    I think a lot of people who now homestead make it really complicated. my family has been preserving for as long as I can remember. Can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be. We had a cellar that we kept all our goods in. We lived in an old farm house. We canned Green beans, corn, tomatoes, peas, lima beans, pickles, pears, apple sauce, peaches, jams and maybe some other things. We had shelves full of these goods. we froze broccoli, blue berries, strawberries, raspberries, We had lots of different types of potatoes, and winter squash in our root cellar. Our food lasted us all winter and spring. We had lots of different kinds of dried beans. We ground our own flour and made our own bread in our old bread mill. We lived a very simple life and ate simple foods.

    Being a herbalist and having around 250-300 herbs, I have found putting bay leaves in containers keeps food moths away. I’ve learned the hard way. Having a shop where my customers expect their herbs sans webs and icky things, I’ve learned what works. This was fun and informative.

    I noticed you have some of those beautiful giant anchor hocking jars with glass lids. They work great for keeping mice and moths out of bulk items. I am always surprised that you have so many bulk items stored in the original paper bags from Azure. If I did that there would be bugs and rodents in everything! That said, you food storage is very inspiring. I would have never realized that my basement has the perfect cold room for food storage until I saw the first pantry tour on this chanel. @theelliothomestead I eliminated a 20 year mice/rat problem here on our farm. Mix equal parts of jiffy corn muffin mix and baking soda. The rats can not burp or pass gas and it kills them. I also put 2 tsp of sugar in the mix to encourage them to eat it. This won't harm your other animals. I cut a hole in a container that only the rats/mice can go in and put that inside another container that only the rats/mice can go in. I hope this helps.

Very good products and the only beef I buy at the store because I know where it came from and how it was raised. I found out recently that quite a few of the major retailers are mixing the beef they sell with imported beef! Support american farmers. especially local ones, and keep the economy stronger.

    I live in SW Idaho and have pantry moths to deal with. I researched containers that will keep them out(or in, so they don’t infest anything else) and found that clamp top glass jars are basically the only thing that will work. They will chew through plastic bags and get into screw top jars and plastic tubs and other containers. I got a lot of the clamp top jars from thrift stores.

    I operate an authentic 1856 root cellar with original shelving. It has a door in the cellar to help keep it at a specific temperature separate from the rest of the cellar, and tubing to the outside, to keep the temperature lower, which you block off when it's warmer or too cold. You shouldn't have to use a/c in what you are calling a root cellar.

    1. Do you have any recommendations for finding a local raw milk source?
    2. Do you find there is any cost savings when buying raw milk and making your own dairy products?
    3. I render my own leaf lard and I love how neutral-tasting it is. Is tallow neutral flavored? Do you use it in baking?
    4. Do you have the AC regulated by a thermostat? Does it have to run a LOT?

    When the **** hits the fan and it is coming... Look good is all that meat in your freezer when you no longer have electricity? Are you even bothering to prepare for that inevitability? Or do you have your head in the sand? Your freezer is a wonderful tool and I believe in free dried food for long term storage I do... But when it hits the fan what will we do with our free to try food if we don't have the water to rehydrate it? True you can still eat it it is freeze dried stay and get the nutrients but it's not very good. I believe you need to have a well balanced storage program that includes multiple methodologies a food preparation. I would recommend that you also expand you're a canning efforts to also start canning meats and other forms of protein. I would also suggest getting away from the Mason jars and getting an actual canning machine to use the metal cans which are more durable especially if there is an earthquake and they block light I like Mason jars I would highly suggest you give a lot more deeper thought to your long term storage and it's actually what it is that you are trying to protect yourself and your family from because right now it seems you're just prepping to prep. And don't forget that when it hits the fan there will be other people looking for food who had no forethought to prep themselves and so will be interested in taking what you have so you should also give serious consideration to your security. does what I'm saying see move it over the top for you? We will see just how over the top you think it is when it hits the fan!

    I miss having a lower level so badly. We moved from the Midwest to the south and unfortunately root cellars/basements are a thing of the past. I don't know where to store my harvests.

    Why have you chosen tol leave rings on your jars?

    • @Dotalina33
      @Dotalina33 Год назад +1

      Just one idea here. My daughter told me you can store one layer on another of canned food but only if you have rings on them which sit lightly on the first rim if jar. I saw she did that. As far as the others if kept on lightly will allow a bad seal to depressurize as she might not have room to store.

    You do an absolutely fantastic job with your family, meals, animals. I do see one concerning thing - for safety of the seal, canned goods should have rings removed and they should not be stacked on top of each other. Even a layer of cardboard on the bottom jars and then add another layer of jars. This is a safety concern - saying this as a Mom. I'm not trying to be negative - hope it's not taken that way.

    It has definitely inspired me. I just lack a freeze dryer. They're super expensive. I'm in a dilemma with my cabbages right now because I do not have a cold room. We have an extra fridge, but it's only a dorm sized one. The main fridge is always too packed. Even though I love krautt, I don't love it enough to turn all my cabbages into krautt. I am hoping that we can keep them in the root cellar we have, but it is not refrigerated, and we do not have a cold room.

      I don’t know if you have much freezer space but I chopped a bunch and froze it and vacuumed sealed it and it tasted great for at least a year.

      If you have a dehydrator that works quite well for storing your cabbage. I use dried cabbage in everything, soups, salads, casseroles.
