  • The 2024 garden season is officially underway, as we pot up our first batch of plants we started from seed a few weeks ago. These are broccoli and cabbages that I started, which are now ready for their new expanded home. During our time together, I will share with you all of the things that are going through my head as we head into the growing season. Some are things to watch out for, some are things to prepare now so you're ready, and a few others are supplies you may want to purchase now so you have them when you need them. This is my I think 4th year starting my own plants for the garden from seed, and I love sharing what I've learned so far with you guys. If you have any specific questions I didn't answer in the video, post them in the comments and I'll do my best to try to get back to you ♥

Vinegar water in a spray bottle takes care of slugs. My husband teased me horribly the year that I tried mulching cabbage with straw as it drew a ton of slugs. He thought that me going out in the dark with a flashlight and squirt bottle was hilarious! I save the straw for potatoes now.

I'm always so excited when springtime finally arrives so that I can start seedlings! You should consider a soldering iron to make those holes in your cups. The small ones are typically under $20 and burn through that plastic like butter, which I feel helps preserve the integrity of the cups longer so you can get another season out of them. I also use mine to make holes in the bottom of milk jugs for winter sowing drainage. Cheers!

Dixondale onions are excelent! Be sure to buy the correct "day length" variety for your location.I am trying something new. Starting 200 Beefstake tomatoes to give out at our local food pantry. If they all do well, that will produce 5,000 pounds of food. Bonus is the opportunity for some folks to be introduced to gardening.

I’ve followed migardener’s onion seed starting method and it’s yet to fail me. I get a one of those sturdy plastic to go containers (reuse!) and put seed starting mix in it and just dump the packet of seeds in. I get like 50-70 little sprouts in that one 6x6 container. And I will take it outside fairly early because they can withstand low temps. Once they get a little more sturdy I’ll transplant them.

Broccoli is ALWAYS trying to stretch its a relentless plant lol unless you have the lights literally almost on top of them they stretch. I found some articles and videos showing that broccoli would grow roots along the stem when buried deep like tomatoes, basically its like a 60-70% chance it will do that so , some do some don't. I have all of my seeds started other than the heat lovers like beans and cucurbits lol our zones are shifting here in Canada as well, it hasnt been updated yet but id say we are about a month ahead of schedule here. Ive had my baby cabbages outside in their pots for a week or so now and one night I thought I killed them, the soil in the pots froze solid but theyre still alive and well so ya that was a shock.
Last season I had baby earwigs in my cabbages!! Lost 6 plants to them.
You can start like 30-40 onions per pot, they seperate easily and have no issues growing together for the first 3 months or so

I start hundreds of onions every January in one of the large grocery store strawberry clamshell containers. There's really nothing else started inside while I have those going and by the time I need the space for other things, the onion container is fine to go outside into the cold frame. This is one big money saving crop to do from seed and I get to try many different kinds that they don't sell as bulbs.

I like to plant seeds in milk jugs, cut in half. I put potting soil in the bottom half, stab holes in the bottom of the jug and plant many seeds in them. My driveway has multiple milk jugs out in the sun with tomatoes, peppers, onions, flowers…It works like a terrarium. I’ve seen people keep their milk jugs out in the snow, but we don’t get much snow in south Texas. Thanks for these videos, even though I’m ahead of you in planting, you give some good tips!

I started 27 cabbage (3 varieties) that have already been potted up and I'm hardening them off. Ordered some agro-covers to keep the insects off. The onions started from seed are also getting hardened off. I'll plant peas soon, probably this weekend. I will plant those cabbage here in zone 5b soon and don't worry about frost because they actually like the cooler weather. I have grown them in the snow before and it was my best year ever. Less pest pressure too. My garden is 25ft. long so I think I'll get two rows. Planning to ferment and make sauerkraut. You are correct about those covers. Need to make sure there are no entry points for those little moths to get into them. I'm glad to hear your review for those zip up covers. My frost covers are a little dingy too and I'll use them on the really cold nights. I'm growing spinach for sure. Potatoes will go in a week later like your schedule. Thanks for sharing.

My seedlings are looking so good in the house. I really want to plant my cabbages in the garden this weekend to avoid up-potting. I cover my cabbages with a white mesh cloth that keeps out the cabbage moths and I can actually get some cabbage. Can't wait to get my hands dirty. I'm waiting for my onions to arrive from Dixondale, also.

I’m between a beginner and veteran canner, still learning and coordinating my garden with my food preservation. I was just thinking as you were talking about greens how shocked I still am by how much I actually use canned greens. I never ever thought they would be a regular addition to our meal planning but I use them even more than green beans I think. Soups, stews, casseroles, pasta, stir fry, just whatever. Very very versatile and so good! not gross like store-bought slimy greens. I’m going to use your advice and trim more greens and can them up too now in addition to the kale, spinach, collards etc

It's nice to have somebody to watch with a similar growing season. We are zone 6b and high desert in central oregon and have such a short growing season. Our last frost date is mid-June. So, I have been trying to really lean into cold weather crops. I am doing a lot of root crops this year.

Love your seed starting videos! 🌱
I'm limited on space for growing, but I've found that by the time I'm planting tomatoes and peppers, or at least before I have to pot them up which takes up more room, I can start hardening off my onions, pansies, brassicas and other cool weather plants so they don't have to live on the seed rack anymore. I can put them on the table at night if it's too cold, but otherwise they'll go outside to harden off in the day, then plant them out in early-mid April where I live (last frost early-mid May). So that helps me for space issues 😊

I grow Malabar spinach instead. it doesn't bolt and go bitter like normal does.
