    It feels like I've been watching RUclips mattress reviews for eight years over the past week, and I have to say I've seen literally every RUclipsr and blogger on this topic. Good Bed has the BEST reviews of any of them (I really LOVE the organized links to the different topics). Thank you, Good Bed! It's due to your videos I managed to narrow my selection down and pull the trigger.

It is very gratifying to know that our reviews have been helpful to you in making your decision. :) If you're willing, please be sure to give them a thumbs-up, which will help other consumers find them more easily.
      I hope your new mattress is a great match for you!

      I actually bought the Purple 4 and Nest Bedding Alexander Plush simultaneously so I could try them out during the 100-night trial window! I need super soft, and wound up keeping the Nest Bedding despite it sleeping hotter than the Purple. Good Bed was accurate that the purple material stops collapsing after a certain point and feels firm for lighter sleepers (I'm 130lb). I would have liked to keep the Purple because it was perfect in every other respect - I just wish the polymer walls were thinner so it required less weight to sink in! So far I'm very happy with my Nest Bedding, but I do wake up sweating too much.

      @@legit.jacquie I tried Nest Alexander few years ago. Was so hot I felt like I was smothering. My new purple 4 is so comfortable and temperature neutral, but it hurts my hips. I thought the collapsing grid would be pressure neutral. I'm so discouraged. Good luck with yours.

    This is the first time I've heard that the 4 has two levels of purple grid, and it makes sense and seems smart. I've slept on an Original Purple for over a year and I've slept great. I've upgraded to a Purple 4 and it arrives tomorrow. The only reason I upgraded to the 4 is because I have an adjustable bed and while I'm sitting up in bed the Original Purple grid completely collapses and my butt is essentially on the foam beneath the grid (because that's where most of my weight shifts). I hope with the 4 that I'll still experience the grid effect in an propped up position. I've been debating the upgrade for several months but if I had watched this review earlier I wouldn't have waited so long. This is one of the best reviews of anything I've found on RUclips! Thumbs up'd, but can't subscribe because I think my search for a mattresses is over. Excellent work describing this and your insight is obviously well informed.

    We recently got the .2 bed and love it and don't find it too firm for us!
    We got to test all four beds at our local Mattress Firm here in Seattle
    The .2 is the firmest of the four types (.2, Original, .3, .4 - firmest to least firm)
    If you are like my wife and I, you might not need to go to the more expensive .3 or .4.
    Before this bed we had always slept on standard coil mattresses on the firm side.
    We are in our very late 50's. She is about 175 lb and I am 190 lb.
    My wife is a combo back and side sleeper and I am a combo stomach and side sleeper.
    Since we aren't used to foam or soft mattresses, we find the .2 to be heaven!

    Just wanted to say thanks for your efforts. Your website and reviews have been spot on accurate. After taking your website sleep test it recommended the purple 4. We purchased the purple 4 around 2 months ago.
    The first night I was sold...after years of waking up and tossing and turning I have slept soundly and have much less shoulder and back pain. I would also recommend the purple sheets with this bed as they are by far the most comfortable and the stretchiness of the sheets do allow the bed to perform as it should. Any non stretching sheet IMHO would reduce the performance of the purple 4. I also use the purple pillow and it is perfect with the bed. The pillow would not work with a firmer bed at least for me but with the purple 4 it is perfect for me. I am 225# and very active and I really look forward to bed time now. LOL. Thank you for your review you were a big factor in our purchase. Best of fortune to you.

      Hi Chris -- Thanks for your comment. I'm very glad to hear that our video was helpful for you!
      FWIW, it will certainly take more than 1 night to get a real sense of how it does for you. This is true for any mattress but is especially true for the Purple, which is likely to feel very different from anything you might have been used to before.
      Nonetheless, once your body has had a chance to get used to it, it would be an awesome help to other mattress shoppers to share your experience as a review on GoodBed, where the max # of people can benefit from it. If you're willing, here's a link where you can share your review of this particular model:

      After just over a week sleeping on the Purple 2, I'm re-watching your video and starting to think that I need to "upgrade" my Purple 2 to a Purple 3 before my 100-nights are up. I still wake up with back pain but don't know if it's still an adjustment period or the 2" grid is too firm. I am a back sleeper 90% of the time and weight 230 pounds. I'm thinking of waiting for the first month and then make a decision. Also, I am wondering if my old foundation base sitting on a frame is making my new purple feel harder than it should. The purple base is only $174 which is a good price.

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  6 лет назад +2

      Hi Steven -- Re: your question about the foundation, I'm not sure I see how your old foundation could be making the mattress feel harder than a new foundation would. The Purple foundation is not designed to have any "give" so if anything I would think your old foundation would have more give (eg, if it's broken down a bit), making your mattress feel softer, not harder. I hope that's helpful.

    Simply outstanding!! Very comprehensive, in-depth, review of this mattress, which I just bought. You are the first one to explain/describe the linear/nonlinear aspect of the 2.5/1.5 inch top layer providing 4 inches of Purple's hyper-elastic gel. Your closing analysis of the price differences between the original through to the Purple .4 was something I could completely relate to. Specifically, as a side sleeper, I can't wait to see if the "non-linear" extra money I spent does in fact translate to a more tranquil sleep, something I absolutely am in search of. Thank you for the effort you put into creating this informative video. Very, very much appreciated!!

