    This piano player Andy Ezrin is so under rated. He's comped and supported for eternity and only now is releasing his 1st album.

    I remember discovering NYV and this song in high school from my private singing instructor, and this song became my favorite song of all time. I would have been 16-ish.
    I’m 32 now. My musical tastes have evolved since then as I’ve discovered new genres, new bands, and new musicians. Some of the songs I liked in high school I hate now, and many of the songs I like today would have made me cringe back then.
    However, this song remains my favorite song of all time to this day, and it probably will be on the day I die.

    So unbelievably good, rhythm section included (Andy Ezrin Piano, Randy Landau Bass, Tommy Igoe drums). As a bass player this wiped me out: Around 6:20 they come back to the top, double time feel (they play it in F and not in the usual Gb). In the second half of bar 3, at around 6:30 the bass player plays up to the 9th, that is the A on the G string, and does a nice triplet descending figure ending with an enclosure to the Bb-7 on bar 4. Stunning.

    I first heard this song back in 1991, and this is the first time I've ever seen them perform it, and the only time I've ever seen Sarah Krieger. What a rare find!

    Strange confession: I listened to the album version of this recording about 100+ times checked out from the Los Angles County Library in Lakewood, California ca 1995. It was such a brilliant arrangement and performance. So glad to find it live so many years later. Darmon Meader, especially, is a genius.

      New York Voices was born in the mid-1980s at upstate New York’s Ithaca College. Peter Eldridge, an aspiring jazz pianist who came late to singing; Kim Nazarian, who dreamed of a life on Broadway; and Darmon Meader, a saxophonist and self-described “choral geek,” came together in the school’s vocal jazz ensemble. Director Dave Reilly included all three of them, as well as Caprice Fox, in an ensemble he’d been invited to bring on a tour of European jazz festivals. “It seemed to go over so well that Darmon and I decided to keep it going, try to make something happen professionally,” Eldridge recalls. “Kim and Caprice were part of that original band, and we slowly but surely made the transition to New York City in 1988.” There they met Sara Krieger, who became the fifth member of the band Reilly had named “New York Voices.”

    When I met Thelonious Monk in 1976, he had tears in his eyes because Carnegie Hall had spelled his name incorrectly as Thelonius on the program. (True story). This video should correct this. The tears of Thelonious are still with us.

    • @donroberts1420
      @donroberts1420 11 месяцев назад

      I think Monk had much greater issues to deal with than someone mis-spelling his name. Probably an honest mistake, possibly a dishonest one. This piano player Andy Ezrin is so under rated. He's comped and supported for eternity and only now is releasing his 1st album.

    Andy Ezrin is an insane pianist! What an incredible rendition of Round Midnight ! This guy is amazing but so are both Randy Landau on the Bass and Tommy Igoe on Drums: What a hell of a rythmic section: AMAZING
