This is a rare demonstration held at the Self-Defense Ministry in Tokyo's Akasaka circa 1957. This section is the performance of Koichi Tohei. The film was part of André Nocquet's private 8 mm collection. Nocquet was the very first foreign live-in student of the founder of Aikido Morihei Ueshiba. He spent 3 years living with the Ueshiba family from 1955 to 1957 and trained daily at the Kobukan Dojo. Read Nocquet's full biography: www.guillaumeer...

Had the pleasure of attending one of his demonstrations in Santa Monica, Ca back in the early seventies. Remarkable man. His spirit transcended the physical. I actually got called on by him to teach the audience unbendable arm technique he used to demonstrate Ki. An experience that changed me for l life.

Koichi Tohei Sensei the only Aikidoka who was ever awarded with the rank of 10th Dan while still alive. By the way, there are only two 10th Dan in Aikido 1) Koichi Tohei & 2) Hikitsuhci Mitsio - Post Mortem Award. He is a Black Belt in Judo before he shifted to Aikido.

Hikitsuchi was also one of the only students to practice with O'sensei at the age of 17

Its not that simple. The modern grading system was invented by judo and adopted by other budo including Aikido.
OSensei never did hand graduations such as kyu or dan during his teachings. At old age he often joked about the dan system and jokingly gave dans to many of his students, like if handing out cookies to children. I dont know about the others but the ten dan of Hikitsuchi was also casually given by OSensei and is NOT recognised by the Aikikai. (because they know there are much more ppl out there who were "awarded" with a dan rather whimsecally by OSensei, but most students knew it was in jest or didnt take it serious.)
Anyway, people all getting choked up and using the dan rank as a measurement of whatever, its not what aikido is about. Nowadays just about everybody is a high ranking shihan and thinking they have reached something. its not.
anyway, Koichi a tenth dan, so what. the guy got bored with Aikido and stopped doing it, what a great example....

Main thing that can be taught from Tohei about technic is that the first thing you should learn is base (four principals), if you don't have it, learning technics is waste of time when about aikido.

This was filmed at 'Steven Segal's' house by 'Bruce Lee' who was also there with 'Tohei' as they would come over to 'Segal's' backyard as often as they could to learn from him various styles of killing. 'Seagal' would push them but, not as hard as he could go otherwise they'd have injured themselves just doing 'Segal's' personal warm up. Afterwards 'Segal' would take them both to an eat all you can diner and let their sons play with his son in the ball park area.

I'd bet their isn't one fat shaming commenter on here that could take him in a fight. Using Aikido for real on someone that doesn't understand how to move with it to not get hurt results in dislocated joints and snapped bones. Most just don't get it.

its a 10th dan. The only one ever awarded by the founder. every subsequent 10th dan has been awarded after the founders death, by Kisshomaru.

"there isn't even a 10th dan, it is 9th dan and its called kudan!"
Yes, 9th degree is called kudan; but 10th degree is called judan, and there most certainly is such a thing in many systems. (Heck, Bujinkan goes up to jugodan (15th degree).)

Jiyukan -- Actually it is you who is making a fool of himself by not reading posts correctly. I already said there are 10th dans; my teacher's teacher was one of them. I clearly wrote "...10th degree is called judan, and there most certainly is such a thing in many systems."
Furthermore, both kyu and ku are accepted pronunciations for 9. Use YOUR damned Google skills to check for on and kun readings, etc.