I commented on the Purple's FB page about "upgrading" and they said that if you buy the Original (or any purple) mattress, you can upgrade within that 100 night trial basis and only pay difference (or return for full refund). So it sounds like I'm buying the Original Queen and IF I think it's too soft, get the Purple .2 or .3 within 100 nights (white glove delivery regardless)! It's a win-win for the consumer!

    I'm still watching your bed reviews. I originally bought the Tempur Adapt Medium Hybrid and after 3 months did not care for it. At first I thought it was wonderful, then 2 months later I started having back aches. When I turned on the bed I felt like I could feel the coils below since the mattress appeared thin to me. Supposed to be 11 in mattress, I measured 10. I used a purple mattress pad and purple sheets with my tempur pedic and slept very cool. I'm a hot sleeper. Then I changed out the mattress pad and sheets with a tempur pedic brand mattress pad and just a 500 thread count sheet set and woke up sweating. I went back to the purple mattress pad and sheets and slept cool again. So I believe its not just the tempur adapt mattress that keeps you cool, but what kind of mattress pad and sheets you use. Purple got it right. The tempur mattress pad was horrible, didn't even fit their own mattresses properly, they fit very loose like they are too big. All the reviews on them said the same. What a waste of money. With the quality of purple's sheets and mattress pad along with much research I have done, I now believe the purple 4 mattress will be a better fit for me. I got rid of my Tempur Adapt because I just felt over the years it was going to wear down fast due to the thinness of the memory foam. Theres a reason its on the low end of all the Tempur Pedics. High dollar for there low end mattress. I felt the coils too often with turning and when first sitting on the bed, just bothered me. After waiting a month, I'm finally getting my Purple 4 delivered today, I can't wait.

      Hi Jen Marie. This is great information that could really illuminate how the Tempur-Adapt Hybrid worked for you (or didn't in this case). Your feedback would be even more helpful if you would be willing to add this as a review on GoodBed, where people who are shopping for a mattress and looking for unbiased information will find it most easily. So far there are 30 ratings for the Tempur-Adapt line, but no written reviews yet. If you're willing, here is a direct link to where you can submit your review of this mattress: www.goodbed.com/mattress-line/tempur-adapt/
      And please do report back on how you find the Purple 4 -- based on your deductions from using their mattress topper, sounds like it might be just what you need. Thanks again for the great comments.

      @@goodbed I will do that right now. I think if weight is an issue, unfortunately going with the more expensive thicker Tempur Pedic would be the way to go, and if you have the dollars. Slept on my Purple 4 last nite. I know I will need to give it time to really test it out. So far first impression from a 220+ person. The 4 is VERY soft. So much I thought there was no way it could support a large person. I stood corrected. You feel like you sink down a bit. I'm an avid side sleeper, rarely sleep on my back ever. I felt cradled last nite, no pressure on my hips and shoulder. I did find it a bit of a struggle to turn on the other side, more then what I seen watching videos, but these were very trim ppl. I have to say I slept pretty darn good. Woke up with no pains at all. It really is the most comfortable bed I ever slept on, even better then my first nite on my Tempur pedic medium Hybrid. My dogs slept good as well. My male black lab was hogging my side of the bed and didn't move all nite. Every time I turned over there he was in the same position till the morning, and I had to wake him up. I also bought the platform base, another mattress pad and sheets which I had a set already, but love them sooo much. I normally sleep very hot, but even with a new Korean mink blanket I woke up cool. You can jump up and down on this mattress and not feel the bottom, a very thick sturdy mattress which seems built to last. I'm thinking this one will be a keeper.

      Terrific. The way gel columns collapse when compressed beyond a certain point is a very unique property from which Purple's mattresses benefit. Happy your first impressions are so positive!

    • @fastmoneyflow
      @fastmoneyflow 4 года назад

      @@hollydolly088 Ok, sad story coming up. To be honest the Purple 4 was the best mattress I ever owned, but i was only able to keep it for 3 weeks after I was diagnosed with breast cancer. With all the medical bills that would be coming in, I had to return the Purple mattress because I knew I would not be able afford the payments. I ended up getting the Helix Nightfall according to the quiz they give you to determine the best mattress for your body type. The absolute WORST mattress I have ever owned, by far. I wake up with constant back aches, shoulder pains, leg pains. Most nights I hardly sleep at all it soo uncomfortable. Unfortunately with my financial circumstances I'm stuck with this mattress because the payments are cheap. I hate it sooo bad. They do not even make the Nightfall anymore, gee I wonder why. The purple was the only mattress where I woke up pain free and slept very good. The only thing I was not too happy with Purple, is that if you live in a rural area, you are responsible for finding a charity to take your mattress if they could not find one, or you won't get a refund. So ironically, I should have qualified for the charity, but the buyer could not be the charity. So I had to try and find someone in more need of this mattress then myself with a stage 4 cancer. I cried when they hauled it away :-( I'll never be able to afford another one. I think you will love yours.

