It's interesting how a show that was created in another country can be a smashing success in another. This is a great example. When it was made for American television, it only lasted thirteen weeks in daily syndication in late 1985. The problem there is that there were too many game shows on at the time trying to find stations that would air them. A number of them that aired during that time didn't last long beyond the 1985/1986 television season.

American game shows are taken way more seriously, often with huge sums of cash prizes involved. Catchphrase UK was a huge success because it was seen as light entertainment, was genuinely involving for the viewer and of course had a very charming host in the great Roy Walker.

Yes, it's really weird. Quite a lot of our favourite game shows over the decades originated in the States. Quite a few successful American versions of English sitcoms passed the other way. I think 'It's A Knockout' was originally a French show.

Can anyone give me a good reason why "thrown behind bars" was not accepted?

Doesn't matter. She got an extra £25 for it. EDIT. IT's because "Thrown" is literally behind bars. Simple as that.
