She didn't win a medal but she did become world number 1 because of appearing at the Olympics due to the insane ranking rules break dancing uses (despite putting on a terrible show). The problem is those who are really great at break dancing either didn't know or didn't care about the qualifiers so you basically ended up with whoever turned up. I do feel quite bad for her, being hounded day and night every single day for one performance.
Greeting from The Netherlands. About pancratryon you are correct! (but a little bit off). Once two opponents (one was indeed a Spartan), were fighting in the pancratyon event. It was a mix of wrestling and boxing. As the legend goes, both men were fighting eachother but neither could win. They both agreed to end the fight simple. First fighter A could throw a punch, then the other could throw back a punch. The last one standing would win. The toss decided that the non-Spartan was first. He delt a devastating blow to the Spartan on his head. He fell to the ground but was not knocked out. Now it was the Spartan's turn. Instead of punching his opponent in the face, he punched him in the stomach, ripping his intestants out! That did the job. The man was knocked out but also died. The referee's decided that this was unsportsmanlike and the Spartan was banned to participate ever again.😂

At least FDR tried to work against segregation in some ways. He outlawed segregation in federal buildings, even if they were in a segregated state. So when the pentagon was built in Virginia they did it with local segregation in mind, but had to switch things up after Roosevelt had visited and saw that they had segregated toilets. (This is actually another thing I learned from QI.)
That episode also mentioned some long distance running events, where one person used a car, another was chased offcourse by wild dogs and another was being doped with potentially lethal poison (like cyanide or arsenic).
As part of gymnastics, twiddling a ribbon on a stick is an event, as is prancing about with a ball, both with huge points for 'artistic interpretation', so why would breakdancing not be...
@@carolineskipper6976 Exactly! Same goes for synchronised swimming. There's actually a strong movement for 'Sport Juggling' to be included. It's a form of juggling that is all about the skill and precision required, and nothing at all to do with clowns making balloon animals as many believe. I show friends the juggling world championships, and they are 100% blown away! Much more skilful than twiddling a ribbon about and being 'perky' a la female gymnasts, who seem to get points for demonstrating their chests...
RE what you said at the end, I watched a documentary some years ago where they proved that Eva, his wife, was actually Jewish. Talk about irony, unknowingly marrying a Jewish woman just before ending it all.
22:26 Actually the (rhymes with Yahtzee) party was a blend of Left and Right. I vaguely remember the conclusion being that it leaned slightly more Left than Right, but it was more or less in the middle.

Check out the movie "Eddie the Eagle", a bio pic about the man, with Taron Egerton, Hugh Jackman and Christopher Walken, it's quite a feel good movie... Also, there is a good movie about Jesse Owens and the Berlin Olympics, called "Race", with Stephan James, Jason Sudekis, Jeremy Irons and William Hurt.
Fun fact: Hitler was part Jewish and pretty much everyone knew. I don't remember if it was one of his grandparents or greatgrand parents, but.. he is absolutely at least 10% Jewish... Also.. He was short, a bit pudgy, and had dark brown hair, while saying that he was part of the master race that was tall blonde and fit.. There are many reasons to think that Hitler was actually rather talkinga bout who he was sexually attracted to.. Strapping young blonde and blue eyed men.
No there are a couple of events that they allow people into, 50m freestyle and athletics 100m I think. There's a good clip of a Samoan discuss thrower "sprinting" 100m in 2008 or 2012
Thought she was South African. Zola Budd joined the British Olympic team and ran for Great Britain due to S.A. being banned from the Olympics due to apartheid. Shame the Olympics committee doesn’t consider genocide worthy of a ban these days (China).
They need to bring back town planning, some towns and cities are just horrible. just can't nominate cities with millions of people i.e. New York, Los Angeles, Miami, London, Paris etc.
Your pronunciation of παγκράτιον is very good. Although the exact way is "pangration" (the term the sport's federation uses) rather than "pankration" (the way it's usually found in books and encyclopedias). Not a big difference, really.
They made a movie about Eddie the Eagle. It was called... "Eddie the Eagle".
Would like a reaction to that.
It never took off.

The Australian Raygun didn't win, not even close. She was just panned for being bad, not for being bad and winning.

I was surprised when she quit, it's not like Australians to be sore losers.
Wasn't she, or her husband, reponsible for choosing who would represent Australia in the event?
He said town planning 👍🏼

Rachael Louise Gunn aka 'Ray Gun' got terrible scores at the Olympics, the controversy was about how she got picked to represent Australia.
I just feel sorry for those who have to share her last name.

Eddie was our ( UK) version of the Jamaican team that the movie Cool runnings was based on.
You should watch “Flame” by horrible histories. It’s the history of the olympics. Very good.

I think i recall that the Spartans dtopped competing in it because they banned eye gouging, and the Spartans therefore thought it was too wimpish.
Eddie the Eagle used to train at the trampoline club I went to as a kid
25:32 I think someone watched a Bill Burr special.
For Break Dancing the winner for the women was Ami Yuasa from Japan and for the men Phillip Kim from Canada
The Australian woman didn't win the breakdancing. In fact, I think they banned her from ever entering again.