      Hi Chris -- Thanks for your comment. FYI, we actually have reviewed several beds specifically designed for taller/larger people:
      * WinkBed Plus: www.goodbed.com/reviews/winkbed-plus-mattress-review/
      * Helix Nightfall: www.goodbed.com/reviews/helix-nightfall-mattress-review/
      * King Koil World Extended Life: www.goodbed.com/reviews/king-koil-world-extended-life-mattress-preview/ -- this one has the best guarantee against body impressions we've seen, but AFAIK is only available in the LA area right now.
      In addition, we also have the Saatva HD and Brooklyn Titan in our lab right now, so our reviews of those will be published within the next 4-8 weeks. FYI, once our in-depth reviews of these mattresses is published, they will be available on our site here:
      * Saatva HD: www.goodbed.com/mattress-model/saatva-hd/
      * Brooklyn Titan: www.goodbed.com/mattress-model/brooklyn-titan/
      If you haven't already, you can also subscribe to our RUclips channel or follow us on Facebook to be notified when it comes out.
      Separately, regarding the "sagging" you're experiencing, if the whole bed is collapsing in the middle, the issue could be your foundation rather than the mattress. You might want to take a look at our guide to choosing a frame/foundation: www.goodbed.com/mattress-foundation/
      I hope that's helpful.

    I tried the Purple 3 about 2 yrs ago....it felt awesome to me (side sleeper), but my husband didn't like to feel the grid against his body. I liked the grid feeling though and felt like I was floating. We also didn't want to spend like $4k (with tax) .....I'm sorry, but it's too expensive! We ended up getting a Novaform Serafina plush king pearl gel foam mattress at Costco on sale for $700 (was $200 off), which is fine for us, but sometimes my arms go numb so it's still not plush enough for me....though my husband likes it.

    Hello - Was wondering if any of the Purple Mattresses have any type of lasting smells - Whether it be a chemical smell or a normal "Purple Mattress" smell - And if so did it go away with time ?
    Thank You for such a great in depth review

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Larry -- Thanks for your question (and your kind words 😊). We tested both the original Purple mattress and the Purple 4 mattress and didn't experience any kind of lasting smell with either of them.
      That said, in case you're considering the Purple pillow, that one is a completely different story. It had a very pronounced smell that lasted for weeks. TBH I'm not sure why there would be such a difference between the pillow and the mattress on this front, however I can say with certainty that the smell we experienced with the pillow was not present at all in either of the mattresses, even when they were first opened.
      I hope that's helpful.

    What a great review! I’m a curvy side sleeper with some autoimmune symptoms that mimic rheumatoid arthritis: aches and pains and muscle soreness. Also, my husband is a very active sleeper, So motion transfer is a huge problem for us. Do you recommend the P4 in our case? I guess I could just try it...

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for your kind words +edidenton! In terms of motion transfer, in case you missed it, we do cover that in the video at 22:30. On balance, we definitely found the motion isolation in the Purple 4 to be good. That said, given how sensitive it sounds like you are to your partner's movements, it may be worth noting that there are options out there that are better on this front. Of course, even in your case, motion isolation is going to be one of numerous factors to consider, so if the other characteristics of this mattress sound like a good match for you, and you think the small shortcoming that we identified with the motion isolation would not be a problem for you, then I do think it would be worth giving it a try. I hope that's helpful.

    Beat mattress review I’ve seen. Nice job. Bought a memory foam ten years ago great for sleeping initially but one thing I didn’t consider was “play time” with the GF. How is the purple 4 in this category?

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  6 лет назад +5

      Hi +CousinPete420 -- Thanks for your question (and kind words!).
      The Purple 4 will be very different from memory foam on this front, since both the top "hyper elastic polymer" layer and the springs underneath are quick-responding materials (vs memory foam, which has a "slow" responsiveness and typically has a block of poly foam underneath which doesn't offer much in the way of bounce either). That said, the Purple 4 won't feel quite like a traditional innerspring mattress either, due to the thickness of that top layer which does provide a bit of sink. I think the responsiveness section at 20:16 and the cushioning depth section at 18:35 will provide the best insights for you on this front.
      I hope that's helpful.

    Question: I am a side sleeper, 135 lbs and I have lower back pain and shoulder/hip numbness. I bought the Purple 4 because every review said it was great for side sleepers and pressure relief, but I still wake up with numbness. Not sure where to go from here. I'm thinking of something with memory foam, but it's hard to know where to turn since I already bought the bed that was supposed to be perfect for my issues. Could you possibly make a recommendation?

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Tiffany -- Thanks for your question, and sorry I missed this earlier. I'm terribly sorry to hear that the Purple 4 hasn't been working out for you. While I'm definitely surprised to hear that you are waking up with numbness, we did note in this video why lighter and/or less curvy side sleepers won't get much additional benefit from the extra inch(es) of hyper-elastic polymer on the Purple 4 (vs say, the Purple 3 and perhaps even the original Purple). For the benefit of other readers, we discuss suitability by sleep position and weight starting around 14:18 in the video.
      In terms of where to go from here, based on your experience on the Purple 4, it sounds to me like you have some rather acute pressure relief needs that should probably be prioritized above other factors. For situations like that, I do think it's hard to beat really high quality memory foam. Have you looked at Tempur-Pedic for example?
      www.goodbed.com/mattresses/tempur-pedic/
      Or, given the challenges you've had so far, perhaps you want to play it safe and go with an online brand with a slightly better return policy whose products tend to be among the most similar to Tempur-Pedic's. In that case, I'd suggest taking a look at Novosbed:
      www.goodbed.com/mattresses/novosbed/
      I hope that's helpful.

    Great review, I have an original purple and would love to upgrade but the pricing is outrageous compared to other custom mattresses. After tax on the purple I can buy three helix mattresses that are custom tailored and have pocketed coils.

