I lived in Saudi as a kid on a US military base. My dad was best friends with a contractor from Australia. He would loan us the coolest movies on Betamax, and one of them was called Toby and the Koala Bear, known in Australia as The Little Convict. This song and several others were featured heavily and made a big impact on my 3 / 4 year old mind. Ive always loved Australian history and the ties that we Americans share with them as former colonies.
light-fingered gentry: thieving folk. Dookies & Dutchesses is slang like form of dukes & duchesses (spelling creates confusion). Don't know about the other.
light fingered gentry-- pick pockets / thieves a log on our toes --leg irons { sometimes they were chained to a log instead of an iron ball.] dookies ^ dutchesses--slang -- young people who thumbed their noses at the law , poor teens not real dukes .
Hee hee... all those thieves and convicts , who only wanted a life, ..... found one here. They, the convicts, prospered here! Convicts had a better life here, thier children prospered. The mother country, they loved. I do not know why!
It's all about the story of a convict from the First Fleet that were sent to Australia from England. The song tells of a convict who bid goodbye to his home, his time on the transport ship, how he misses his love back in England, and the ultimate destination of Botany Bay. (Interestingly, Botany Bay later proved a poor choice to start the colony so it was relocated north to Cockle Bay, now Sydney harbour). It's all written in archaic English so it's a bit tricky to translate.
Does anyone here think that australia day should be changed ??? Isnt it kind of racist to celebrate the end of the peaceful years the indigenous had? We distrupted their peace by coming here. I am from australia but i hate australias history. So ridiculous
No. The whole point of the day is it celebrates Australia for being Australia. Changing it is pointless and wouldn’t change history. We can all celebrate Australia as a changed and changing country. If you don’t like Australia or its history. Then you are under no compulsion to celebrate the day and the country.
How sad is it that you can’t be proud of being Australian & that my family where convicts because being proud is being racist. So to the minority who want to change Australia Day because it’s racist to the original land owners who we already have apologised for the past this is for you 🖕I’ve always celebrated the 26th of January as Australia Day & no one can take that away from me 🇦🇺
I went thru phases where i loved the 26/1 and saw nothing wrong with it, but incan see both sides and actually went to the aboriginal ceremonies on the 26/1 the last few years. Very humbling, melancholic and welcome gatherings in the Cbd.

Can someone tell me what is the meaning of:
- all we light-fingered gentry?
- hops around with a log on our toes?
- young Dookies and Dutchesses?
light-fingered gentry: thieving folk. Dookies & Dutchesses is slang like form of dukes & duchesses (spelling creates confusion). Don't know about the other.
Ed Belt careful stealers, chains on their feet, boys and girls
light fingered gentry-- pick pockets / thieves
a log on our toes --leg irons { sometimes they were chained to a log instead of an iron ball.]
dookies ^ dutchesses--slang -- young people who thumbed their noses at the law , poor teens not real dukes .
Light fingered = stealthy thief
It's all irony about the class system and how the convicts were mainly petty thieves, not hardened criminals.
Seems to the a group called the Outlanders who are singing

Hi
What does this song mean? And what does the reference to England mean? Sry if it's very obvious, I am not an Australian

@@sebastianlodge7549 I celebrate it, but as survival day. Their peace was disrupted from the British invading.
They were not peaceful, that is a common myth. They were warlike against other tribes when neccessary.
Fuck yeah class war!

Harry Williams couldn't agree with you more. I am a proud Australian, and no one can tell me that I can't be.
It should be changed. It is sooooo racist to celebrate the beginning of the destruction of the poor indigenous.
I call it invasion day.
I went thru phases where i loved the 26/1 and saw nothing wrong with it, but incan see both sides and actually went to the aboriginal ceremonies on the 26/1 the last few years. Very humbling, melancholic and welcome gatherings in the Cbd.
