That pack is so huge, it;s like a Santa Claus pack. go camping for 5 or 6 days, and bring toys for the children in the town, lol. It looks awesome, makes me want one. no cramming stuff into a smaller pack not being able to pack it all just easily. The no. 3 just looks like an awesome simple big pack.

Glad I recently discovered your videos. Well balanced and all the essentials plus some amenities. Refreshing and enjoyable over so many that have gotten boring with same old redundant talk and shiny new gear. Am constantly tweaking my set up and picked a few more ideas, with your videos.

Hi Snake plinskin2.0 many thanks for watching and for the kind words, they are very much appreciated :) I'm glad you found the video useful. Yeah I like the frost river packs. I have a couple and I like their traditional looks and feel. Both are vey comfortable considering they are very basic compared to todays modern packs and back systems. Have a great week, all the best, Mark :)

I just found your channel. I have much appreciation for traditional packs for canoeing and have two of these #3 packs and a similar one that's a bit smaller, all from Frost River. Regarding keeping gear dry in that pack in the event your boat tips over, or just because of water sloshing in the bottom of the canoe, the traditional method here in the north country of the U.S. is to get a very heavy-duty plastic bag that lays flat like an envelope when empty, just like the pack does (I use bags with a material thickness of 6 mils, which I think means 0.006 inches). The bag should have the same width as the pack but be nearly twice as long (high), to provide extra material to twist it shut at the top for sealing the opening (a bit of cord tied around the twisted portion of the bag keeps it sealed). The volume of space you can save by not using separate dry bags, which are generally made of stiff material, is enormous (and if dry bags are not made of stiff material they are phenomenally expensive and yet really don't have a very long service life before they wear out and leak). When using the big plastic bag as a liner you can still use properly sized non-waterproof stuff sacks to organize your gear such that the whole pack can be loaded or unloaded in half a minute or so, making every bit of gear (in whatever subpack it's in) readily accessible.
Not to hijack your video, but on this subject of subpacks, I like the side-zippered stuff sacks from Cooke Custom Sewing in the large size. They are perfectly sized to stack sequentially from bottom to top in a #3 canoe pack, filling the full dimensions of the pack when placed that way. Even if nearly empty because there's not much of a certain "category" of gear, the bags still stack perfectly and make efficient use of space while organizing your stuff.

Hi Eric, many thanks for watching and for your awesome comment. I will have to try using the thick plastic bags to help keep the inside dry. The pack is at work at the moment, but with the lockdown I haven't seen it in a while. I hope you are having a great weekend my friend. Stay safe, all the best, Mark 👍😀.

Hi BB, thanks for watching my friend. You can find the lights on Amazon or Ebay as magnetic bivvy lights. They don't cost much more than £5.00. I think mine is made by a company called Prologic. Thanks again, have a great New year, all the best, Mark.

Hi Quinn, yes I like the old style packs. It holds a lot, but is still comfortable for its simple design. The light you can pick up from most camping shops or fishing tackle shops. Thanks for watching, all the best Mark.

Great kit Mark, I'm glad you can upgrade your kit. Quality gear lasts practically forever. Thanks for the video and I hope you have a wonderful new year. - Josh

Hi Josh, I hope you are well and had a great Christmas. Thanks for watching as always. Yeah, I hope the pack sees me out. It should do. It feel like it's built to last. Most of the gear that I get that's made over in the US tends to be well made. You have a great New Year too mate. I'll see you in 2018. All the best, Mark.

A true behemoth of a pack! Very nice. I've recently started using a Frost River Summit Expedition and love it. Very traditional. I love leather and canvas. Thanks for sharing brother. Regards, Wade

Hi Wade, thanks for watching brother. Yeah I have been very happy with it. I was looking at the Summit Expedition pack prior to buying this. They have a nice range to choose from. I had an issue with the leather cracking on the tump line. It was no big deal, but I got in touch with Frost River and within 7 days they had sent a replacement out. So I can't fault their after sale service either. Thanks again Wade, I have subbed to your channel. You have some awesome content :) All the best, Mark.

Mark Bailey Thanks for the sub Mark! No product is perfect, there will at times be issues bit it's how a company deals with it that matters. Frost River is obviously a company that stands behind their products. Good to know my friend. Keep em coming ! Regards

The Old Canoe pack is an old design. I think it goes back to the days of the pioneers in the US, and used for carrying all their kit when portaging. A simple design, that hold everything. Thanks for watching David, all the best, Mark.