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  6 лет назад +3

      Hi there -- Thanks for your comment and your kind words. As discussed in the video, we certainly agree that the price premium for the new Purple mattresses is significant. That said, the principal defense of this is that they truly do offer characteristics that you can't get from any other brand. Of course, whether those characteristics are worth the price premium is going to depend on what you can afford and how good a match they are for your personal needs and preferences.
      In terms of Helix, I just want to clarify that Helix mattresses don't actually have pocketed coils -- they have micro-coils, which is very different. Pocketed coils are a method of providing the underlying support in the mattress. In this regard, Helix mattresses use a polyurethane foam core rather than coils (just as the original Purple does). Micro-coils, on the other hand, are a method of adding a bounce and conformance to the comfort layers of the mattress. Micro-coils are 1-2" tall and a small child can easily squeeze them between their thumb and forefinger -- so from a support perspective, they are not doing any of the "heavy lifting" so to speak.
      As for the custom tailoring of a Helix, this is indeed a cool feature from a shopping perspective -- and to the extent it helps you end up with a mattress that meets your personal needs and preferences, we think it's fantastic. That said, when comparing them to other brands, just keep in mind that the range of feels and characteristics they can offer is of course limited by the range of materials they use, which does not include either of the principal materials used in the Purple 2/3/4 mattresses (pocketed coils and "hyper-elastic polymer"). So even though Helix mattresses are custom-tailored to a degree, no Helix mattress would offer the same characteristics that we described in this video.
      I hope that helps.

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, we tested the queen size Purple.4 bed, which had a 3" foam edge support. The hyper-elastic gel would not make a very supportive edge, so that foam helps to provide a much more solid edge. It's certainly possible that the king size version has a wider edge support, though 6" sounds wider than I would have expected.

    Purple doesn't make the adjustable base, it is a Reverie that they brand as their own.

    • @goodbed

      Hi there -- Thanks for your comment. Just to clarify, the base shown in this video is not the one that Purple sells. This review is only of the mattress (not the base), which is why we do not discuss the functionality or performance of the base at all -- only how the mattress performs when used on any adjustable base.
      In terms of your comment about who makes Purple's adjustable base, you are correct that there are only a small handful of companies that actually make adjustable bases (even Tempur-Pedic does not make its own adjustable bases). FWIW, Reverie is among the largest, along with Leggett & Platt.

      Hi RJ. Thanks for the question. Did you know that we have written pages on both of those models with detailed ratings for support and pressure relief?
      Here's the page for the original Purple: www.goodbed.com/reviews/purple-mattress-review/
      And here's the Purple 4 (now called Hybrid Premier): www.goodbed.com/reviews/purple-4-mattress-review/
      Take a look at both of those and you can see how they align with your needs. We thought the Purple 4 would be a great choice for side sleepers -- but for a lighter person like you, the difference between the 4 and the original might not justify the large jump in price.

    Hello, First off, this is a fantastic review!! the best one I've seen on RUclips! I have a question for you and I hope you can help me... My husband and I have the purple 2 right now and my husband likes it but it is way too firm for me! I am a strict side sleeper and my hip is sore when I wake up. My husband changes positions all night and so he wants something that he can move around easily on. We had a soft Tulo memory foam mattress before the purple 2 that he hated and made his back hurt because when he would raise up to change positions at night he would feel stuck and end up pulling his neck and back from the extra effort to move!
    I want to get the purple 4 for extra cushion for my hip but I'm wondering if the purple 4 would be too soft and hard to change positions for my husband. He is 190 lbs, 6'2, and I'm 130 lbs, 5'4. Also we have our bed on an incline for my husband's acid reflux issues, so I'm wondering if that would make the purple bed feel firmer than if it was flat. So taking both of our needs into consideration do you think the Purple 4 would work for us? Or should we get the Purple 3? Sorry for the long comment! Thank you for any suggestion you can offer!

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Christina -- Thanks for your question (and your kind words). In terms of the repositioning, I do not think that is going to be an issue on the Purple 4 (or 3). We discuss and show this in more detail in the section that starts at 25:43.
      In terms of the incline question, this is a great and intriguing question and TBH I don't really know the answer to it. On basically any other mattress I would say the difference would be inconsequential, but with the design of Purple's grid being based on *vertical* columns, I am not 100% sure how an incline would impact the feel, esp on the taller columns of the Purple 4. My guess would be that on the margin, this would make the columns more prone to collapsing (eg, let's say they normally collapse at 20 lb/sq ft of pressure, then at a 5-10 degree incline, maybe they would collapse at 18 lb/sq ft of pressure, or something like that). Overall, I would think the impact of the incline would be more pronounced on the Purple 4 than on the Purple 2, but still pretty subtle (and maybe not even perceptible at all). But all of that that is just a directional guess that is based mainly on what I remember from my engineering classes in college. 🙂
      Overall, I don't see any reason why the Purple 4 would not be a good fit for you and your husband, and I do think it would offer the most pressure relief for your side sleeping needs. At your weight, it's possible that the the Purple 3 would also have enough of this for you, but it's hard to say for sure.
      I hope that's helpful.

