Very informative. Very true. I adopted a 3 yr old neutered male that had minimal training in first 3 years. He was a HANDFUL!!! He had an extensive bite history. I was bitten by him often in the beginning. And he barked a lot and very sharp bark. Between the time he came into my life & his leaving (unexpectedly hit by vehicle) he was getting better and better. Less negative behaviour, more snuggles & so much love!!! His death was sudden and I’m still grieving deeply. Run free Toby. He was 5.5 at death.

I'd say also be prepared for the possibility that the terv may not be what you expected and you may need to earn their affection. On top of all the usual terv traits I wanted a dog that cuddled. However initially he treated me differently than everyone else since I was the person that worked and was away the most, he growled and tried to bite whenever I picked him up or give him a kiss on the forehead. He also had food aggression mostly towards me. It took a lot of training and a long time for him to warm up to me.
Another thing about having a belgian terv or any dog for that matter is safety must be taken seriously at all times. My dog fractured his femur and sprained his wrist from falling out of a moving vehicle. He went out of the window from stepping on the window switch the one time I forgot to put the child lock on. After surgery, he was supposed to be on crate rest, but I didn't have the heart to keep a 8-month puppy in the crate for 23hr40min a day, he had chances to jump around. He ended up breaking the plate that was holding the broken femur, which I had no idea was even a possibility, and the vet had suggested an amputation. I pushed for another surgery to repair the bone, but because this time there is less bone surface to work with, there is still a small chance of an amputation. Luckily the surgery was successfully. The crate rest was taken a lot more seriously this second time. As frustrated as he was to be in the crate for 8 weeks, he healed completely after that. He is able run and jump again.
In addition, early on socialization, meaning from the moment you get the dog, is crucial for this breed. Because of covid and the advice that he should not interact with other dogs prior to his vaccination, he spent a lot of time only seeing the family in the first few months. By the time we took him to his puppy class, he was no longer used to meeting new people and growled at anyone who tried to approach, the instructors had no idea how to deal with him. We then went to someone who had experience with this breed, and were able to make a lot of progress. But unfortunately it was mostly lost when the injury hit. To this day, he is not able to walk through an area with a crowd without being super protective, and I must shorten his leash whenever a biker or large male approached, otherwise I can't guarantee that he won't lunge at them and bare his teeth. We get a lot of people who would stop and complement him on his beautiful appearance which is never well received by him, as everyone looks like a suspect to him. Luckily we live in a low density area, there is no way I could manage if I were to move into an apartment with him at this point.
As for the personality of my belgian terv, I think he is strong opinionated, highly cautious of all new objects/experiences, fiercely loyal, never takes s*** from anyone, he is smart in the sense that he's good at reading when he's pushed the boundaries too far and knowing when to behave himself, he leaves you alone when you are busy and comes for cuddling the second he sees that you are done working. It does take a lot of work to get to a place where you can comfortably coexist.

These dogs are, as the video explains in helpful, articulate wording, 24/7. That's TWENTY FOUR SEVEN! No if's, buts or maybes.
That is teh commitment and dedication they demand. Yes, these dogs will tell you what they want! They are incredibe communicators.
They will return your inputs and investments in them, one hundred fold. You will learn to adore them, love them, like a son or a daughter...only, unlike the son and daughter they won't give you any grief. The most amazing companion you could ever hope for.

It's the same with the groenendael, Malinois (if you get a pure breed and Laekenois. They are all insanely smart, great commmunicators and the best friend you can imagine. But people should also realise that they take lots of your time and mental stimulation is something those breeds really need.

The ending hit home for me! I did my research but I taught myself everything I know about training in order to prepare and had to learn along the way because I was never in a spot long enough to get him professionally trained. Five years later I have a baby and they love each other and he’s been patient with us both. They are the silliest and sweetest and give the best cuddles and hugs I think because they really get into it. I love them so much but I don’t think I’m getting another. I have a 2 year old male Malinois...you're so right about them needing to burn off their energy. I'm recently retired from teaching with a large backyard. He loves to play fetch for about 15 minutes then go for a long walk. I do that twice a day in the morning and later in the day. He also plays in the yard and trains there as well. He would much rather play than eat...in fact he loves to play while he eats.

La pastora aprendió todo muy rapidamente , y copia algunas cosas de su hermana .