Hello Mark where did you buy the canoe pack? Thought you said TBS but can’t find any reference to them on the site? I’d like one if it was on offer but the RRP is a bit strong? Thanks David

Hi David, sorry for the late reply. I bought mine from the bushcraft show last year. The seller at the show was 1948 original equipment. Here is a link to their website. I hope this helps David, all best, Mark. www.originalequipmentshop.com/luggage/frost_river_/10771_0c.html

Hello Mark, Happy new year. I like the light. The pack is nice but a bit too pricey for my taste. That being said I found what for me works great and is probably the best mix of traditional and modern pack design. I use the French Army F1 large campaign rucksack. Like yours it is about 80 L and can be expanded. It is also of heavy canvas construction but it has waterproofing on the bottom which goes up several inches and water proofing on the lid. It has no frame and has very similar shoulder straps and hip strap but extra padding on the back. It is also more barrel shaped as in being taller and narrower like a modern pack. It has grap handles on either side that you can use to lug it around like a duffel or deployment bag and it has load lifters on the shoulder straps. The brilliant feature is the lid can be attached from either the front or back by two snaps (or poppers I think they call them in the UK) and you can unsnap the lid and with the long straps you can actually extend it even further to tuck a bedroll or tent under the lid. The lid also is designed like a pouch of it's own and has one large pocket that takes up the entire lid. It has all metal buckles so no worry about plastic buckles breaking. I don't think I will ever need to buy another pack again. Best of all it cost me $32 CDN.

Hi Red River Scout, Happy New Year too my friend. Yeah for the money, the lights are great. I think a lot of our Carp anglers here in the UK use them as bivvy lights. I picked a few up when I was working in a fishing tackle shop, but I have seen them on Amazon for about £5.00. Your right about the price of the pack. If it had cost anymore then it would of been out of my price range. I tend to use things like the 5.11 rush 72, but I was looking for a pack that will hold as much as I need, especially if going away for longer periods. Funny, I was looking at the F1 pack at the bushcraft show this year. I could kick myself for not picking one up at the time, because whenever I look around nowadays, everyone is out of stock. I think they were 1980 issue, and in good condition. I think they were around £20.00, so probably a similar price to what you paid. I own a couple of old Yugoslavian military haversacks that were issued for the Balkans war back in 90's, and they are great. Thanks again, have a great day, Mark.

Hey friend 🙂 Every piece of your gear is awesome and high quality💪🏻 Looks like you had a nice Christmas! Wow I would gladly take any piece into the woods. Do you like that silky saw? I am thinking of getting a gomboy. I received another LT Wright Knife for Christmas 🙂 A camp MUK. Not just any camp MUK though.... cpm 3v with a saber grind. It has desert ironwood scales with orange liners. That 3v is amazing stuff. Hope you have a great New Year friend🎉 Awesome new pack👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Hi Spider, I hope all is well and you had a good Christmas. It sounds like you did. Them Camp MUK's are a stunning looking knife. It's a shame you can't tag photo's to the comments. I bet it looks sweet with the iron wood and orange. If I decide to pick up another knife I might try the CPM 3v. Everyone who uses it seems to rave about it. I bet you've got a nice selection of Lt's knives now. Yeah I love the silky saws. I'm thinking of getting the gomboy next too. The pocket boy is awesome, but I was thinking of trying the curved blade as well. I've had a few Bahco Laplanders over the years, but I prefer the Silky's. You have a great New year too my friend, all the best, Mark.

Hi, nice one Mark, as always. I'm really liking the canvas possibles pouch, really stylish. Is it waxed ? I need to get something similar for my kit, can you recommend a good dealer or a similar option? Cheers. Take care.
EDIT: I wish you, and everyone else reading this, a Happy New Year!

Hi Edy, I hope you are well brother. Yeah if you are looking for canvas pouches I usually get mine from Beaver Bushcraft. If you are referring to the green pouch that my fire kit is in, then that is where I got it from. But if you are on about the brown one with the zip, then I picked them up off Amazon. But Beaver bushcraft has the better selection. Plus loads of sharpening and fire lighting stuff as well. Cheers Ed, you have a great New Year too brother. www.beaverbushcraft.co.uk/

I haven't been on it in a couple of years, but was thinking of firing it back up in the new year. The weight of the pack isn't too bad. Keeps me fit lol. I hope you and the family have a great new year. See you in to 2018. All the best, Mark.