    • @christinagracebeauty
      @christinagracebeauty 5 лет назад

      Yes that was extremely helpful! Thank you for your thoughtful response!
      I forgot to mention before that we also have a dust mite allergy cover on our mattress and it's not stretchy so I think that also makes the bed more firm. We can tell a big difference in softness from just lying on the purple 2 mattress with nothing on it, and when we have the cover, and fitted sheet on it. We do have the purple sheets which are better than using a non stretchy sheet. Just thought I'd throw that in there! :) Thank you again!

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Christina -- Aha, yes that can certainly make a difference. It's still not altogether surprising that a side sleeper like you might find the Purple 2 to be a bit too firm, but there's no question that a cover that doesn't stretch will inhibit your ability to benefit from the conforming and pressure-relieving features of a mattress like this. Smart of you to notice this!

    Hey Mike, loving the videos! You're an excellent reviewer. For myself I'm stuck between buying a Brentwood Home Oceano vs a Saatva. The oceano is softer than the Cedar. Id like to think the memory foam than latex over coils is the best of both worlds. Any thoughts? I've had horrible experiences at retail stores. I'm a side/stomach sleeper. With wide shoulders, 5'9 at 190. I'm leaning towards the Oceano.

      Thanks Nathan! I'm very glad that the videos have been helpful for you. In terms of the Oceano, I'm afraid we haven't yet done an in-depth review of that mattress, so I can't speak to its characteristics in as much detail as the ones that we have reviewed. FWIW, if the combination of latex and memory foam is what you're after, here are a few options that we have reviewed and which feature either that exact combination or something that will have very similar characteristics (listed in order of how relevant they sound to the other criteria you provided):

    Hello Michael.. I was just wondering if you ever use the purple pillow ???

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  4 года назад +1

      Hi Gary -- Thanks for your question. I have tested it, if that's what you mean. I found it to have a very unusual feel but one that personally I quite liked, but preferred for back sleeping to side sleeping. As pillows go, it was definitely colder than most but its most exceptional characteristic was its weight -- IIRC it weighs about 10 lbs. And because it's also pretty floppy you should definitely not expect to be able to easily move this thing around in your sleep the way you might do with a normal pillow.
      I also found it to have more of an initial off-gassing smell than the mattress (which had very little). This seemed strange to me since the material is the same Purple grid material that's in the top of the mattress. So it's possible this was an anomaly or something that they've subsequently fixed.
      I hope that's helpful.

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  4 года назад

      Hi Jake. You're talking about what we call a 'body impression' and no, it's not common for it to be noticeable after just a couple of months. First thing to check is your foundation -- if you are using an old box spring, or have it on a standard four-sided metal frame, you likely need a more supportive foundation -- today's mattresses are much heavier than the old innerspring type. You need a platform bed, a box-style foundation with closely spaced slats, or a metal frame that includes a center support and fifth leg in the middle. The Purple website will also have a list of appropriate foundations.
      If you think your foundation is adequate, and you are still noticing body impressions, then I'd contact Purple for sure. Once you are past the trial period, you'll be in the warranty period, where body impressions are covered if they are deeper than 1" (measured when no one is on the bed).
      Hope that's helpful!

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  6 лет назад +3

      Hi there -- Thanks for your question. We'll be posting more details at some point on our experience with that pillow and who we think it's a good fit for. In the meantime, what I can say off-hand is that much like Purple's mattresses, it's a very unique experience, unlike any other pillow I've tried -- something you'll recognize from the first time you try to pick it up (it is 10 lbs and very floppy). Your head definitely gets that same floaty, but stable, sensation that your body gets on the Purple 4. As a back sleeper using it on the Purple 4, I really liked it. The biggest caveat is be prepared to let it air out for at least a week before using it -- the initial smell was very strong, at least on the one we got (unlike the mattresses, which we had no problem using right away). I hope that's helpful.

    5’8” 165. I’ve been sleeping on the 3 for about the past few months. I’m considering switching to the 4. I constantly feel like I need more cushioning and have had some back pain, I spend a lot of time in the zero gravity position throughout the day and sometimes through the night and wonder if that’s contributing to my back pain? But the 3 also just feels kinda flat, I feel a little supported but feel like it gets kinda hard feeling and could be so much nicer with a little more cushion. I spend a lot of time in the bed watching TV and day or sleep i switch around positions often. Does it sound like I would like the 4 better?
    I feel like it might alleviate some of my back pain better. But you mention how the 4’s extra grid might not support as well as the 3?
    I tried a 4 in store and it definitely felt slightly softer and I think less pressure, not a huge difference from the 3, but where you can feel the floaty sensation on the 4 it feels pressure free. I dont feel that from the 3, the 3 feels like you’ve sank to a stiffer flat bottom. Honestly the 2 and 3 hardly even feel that much different from other beds I feel like only the 4 do you really feel the purple grid and something unique from other beds. But I would love your opinion.
    I think the 4 is what I was hoping the 3 was going to be but I’m worried if I switch maybe the 3 was actually better for my spine all along and the different positions I move around in.
    Also something I experienced that I don’t hear talked about much when i compared the 4 and 3, there seems to be a comforting woosh of air when you move around on the 4 that I’ve never felt from the 3. I thought that was really nice and felt extra cooling.

