Live Edge Joinery for Cabinet Doors

  • Achieve maximum visual impact by using Live Edge Joinery for natural wood slabs by eliminating a typical straight glue line that disrupts natural flow of wood's vibrant grain patterns. Live Edge Slabs joined with the process shown in this video can be use for any project from the cabinet doors shown here to tables, bar tops... pretty much anything! Since there's plenty of videos out there for making cabinet doors I don't go into that process in this video but focus on the method I use for joining 2 sequentially matched 18~20 inch wide elm slabs into one uber-wide slab which got cut into the 4 individual doors shown in the video thumbnail.
Here's that Amazon Influencer's tool list I mentioned in case you need something to make a live edge joint that you don't have and can't find it locally: www.amazon.com...
Note that purchases made through these links are the same low online cost to you but Amazon pays small ad fees to Next Level Carpentry and I really appreciate it!
Don't forget the exclusive 15% Discount Code for viewers of Next Level Carpentry. Use code NLC at checkout for 15% off any and all of the excellent Starbond CA glue products I use and recommend!
bit.ly/3DzbHpj and tell 'em I sent you!
Official NLC teeshirts, posters, mugs and stickers are available through Teespring here: teespring.com/... where sales generate small profits which help support video production too... thanks!
Here's a link to Collector's Specialty Woods in Denver: cswoods.com/
If you follow that link, be prepared to be amazed. If you ever have opportunity to visit CS Woods warehouse/showroom, be prepared to be utterly amazed! In addition to an eye-popping, mind boggling inventory of gorgeous wood slabs of every species and on a grand scale, everyone I encountered in the business from the owner to warehouse/sales staff were as enthusiastic as they are knowledgeable about wood. They were well able to dial in to what I was looking for to the extent that I felt each person felt a bit of 'ownership' of the project and worked to make this Live Edge Joinery project happen. However you interact with this next level business I hope you'll tell them you learned about CS Woods on Next Level Carpentry.
Since you can watch all the great videos uploaded to the Next Level Carpentry Channel here on RUclips for free, those who find enough value here to become patrons through Patreon are a special group of viewers. I work to show my appreciation to those who go above and beyond to support the channel by producing a library of 'patron only' videos. These videos are a peek behind the scenes and often include extra tips, tricks and insight into projects from my RUclips videos. They're a bit less formal, kind of like hanging out in the shop or on a jobsite. If this interests you check into becoming a patron here: / nextlevelcarpentry and you'll have access to those videos and your name should show up in the Patreon Appreciation segment of videos on RUclips.

Matt is a great teacher and takes the time to go in depth for those of us that thirst for the knowledge he is graciously giving us. That is what I call "stressful fun". When things come out like you envision them, there is a real sense of accomplishment. More stress = More Satisfaction. As you may know, I am an artist and taught art for 35 years. My specialty is fine art photography. People have asked, what is more satisfying, creating or receiving praise? I don't need praise. I know when I have achieved or exceeded my goals. And, the process of creating is what I like. Creative work involves problem solving, and problem solving keeps the brain working. Woodworking provides an endless number of challenges.

The venerable Skilsaw Model 367 was my go-to saw way back in the day when the whole thing including the handle was die cast metal. All metal construction meant it was pretty heavy and, since a 6 1/2" blade would easily cut though 2x material at a 45 degree angle for rafters, we preferred it to the larger/heavier 7 1/4" unless absolutely necessary. There were days I'd cut rafters for a full 8 hours... hundreds of commons and jacks in a day... so every extra ounce of weight really made a difference. I'd like to do a 'carpenter rodeo' video sometime to show off some of the amazing cuts and performance that saw's capable of...

Thank you, Matt. I need to follow the same process to inlay a curvy piece of glass to form a "river" window between two free-edged slabs. Making the reciprocol template joint air-tight by clamping and sanding the two edges at once is the step I was missing.

You're sure welcome, Mike! I'm sure you've seen the router bit/bearing combination kits available for making mating templates? I'm pretty sure guys like us would end up sanding templates made with them afterwards to get that 'airtight fit' anyways, right? Hope the rest of your project met your high standards too...
      Best, Matt

Beautiful project. Very much appreciate that you explained each step of your process. This along with highlighting the money cuts shows what’s really involved to bring such a project to life. I am an amateur woodworker. From that perspective, I think this is outside what most people can or would attempt to do. You are a true craftsman.

That was really interesting to see your whole process of joining those slabs. I've seen it do before where the people used guide bushings and different router bit sizes and maths to work out the correct sizes to make the correct cut......... your way of making mirror image templates is so much easier!!!! I also love your out feed roller "table" and will probably make one of my own once I have my table saw set up properly. Thanks for spending all that time, it was definitely worth watching 👍👍👍👍👍

Matt - There is a new bit design for this kind of work - it's a Compression bit - it' has 2 alternating helical flute paterns on it which pull the fibers in from top and bottom edge of hte work piece toward the middle and it means that they slice at the fibers in opposing directions as it spins. The video and pictures of the cut quality looks impressive.

I've looked at solid carbide spiral cutting flush trim bits and, with features like you describe, I should just pull the trigger and get one, right? There would have been a lot less 'fight' when doing the long/wide flush trimming on this project, that's for sure! Thanks for watching and commenting Greg... Best, Matt
