  • My eyes are not as good as they used to be and I needed to inspect the Amiga A600 board we cleaned up in the ultrasonic cleaner. So when Tomlov kindly offered to send me a digital microscope for the channel, I was keen to give it a try!
    This is a review of the unit they sent me - The Tomlov DM601. The specifications are great on paper, but is it any good? This is a real review and I take it through a process of inspecting the solder pads on the Amiga. It's not all sunshine and roses on the way and I do find some solder pad issues.
    Tomlov have also given us a time limited 10% discount code in case you're looking for one of these. Both for the 7" and 10" inchers! (oo-er!) - This is active until the 29th of May 2023 and is not an affilliate link.
    Thanks for watching!

    So. I've been using this for about a week and a half now. It's really helpful and much better than my previous digital microscope, with details being much clearer. The HDMI really is a game changer and is really comfortable to view. If I had one real criticism it's the same as I level at a lot of these products. If you have a large board you can't really get it undeneath far enough.
    I do realise this is me being picky and all the other 'scopes are the same format. In fact, this model has a much larger base than most. I think there is a market for maybe a bench mounted swivel arm? It would have to be fairly stiff though. Thoughts?

      "If you have a large board you can't really get it undeneath far enough. "
      Mate this is as far as most people get in their thoughts. Some, however, go the extra mile, build a prototype, and stick their idea on kickstarter. I mean you've got a 3d printer, right? Food for thought bud.

    • @MarkFixesStuff

      @@baxtardboy That's true. I was thinking of sticking an adapter on a decent quality Microphon boom arm though so I think an easy solution may exist. I'll investigate if there is already before I sink too much time into it.

      Modify a laser etcher frame (ie, just remove the laser unit, make a mount) to hold a scope and lights. Then you can scan up and down a board to your hearts content. By now we should be able to capture images and get AI to find faults.
      Ortur Laser Master 2 would be enough.

      What I did with my microscope is, I ditched the stand that it came with. I bought a 1/4" (tripod socket) desk mount arm and clamped it to my desk. Then I designed and 3D printed a mount that let me mount the microscope onto the desk arm. That way I can position it any which way I want, and since there is no stand to get in the way, I can fit any size of board under it.

    Guys I want to add a general comment. Not about Tomlov they have great products. On these things please note the depth. The bar holding the camera will not be deep enough for older larger boards - it will cause you headaches. Secondly don't get anything under a 10" and make sure you get 1080p. Don't think 720p is fine, there is a fine line between adjusting the zoom and actually getting the 720p so you want higher. You do want the HDMI to project onto a bigger screen. The batteries on these things do not last long and take a while to charge up. Consider investing in the correct size power cable. I say this from experience buying the cheap and nasty one Aliexpress.

    • @MarkFixesStuff
      @MarkFixesStuff  Год назад +2

      I agree about depth. I mentioned this in the pinned comment. Solid advice about resolution. No battery in this one thankfully.

    That glass piece is more about filtering of unwanted wavelengths than it is about ingress prevention :)
    Used to remove it on cameras back in the day to observe how coke was transparent in daylight (amongst other weird effects)

    • @Chriva
      @Chriva Год назад +2

      The red tint gave it away :) I believe it's mostly filtering infrared but could probably be some uv too?
      I highly recommend checking it out. It's outright absurd to observe just how little we actually see with our eyes and a modified camera is still only seeing a small sliver of the full spectrum.

    My partner bought one of these for my birthday as my main gift, being the sort of person she is, she bought it as soon as I'd mentioned it after it becoming available. When I opened it, I checked it out and all was good, in fact my delight was immeasurable... until I tried to record, it didn't. Outside its warranty and unable to return when I got it, it now resides in bits spread across various junk parts boxes collecting dust.
    No doubt if they'd sent one to me for review on my electronics channel, it would have been double inspected and more than likely fully working. I may still do a review based on my findings. Obviously won't be an unboxing vid though; that ship already sailed, but might make an interesting video as to the story behind why it is in pieces in various junk boxes. I'll see how I feel about it first though; every time I see it makes me feel highly disheartened and I would probably over-bias my video with too many negative sentiments.

    2560x1440 isn't 2K, it's 2.5K. But there's a growing trend to misidentify it as such. the number refers to the approximate number of rows. There's a lot of marketing crap and as such 1080p and 2160p which are the consumer 2K and 4K aren't quite 2K or 4K, 1920 and 3840 respectively. Would love it if you'd help fight this misconception Mark 🙂. It's just confusing and people are weirdly underselling their monitors as being lower res than they really are, all because of how the number of "k" has become such a hot marketing buzzword. You could technically market this as a 4:3 4K output since that's what 2880x2160 is.

    Interesting that this 7" version, the DM601, allows the use of both the screen and the HDMI output at the same time. The 10" version, the DM6012, only allows one or the other which is a real deal breaker. Check out Branchus Creations DM602 review to see what I mean. He doesn't show the firmware version on his so I'm wonder if it's something that can be updated. His review is a few months older than yours but it looks like the firmware on yours is from 2022-10-17.
    I sure looks like the hardware is identical except for the screen but maybe not.
