As an hobbist, playing with the lathe since 2006, may i give you some suggestions about parting ?
A couple thoughts that don't require re engineering the lathe. If you turn your compound slide perpendicular to the axis of the lathe, so the handle sticks straight out, you will not be applying the force against the sides of the dovetail. Yes it is still important that the gibs are tight, but it should not rock as much in that orientation. Also, you had too much stick out in your cutoff tool, that needs to be as small as possible to reach the center of your work piece. It looked like you had the first cutoff tool about twice as long as it needed to be. With basic leverage math this means the cutting force was putting more force on the lathe, and any flex is also amplified, increasing the tendency of the tool to dive under the work.
Use tour cutting Blade inverted and run back Ward IT Will prevent to Dig un the part due to less regidititi off the mini lathe is the best trick
Congrats you have it all figured out now! All tools have to be on rotational center and oil constantly during the cut and gib problems! If you go in and don't see chips curling off stop!
when I had my mini lathe, having gibs tighter, I had added a carriage lock-which would be locked, I only used hss, lots of cutting oil, feed consistent and fast enough to see curls, before parting, sharpen the hss every time. Parting tool setup in a Joe Pie way, where it doesn’t cut with a flat tip, which means you need to have a small stick out to minimize wandering.
The big LeBlonde I worked on would breeze through parting off. My South Bend 10k usually does fine. My mini lathe very seldom works. Just not stiff enough.
The carriage bolt must be locked when parting
Hey Deez, if the parting blade is below center height it is going to be pulled under the part. Mini lathes aren't rigid enough to handle that downward force. Try to get the blade as close to center height as possible. Also being above center height will cause issues with friction but less likely to bind.
Oh man, I recognize that gray plastic case. Hard to go wrong with Mitutoyo calipers.
Deez, looks like at least one of your tool holders might be bottomed out on the compound. I milled 8mm off the bottom of my compound riser early on to give more room for vertical adjustment with an AXA tool post (factory dimensions are for very small tool shanks). Replacing the riser and compound with a solid block attached to the cross slide would eliminate a handful of joints that are flexing and squirming under load. If you're confident the cutting point is exactly on the centerline and you've eliminated as much flex as you can control, try killing the motor and spinning the chuck by hand to cut out chatter marks, then restart at a lower speed.
Should use cutting oil when parting. Perhaps slow the motor down a bit and have a consistent parting feed. Trial and error with a bit of patience and practice.
In some ways your post simply demonstrates the inadequacies of small lathes , i.e. the lack of rigidity under pressure.
me rn trying to cut 1 inch damascus with my vevor mini lathe no luck with carbide parting tool ( 1212-2 tool)
Bro just got a lathe can you use 1/2 tooling with quick change post?
You’re focusing too much on the grind, and thinner blades are often not rigid enough. Sharper is always gonna be helpful, but you can part with all kinds of different geometries, thicknesses, and if you look at insert parting tools they are not sharp. Keep your tool on center, or very very slightly above, slow down your spindle, and push into the material more aggressively than you think you should. If it chatters, increase your feed rate to get ahead of it. Being timid when trying to part is what messes up most beginners. Side note, you should have no problem parting that 1” piece of steel in a mini lathe. Practice, READ THE OLD BOOKS, and stop listening to other hobbyists on the internet. Watch real working machinists if you’re trying to learn.
Or its because its from china 😂