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  4 года назад

      Hi Victor. A few thoughts reading your comment.... For a guy of your weight, from a spinal alignment/support perspective, there's probably not going to be much difference between the 3 and 4. That's because you're not heavy enough to really utilize all four inches of the hyperelastic grid. From a pressure relief standpoint, however, we do think the pressure relief will be a notch better, and it's going to feel more cushioned to you than the 3. As for sleeping positions, both should be good for back and side sleeping -- we wouldn't recommend either for those who sleep predominantly on their stomachs, but they may be fine for those who just find themselves in that position occasionally.
      Something else that jumped out -- have you thought about an adjustable base? People who spend a lot of time in bed watching TV often prefer an adjustable base as it allows the to raise the head/foot to a more comfortable position. And when you was the bed feels "flat" an adjustable base would allow to create some custom settings, including a zero gravity position. Something to think about...
      Hope that's helpful!

    I’m 5’11, 240 lbs so I’m a little heavier than most mattress reviewers. Predominantly a back/stomach sleeper because my broad shoulders make side sleeping difficult. I’m looking for a great long-term mattress for my senior year of college and beyond. Last year I got a Leesa at home and I love it. But since I’m looking for a mattress that will last me a while I think a hybrid would be best. Between a Purple 2, Sapira, or Bear Hybrid, which do you recommend?

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Alexander -- Thanks for your question. Based on your comments, it sounds like you would like something that has a similar feel to the Leesa, but is a bit more solid and durable. If so, of the ones you listed, I think the Sapira would be the best option in your case. It shares Leesa's use of a latex-like material on top with memory foam below, so will have a similar overall feel in that sense. It has a bit less softness (we classified the Sapira as a Medium-Firm and the Leesa as a Medium), which I would tend to think would be good for a back-stomach sleeper, as well as someone over 200 lbs. And relative to the Leesa, the Sapira uses a bit higher-quality materials, substituting the foam core for firm pocketed coils and adding a couple rows of even thicker coils around the perimeter for edge support. Given the lack of 'weak links' in its construction, we felt it would be a particularly good match for folks in your weight range. You can see our full in-depth review of the Sapira here:
      www.goodbed.com/mattresses/sapira/
      In terms of the Purple 2 and the Bear Hybrid, it's entirely possible that these could work for you as well, and if I knew more about your complete set of needs and preferences, I could assess that. However, either way, I do think they would both have less in common with the specific feel that you've enjoyed with the Leesa. Given that and the other factors you mentioned, the Sapira would be the first place I'd look in your case.
      I hope that's helpful.

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  5 лет назад +1

      Hi. First off, the Tempur-Pedic mattress is going to have a LOT of that slow, melting into the bed feel, while the Purple 4 definitely will not. Both should provide good pressure relief for side sleepers, so your choice (assuming they both meet all of your other criteria) might come down to whether you like/want that melting-into-the bed feeling you get with memory foam.
      Hope that helps!

      @@goodbed I have heard that tempurpedic can be a little too firm. Is that true?

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  5 лет назад +2

      Hi there -- While there are certainly aspects of softness that relate to the Fit of a mattress to your body shape, weight, and sleep position, for the most part softness is what we call a "preference-based" characteristic -- meaning there is no objective better or worse, it's just a matter of you personal preference. Add to that the fact that the perception of softness will vary by person depending on their things like their weight, what they're used to sleeping on, etc. For these reasons, it's quite common to see one person report a mattress as "too firm" while another person reports that the same exact mattress is "too soft." It really comes down to how YOU feel on a given mattress, not how anyone else does.
      All that said, it is certainly true that what Tempur-Pedic calls "Soft" is not what we call "Soft" when we put their models onto our universal softness spectrum. In fact, as you will see in our overview of the Breeze collection, we classify their Luxe-Breeze Soft model as a "Firm" on our softness spectrum. This is a good example of why we recommend that you always be sure to watch our review of a given mattress before buying it to avoid any surprises on this and other fronts.
      I hope that's helpful.

    So would a purple mattress not be good for kids who weight less than 100lbs? I was thinking of getting twin beds for my kids but they might find it too firm?

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  4 года назад

      Hi there -- Thanks for your question. Kids tend to have different body shapes than adults -- eg, they tend to have few, if any, curves -- so the weight-based spinal alignment ratings would not necessarily apply to kids. It is true that because they are so light, a mattress that feels soft to a heavier adult may feel firm to a kid, so in that sense their experience would be similar to a very lightweight adult. However, because of their relative their lack of curves, I rarely worry about a mattress being too firm for a kid. So I personally wouldn't consider the softness level of this mattress to be a negative in considering this mattress for a kid.
      I hope that's helpful.

      Hi Amanda -- Thanks for your question. You are smart to be asking this, since weight differences are certainly a factor that can cause one person person to experience the same mattress very differently than another person. We did not have anyone in the 300+ weight range available to us as part of our testing, but in all of our reviews we do try to use our experience (as well as the vast amount of feedback from real mattress owners that we receive through our website) to specifically discuss how we would expect any given mattress to work for people of different weights.
      In this video, you can see us discuss that in some detail in the Back Support & Pressure Relief section (10:03) in particular, as well as in any other sections in the video where we felt that differences would be significant. I hope that's helpful for you.

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  3 года назад

      Hi and thanks for the question. If sleeping hot is an issue, we do think the Purple would be a good choice. We do think that pressure relief can be a different experience depending on body weight -- people that are very light might not collapse the gel columns enough to get the pressure relief they need.
      However, some side sleepers really prefer a bed with less cushioning depth -- but still need pressure relief. So you might fit into that sub-group of people that want something firmer but still need pressure relief. So even though your match score is lower for the Purple 3, it might be just fine for you.
      You might want to have a look at our written report for that mattress, which includes a breakdown of our ratings based on body size/shape -- could give you a big more insight.