I´m not thinking of getting a dog at the moment, I´ve watched the vídeo only out of curiosity. I just wanted to say that in my opinion, the answer to the first question should be yes from anyone who is thinking of getting a dog. My dog is a cute 13 years old mongrel of only 9 kilos and I spend 3 to 4 hours walking her around per day, plus the time at home. On the contrary of your dog, mine doesn't enjoy going out in bad weather, and if I can´t take her for long walks for a few days maybe because I´m sick, she will be fine and won´t mess around in the house, but not because she doesn´t complain means she doesn´t need it. I think any dog deserves at least 2 hours of walk per day.
I enjoy your vídeos very much! :)

I guess the bottom line is still that you can never learn enough to compare to the experience of having one. And like with babies, you grow to the task or you were not made for it. You can be concerned if you can do it and commit to it only so much. In the end it's trial by fire and you'll learn if you can meet the challenge. Some people will never show that they're capable of it until they have a real requirement and then they just excel at it. Yes, I'm terrified if I was active and dedicated enough and will have time for the next 15 years. But truth be told you'll never know before hand for certain, life can be unexpected even if you thought you are ready. On the other hand being concerned before hand is probably a good sign of importance and dedication to good care.

    Warning: Very long comment coming.
1- Great video, as always!! Very informative and the clips of Rancho are so cute. I only thought it was difficult to read the questions with that backgroung, I wold recommend putting a solid white or something else.
2- Update on my "should I get a belgian" thing.
The answer is no. I realised a few things, first of all, exercise might not be my problem, but actually mental stimulation and training. As I said in other comments, I don't have experience with training dogs at all and having such a demanding dog is not very ideal. But, I still love the breed and I'm eager to learn so the answer for the fist question might be "not for now". I am not ready and will not take on such responsability without having the proper knowledge. And some news: I adopted a dog! I kinda wanted an adult dog but ended up being convinced to get a puppy. She is really small, she could fit on my hand when she came home and I'm having a bit of a hard time with training. Theory: I have some learning difficulties and I find it troublesome to "translate" a knowledge from one situation to another. I might know exactly how to train Zak George's dog, in his house, with his things, but bringing it to my situation is a bit hard. Theory number 2: I got myself ready for a big dog, following the same line of the other one, but it's that I don't know how to handle a dog this size and with these needs. But anyway, I'm very happy with my little doggie, it's been interesting and it gave me a lot of knowledge I didn't have. For curiosity's sake, her name is Chihiro, from Spirited Away, she's around three months old and weights 2kg. Pretty hyper for her size, I can't wait for when she has all of the vaccines and will be able to run around. She has short black fur, her head kinda resembles a chihuahua, but with labrador-like ears. She has a bit of a pit bull looking stop and face, but is not even half of the size of those haha. To wrap things up, I talked to a breeder back in december and they might have new puppies in march this year, so I'll be talking to them and hopefully getting some advice, but now is definitly not the time to bring one of these little beasts home. Anyway, thanks for all the information you and Rancho have been providing me with, I'm very thankful that it helped me make the right decision. Thank you! Give Rancho some cuddles for me!

Belgians are a constant going concern.
If you are not VERY well prepared, remember you will likely be the second smartest person in the room - and you won't like it.
I knew people who had a pair of them - wonderful dogs.

This video makes it seem like having a Belgian Shepherd is a full time job and nothing but hard work. They're bred to protect sheep. How much training, exercise and mental exercise do you think a flock of sheep provide?

Cani fantastici, equilibrati, sani, forti e affidabili.

Do you think any of the bsd’s make good first time dogs? I grew up with smaller dogs, but I’ve always been interested in having a larger dog that I can run/bike/hike with (for example) in a few years or so (my first dog of my own, not a family dog). I particularly like the bsd because they are leaner/smaller than the gsd. Thoughts?

I dont mind dog hair but how is it that some dogs can shed of more hair than on their entire bodies, if Cruella devil wanted a belgian shepherd coat she could have just went to a dog groomer and have enough for a dog fur onsie

I got my Tervuren as a rescue at 2.5 months old. Had one dog before, a Saint Bernard. Nothing alike. This dog is mean. I have to walk him with a muzzle. He wants to kill any animal he sees. It’s quite embarrassing. He looks exactly like the dog in the video, long hair, super cute, till he sees a dog, cat, squirrel, you name it. And he doesn’t like men. Had three trainers, for months. He never changed or got better. I can’t even take him to the vet, he will try to kill all the dogs there. Super embarrassing. He’s now 7 years old. I wish he was nice.

So sorry for you…also sorry that you were duped as it is well known by dog experts how these dogs can turn out without that initial birth-to-4 months training. Couple inadequate early training with a fearful animal and this is what happens! I was so afraid of ANY Shepard that I did a year of reading and only bought a Tervuren from someone who knew the dispositions of each parent and I still had a “moment” or two with him. I hope you are both hanging in, as they are the most loyal of creatures I’ve ever known and that alone is worth the extra carefulness and patience you’ll need. My boy passed early (at 12) of lymphatic cancer and I miss him greatly, pain in ass he was at times! I’d exercise the crap out of him…less energy to spare for attacks (I used a swimming pool in summers, and attached to a bike year round- “bikerdog.com” saved my life…who has 3 hours a day to walk! Much much luck to u both 🙏🏻 🙏🏻
