Resurgence was disappointing at best, but the original Independence Day film is a goddamn timeless classic film that deserves to be placed into the United States National Film Registry for its impact and legacy of giving birth to pretty much every modern CGI-filled science-fiction blockbuster film that came after it. Genuinely surprised it hasn't already been placed into the United States National Film Registry.
This scene is great because of the build-up to this moment. It didn't feel rushed or fake. The viewer was taken through the events leading up to this specific scene. Nowadays we as the viewers are just thrown into the action with no attachment towards it.
On the one hand, I agree completely with you that movies are written crappily these days. On the other hand, let's not forget that movies are usually made to cater to the widest audience as possible based on pre-screening focus group surveys, so it's less "They can't write deeply nuanced movies" and more "The modern cinema goer has the attention span of a hyperactive dog".
1:53 that scream sound effect would later be used by Allicia Botti when she sees a mouse inside Clarabel in the Thomas and Friends sixth series episode Thomas, Percy and The Squeak.
The problem with Independence Day is that nothing that follows reaches the heights of this scene. It is still an enormously entertaining blockbuster, but the arrival of the aliens and the attack are masterpieces of editing (how the scene jumps from place to place ratcheting up the tension), soundtrack and sheer awe. They are still unparalleled to this day.
They should probably re-release all beloved classic films, like this, the original Star Wars movies, Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Armageddon, the first two Alien and Terminator movies respectively, and Gladiator; and maybe show them in IMAX and 3D.
Just the sound of the Laser powering up before it fires gives me goosebumps. One of the best scenes in movie history & David Arnold composed one of the best scores which made this film for me.

Miniatures rock! Stand the test of time much better than crappy CGI.
Liked the movie for no reason to like I hope it was good.
Yeah it's one of the best films ever, and I'm not even American
A children’s show has a sound effect from a giant fireball laying waste to New York lol
But there was also another scream sound effect in that episode. Is the other scream also from something else?
1:25 "Work overtime" they said, "It will be fun" they said...
He was stealing money.
2:08 "Mr. President, allow me to demonstrate the awesome lethality of the Alan Parsons Project. FIRE THE LASER!"
Well actually that was just footage from the movie independence Day. The real laser is going to be a lot like that.
Ya scary
Ahh I see you are a man of culture.
"Well actually, that was just footage from the movie Independence Day, but the real laser would be a lot like that, ya.... Scary"
Good one Mr. Evil
Muahahha .....m muahahahah . Muahha. Haha . ..hahaha ....ha ..........ha....h
@@legothoron1 Dr. Evil I did not spend 6 years at evil medical school to be called Mr. Thank you very much.
If this happened in real life people wouldn't run they would pull out their i phones and take pictures.
+Markeem Jones ...but not in 1996.
Universe Oh no not 96 too early like 2014.
HAHA! That would be true now.
So true. So true.
and posting it on FB
Watching these kind of movies makes you realize how hopeless we are as humans if this ever did happen
Exactly. That's why these people need to stop messing around in deep space before they unintentionally invite these guys to destroy us.
@@cameron_0496 we have nukes
@@Jermain-cz4bh nuclear weapons did not work against their energy shields.
@@Jermain-cz4bh I stand by my original statement. Nothing further.
@@cameron_0496 I love this comment for some reason. Just the boldness of it.
Oh man this scene was so woah on the big screen I remembered. Never gets old. They really should put it back on the big screen on this.
Some places are showing 1 and 2 :)
+Johnathan Alvarez 5PM on Thursday most theaters are showing the first one!
They should probably re-release all beloved classic films, like this, the original Star Wars movies, Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Armageddon, the first two Alien and Terminator movies respectively, and Gladiator; and maybe show them in IMAX and 3D.
Second film I saw at the cinema (and much more wow than the first film I saw; Beethoven)
Do you remember the alien dissection scene? My sister saw it in theaters and said everyone jumped.
Watch this scene in a big screen, w dolby surround, subwoofer effects in 1996 was...priceless!!!!
Just the sound of the Laser powering up before it fires gives me goosebumps. One of the best scenes in movie history & David Arnold composed one of the best scores which made this film for me.
The du-du-duh du-du-duh was also used in the sequel when the aliens were about to blow up the moon base with one of those lazers.
Some of my favorite moments in childhood was seeing this few times in the theater with the parents. One of the few movies we were hooked when this came out!
This will be us soon....prayers 🙏🏼
I hope not!
LOL what are you guys fearful for? 😂
Best destruction scenes!
Alex Patt I know right?
+Alex Patt They still hold up really well today because they were models mixed with some CGI looks better than all the way CGI like in 2012 or other disaster movies.
Eh, I personally think 2012 holds a candle to this in terms of destruction.
+Master Penguin its funny cuz that's one of the many movies where I think the CGi looks great. Especially the LA destruction scene and volcano explosion.
Alex Patt tv
Groundbreaking 90s effects, this along with Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park showed just how great effects were back then
this movie was a real thing back there... the new movie is just mewww...
The new movie was great lots of killing and violence
But not much else. It was like most every modern CGI movie: great during the first view if you don't try to delve too deep, but just more white noise after that.