    • @goodbed

      Hi Mr. E. Adding your Chilipad on the Purple Premier will likely change the cushioning depth (how much you sink in), but the pressure relieving properties of the gel grid should still be there. So if NOT sinking in is what you want, I think the Chilipad might enhance the 'floating' effect of the foam.

If I understand your question correctly, if you run your hand over the top of the mattress, you *can* feel the ridges of the grid a little bit (particularly if you know to be feeling for it). But in terms of your body laying on the mattress, I didn't perceive the gridlines at all, either consciously or subconsciously, and I really doubt anyone would.
      I hope that's helpful.

      Hi there -- Thanks for your question. We can certainly help you with this. The best place to start is to take the mattress match quiz on our website, which is designed for exactly this purpose. It works by asking you all of the relevant questions to fully assess your requirements (including some factors that might actually be important to you but that you would not have otherwise thought to consider), and then using an intelligent matching algorithm to search across all brands and stores (both online and in your local stores) to find ones that match your unique needs and preferences. If you haven't already done so, you can take that quiz here:

    Does the grid material soften up? The purple 4 feels wonderful but after sleeping the first night on purple4 and found it too firm. I appreciate any technical information.

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  5 лет назад +2

      Hi Linda -- Thanks for your question. No, I would actually not expect the grid material to soften up over time. Unlike foam, which can have a bit of a break-in effect, the hyper-elastic polymer is an extremely resilient material, as are the pocketed coils underneath. So I would expect the feel of the Purple 4 to remain very consistent.
      That said, one thing that *will* very likely change is how your body reacts to that feel. Any time you get a new mattress, it can take anywhere from a few days to a few months for your body to fully adjust to that new feel. The more different it is from what you're used to, the longer this can take. And since the Purple is unlikely to be similar to anything you've had before, I do think that could add to the adjustment period. This is one reason why companies like Purple offer up to 100 nights or more for you to try the product. So for the time being, my recommendation would be to just give yourself some time to enjoy and adjust to the new feel.
      I hope that's helpful.

      @@goodbed Thank you for thoughtful response. As I think back to why I bought this mattress is because of the egg and pressure-point tests videos. The thing is, they were done on the grid material without the mattress over. I think covering the grid changes some of it's pressure point relief qualities. The cover itself creates a solid surface. Could you do test with pressure mat comparing grid vs grid w/cover? That would be informative. Thanks.

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Linda -- We actually did do our own egg test to see whether the manufacturer's results could be independently verified, and we did our test with the cover on. We included it in our full review above, but you can also find it as its own video here:
      ruclips.net/video/H6tX-26FRQ4/видео.html
      I would agree with your hypothesis that on the margin, any unquilted cover is likely to have less pressure-relieving qualities than what's directly underneath it. That said, given the rather stretchy characteristics of this particular cover, I wouldn't expect it to appreciably diminish the pressure-relieving capabilities. IMHO, it would be much more likely that a mattress protector or set of sheets would have this effect, since those are less likely to be as stretchy as the cover on this mattress.
      In general, I don't see much value in doing any tests without the cover, since the cover is a necessary component of the mattress. That's why all of our pressure relief assessments were done with the cover on.
      I hope that's helpful.

      One more question. Which is softer for side sleeper, original or 4?

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  5 лет назад +2

      Our pleasure Linda. 😊
      Re: your most recent question, I think this will depend on the sleeper, since there is a difference not only in the height of the top grid but also the softness of what's underneath it. A side sleeper who is heavy enough could fully buckle the top layer on either model, in which case the Original Purple would feel softer to them (since the middle foam layer on the Original Purple is much softer than the coils on the Purple 4). By contrast, a very light side sleeper might not experience that much of what is beneath the grid, and therefore could feel that the Original Purple is firmer, because there is less flex in its top grid. For people in the middle, I think these two factors will tend to balance out fairly evenly, which is why we classified both models as a "Medium" on our softness spectrum:

      Optic Blast Just got my Purple 3 King today (6/25/19) and it arrived wrapped in a bag. I wasn’t sure how it would be delivered since I’ve seen videos showing it fully expanded in a box on delivery. Glad it was shrink wrapped since it gives me more assurance it’s never used and brand new. Denver Mattress carries theses and honored the 10% off July 4th sale, plus they threw in Purple sheets, free delivery/setup and haul away of old mattress. Also, Denver Mattress gives 120-day trial period, not 100. The store also allowed 75% credit toward exchange for any of their mattresses in months 5-8, and 50% credit in months 9-12. All in all, buying from Denver Mattress is a better deal and the Purple arrived and is in our bedroom four days after ordering it at the store. Can’t beat that!

      Hi +vacationboyvideos -- Thanks for your question. It's hard to say for sure since your idea of firmness and sinking in may be different than how we think of it. That said, based on the information you provided, I do think the 3 sounds like a good choice in your case.
      I also think that having watched this video and seen how it responds to my body, you probably have a decent sense of how the Purple 4 would respond to your body. And if it seemed like you'd want something a tad firmer with a bit less sink, I definitely think that is what you will get from the Purple 3.
      I hope that helps.

