintings close, in their blinged out gilded frames, to enjoy the paint. I saw a video close-up of the Triptych of George Dyer dying and in the left panel where he’s hunched on the toilet you can see a black deathly goo eating his face. In decades of looking at Bacon books I never noticed it. In the triptych of Freud that sold for $150m you see his face oozing around Bacon’s cubical framing device, same deal. You’ve got to get in close to see the plasticity and the detail. I would call him an action painter, not Pollock. His brushstrokes are raw and freeze that kinetic energy. There is no “action” to drip painting or real painting for that matter.

Hirst sounds nearly illiterate. He doesn't bring himself to his work, he just looks for gimmicks and incorporates that "stuff" into his presentations. He forgets the magic because he's not a visionary, he's a cliche just like his BS presentations. Imitation game.

Hirst is the playboy of the debasement of art .. Warhol was the grandaddy of it . Anish Kapoor is the brat . Koons the all American psycho and Abramovich the bloodthirsty tyrant .. everything they've made put together in a room would not have enough warmth to light a candle . These people are corporate entities , ie corpses . They justify their creations with 10 page theories.They are props put in place to destroy the soul the same way the family unit, and culture has been systematically destroyed. Real art has never had to fight as hard to be understood and heard. Just look at today's Instagram .. the ones with huge followings are retired housewives , who don't have a wrinkle on their brows and get around with their Maybelline and designer pants .

There is nothing worse then listening to someone elses opinion of an artists piece before you have formulated your own. This spoils the purity of your first impression.

I don’t get why we care about his opinion on Francis bacon. You don’t need to analyse good art. It speaks for itself. Hirst is definitely miles away from Bacon, not even close, culturally/artistically, under any point of view.

Yeah... so RICH = GOOD? If there wheren't these (few) extremely rich and bored collectors Hirst would not sell anything at all. Just putting diamonds on a skull (which already make a tremendous amount of money just for te material) or cutting a cow in half and painting it golden so that even the last idiot understands his "message" does not make it art, It is just a huge self - sellout. Hirst is the symbol for these times where the "art" scene became nothing but a huge industry fill of hedgefonds and people who do not care for art at all.

First you suggest that art and modern culture should be separate, right? Then you totally contradict that suggestion! So anyway what you are saying is that art is a commodity, a product for sale. I agree with you, and I also love genuine, ORIGINAL conceptual art. My doubts are that Hirst has stolen those loose guidelines, and aided by profit oriented, art industry grandees has manufactured a shallow, unimaginative body of work purely for profit. Its the way of the world, but is it integrity?

I don't know much about art. But when I see his painting I feel very much like someone understood pain and is telling me continue with life. I guess what am trying to say is you need a certain kind of pain for the artwork to make sense. If it hasn't happened to you, I guess that would make you a very happy person. Or at least happier than me.