+Saiman Quazi That's what Wikipedia said.
Dude everything is CGI nowadays. What hasnt been CGI for the last 10yrs? Fuck, you act if it's something new. It will always be CGI, give it a fucking rest.
the new movie is crap.
This movie was a damn masterpiece ! I never get tired of watching it it's so good.
Hello kitty
12 year old me literally had my mind blown, stunning vfx then, and still hold up now!
I love watching this with DTS, the sound is amazing!
I had to come back and watch the original to remind myself that Independence Day 2 never existed and that the first one will forever be #epic
That's ridiculous.
You are absolutely CORRECT! The second one was crap!
I think the destruction and sound design still holds up to this day.
Yep, and (perhaps unsurprisingly) the movie snagged the Best Visual Effects Oscar (which, let's face it, was *very* well-deserved).
Ever notice how there's no background music whatsoever during the entire scene? Only roaring fire and panicked people. It's what makes it so gripping, just like the whole T-Rex attack scene in Jurassic Park 1
This scene is genius. It's slowed down on purpose, there's no background music and sets the tone for how powerful that weapon system is.
2:01 best quote ever.
Что за дерьмо
watched this on laser disc with that huge disc, looks fantastic back then and now
As a kid, this scene always excited me. I found it cool how massive destruction came from a single building used as a starting point, my favorite scene in the film
But ive always wondered what the guy at 1:25 was doing
Getting rid of evidence of accounting fraud....
i use to say he was robbing the place. but now i say he was working. despite aliens invading.
I think there could be a whole movie about this guy
@@banderas2000 he doesn't look like a thief at all
Grabbing whatever he could on his way out.
By the way, it's Volker Engel, the VFX supervisor of ID4. Nice guy, worked with him in the (now very distant) past.
Special effects in this film were amazing. It still looks believable now. Seamless world-building.
And then 2021 showed us that you don't need a big fancy mothership to besiege, conquer and destroy Washington D.C.
Only the white house
Only Biden and Harris ;)
Ouch.
A couple of idiots briskly walked into the Capitol and took selfies, and that, in your mind= total conquering and destruction. You really aren't living on planet Earth dude. Yeah, tell your grandkids your incredible war stories about the time that one dude stole a senator's podium and instagrammed it.
@@Sam_50210 uncalled for lol
Iconic! Still just as good as the year it was released ❤️
This movie is really way ahead of its time....too cool that u can't believe its from 1996
And it was filmed in Fall 1995
At 11 years old, watch this masterpiece 3 times in the cinema, best time ever
When I was a kid I showed my 80yo grandma this scene and she thought it was real war footage. 😂 r.i.p. grandma
These are some of the best special effects in cinema history. Possibly THE best.
That's partially because they used practical effects like models
The way empire states building blows up looks so real
1:01 the face you make when you knew you screwed up
The sound of the helicopter grinding itself up is extremely satisfying
Great alien movies like these just don’t exist anymore. One of my top 10 favorite movies ever.
Man, they really build the suspense leading to the attack incredibly well in this film, one of the best guilty pleasures ever.
I’m glad one day, when I was a little kid, I saw this movie sitting on my parents shelf having no clue what it was . Probably one of the coolest movies I’ve ever discovered on my own
Roland Emmerich just took elements of every film and TV alien invasion classic and molded into one huge blockbuster extravaganza. War of the Worlds and V would be so proud. 👍🏻
Earth: *Exists*
Aliens: “It’s free real estate.”
Julius Eriksson Nice
This was one of my favorite childhood destruction scenes
Saw this when i was 8 years old i was blown away and i think this movie really got me into sci fi
I still love it to this day
0:55 When you don't have complete in time a test in school.
Lol 90s action films threw alot of cars in slow motion.
I know right
"oh crap"
Yea that is the whole of 2020 in a nutshell.
I always love the fact that with an alien ship above the city this one guy is so dedicated to his job he’s at the office filing papers and gets blown up lmao
One of the things that gets lost in this is like....we live in a post 9/11 world now. It's really hard to get people to understand how indestructible we felt like some of these huge skyscrapers were. They seemed like nothing could take them down.
Hint: It wasn't the Arabs who did it
A movie that never needed a sequel....
I walked out of the cinema during the sequel
This movie will NEVER get old!
1:24 this guys really dedicated to his job
I remember the preview for this in the movie theater. Everyone started cheering when they showed the White House getting blown up. 😄
LOL americans hated their lying politicians back in the day
Miniatures rock! Stand the test of time much better than crappy CGI.
Fun notation: Because the helicopter was not in the shot when the white house exploded, to have it blend in better with the fireball, you can see the helicopter itself explode and has its own miniature fireball to seamlessly blend in better. Brilliant work by the miniature team. Have to freeze frame it of course.
0:09 oh look guys, it’s John Connor from Terminator Genysis
Where?
@@zacharyxavier2227 A tie guy
Back in the day saw this movie in theatre..amazing movie
As a kid this was the most epic scene of all time and is a damn classic man. So many great memories watching this movie
You know the best part?
There's no music or soundtrack during destruction phase. Just people screaming, and explosions and death.
It really hits
This film was revolutionary, as a blockbuster in the 90’s.