      But the Casper was to farm even though people say it's not that firm.
      And lastly the nectar just felt really odd. (I guess I just don't like memory foam I guess I just don't like memory foam)
      I think it's either the purple or helex.... But I do tend to like innerspring as well as latex... I just don't know if a good mattress company that has latex with a good return policy latex with a good return policy? I had an old IKEA mattress I was latex and it was amazing!

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  6 лет назад +2

      Hi +vacationboyvideos -- If you decide against the Purple 3, there are actually some latex options with a good return policy. I would suggest using this handy tool which searches across all of the available online options.
      www.goodbed.com/mattress-models/online/
      Note the More Filters button, which will allow you to filter this list by mattresses that use latex as well as ones with a Return Policy, among other criteria. You can also click on each return policy to see the key details, including any return or exchange fees.
      Also, just as an FYI, if you are looking for something that has either an innerspring unit or latex, then I don't think Helix is an ideal choice in your case since it has neither of these. Micro-coils definitely should not be confused with "innerspring" -- they can certainly add comfort and conformance to a mattress, but they do not give the mattress anything resembling the overall bounce and support characteristics of an "innerspring" mattress.
      I hope that's helpful.

I bought a beautyrest mattress back in 2015 and it has sunk in the middle. I feel very bad pressure points on my left hip and lumbar. I've tried multiple mattress toppers and it seems they're just a waste of money (i've returned 2 so far, the 3rd one is looking like it will be too). What should I do? How does it affect people with curved spins

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  2 года назад

      Hi Patricia -- Thanks for your question. Curved spines are one of the trickiest and most personal considerations when shopping for a mattress. As with anyone, the goal of someone with a curved spine is still to find a mattress that holds their spine in a "neutral" position when sleeping. This generally means that your spine should have the same shape that it does when you are standing. But when a person's spine is curved in a non-standard way, this opens an array of possibilities as to what its neutral shape looks like. As such, our standard assessments about a person of a certain weight, body shape, and preferred sleep position may not apply.
      In light of all this, I'd highly recommend trying out mattresses in person with someone who can help you assess whether it is able to hold your spine in a proper neutral shape when you are in your preferred sleep position(s).
      I'm sorry I can't be of more help on this one, but I hope that's at least somewhat helpful nonetheless.

    So I bought a original purple matte over a year ago. It helped some but not so much for my neck (piling pillows under me). So I recently got a sleep number with adjustable base. I’m figuring out that it’s really not that great on some of my pressure points. So that mattress is returnable but the base is not. I’m wondering if my purple mattress will work on the adjustable base? I have a sleigh bed frame around the base but with the sleep number it has a type of anchor that goes under the foam through the cover to attach it to the base. How would the purple stay on the base or will it need to be anchored since I do have the bed frame.

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  6 лет назад +1

      Hi +teletruda -- Thanks for your question. I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the particular feature that you mentioned, but it sounds like something that is designed to fasten the mattress to the base. I would presume that the purpose of this would either be to keep the mattress from sliding on the base or to keep the mattress from sticking up (eg, in the foot area) when the base is fully elevated. If so, while this sounds like a 'nice to have' feature, and perhaps is particularly important when using a Sleep Number mattress on an adjustable base, it should not really be needed for most mattresses -- provided your base has either corner guards or a retainer bar. One or the other of those is generally a standard feature on any adjustable base, though I am not intimately familiar with the Sleep Number bases so can't speak to their features in as much detail as I can with other popular adjustable bases.
      FYI, in our in-depth review of the Original Purple mattress, we tested that mattress on an adjustable base without any anchors or the like. You can see that here:
      ruclips.net/video/rjXViaBCEoA/видео.htmlm45s
      I hope that's helpful.

      GoodBed thank you for getting back to me. So yes the sleep number base has anchors kind of in the middle. It doesn’t have what you are talking about at the foot of the bed base. With that said it is currently inside of a sleigh bed frame...so would you think I don’t need anything extra to keep the mattress on the base? I saw in one review of the original that they had nothing surrounding the mattress on an adjustable base and it stayed in place very well.
      Also, I am a side sleeper mostly, 5’6 and currently 205 (but I’m still losing weight...that’s down from 230). I do typically feel I need a firmer mattress bc of support but I also have pressure points that hurt at times. From your research and what you’ve said in your video, I’m thinking the purple 3 might be good for my body Statur even as I continue to lose weight. Your thoughts?

    • @goodbed
      @goodbed  6 лет назад

      Hi +teletruda -- In terms of keeping the mattress on the base, the sleigh will certainly help keep it in place when the mattress is in a flat position. However, the situation in which you generally need to worry about sliding is when the mattress is going up and down repeatedly (it will tend to slide head to foot), and I'm afraid the sleigh won't help you much with that. This is true no matter which mattress you use by the way. Re: the review you saw, I'm having a hard time visualizing what you would have seen because I have never seen an adjustable base that doesn't have some built-in solution to hold the mattress in place when the base is raised and lowered.
      In terms of which Purple is the best match for you, based on the information you provided, I would agree that either the 3 or the 4 sound best in your case. In general, the 4 has the greater ability to accommodate larger curves. So if you were to remain at your current weight for example, then perhaps the 4 would be best. But if you were to lose another 25 pounds for example, then you might be more indifferent between them.
      I hope that's helpful.
