@charlessaultersmedia Charles, I understand your concern but I don't think it's fair to ever say that piracy is justified because demand is high yet the cost is out of the reach of everyone. If you goto the 2nd link below the video trailer you can read reviews and see how amazing the response has been for this DVD. Dozens of people have actually said they would have paid more than $300 after watching the DVD. You must look at this as an investment in your business; it changed mine forever!
All this talk is great, but i came here looking for a"tutorial" as written in the title, instead i find a very long commercial to sell a DVD. Maybe it's a good dvd but just don't click bate people plz!
Yeah, I bought it, and yeah it's worth it! Guys, just the tip on working the jawline is worth the price, but you can get that on the trailer video. There are plenty of other jewels on this video. Bottom line is if you wait to develop skills like this by trial and error, you will take much longer to reach your pinnacle. Those of you not wanting to reach the pinnacle anyway, can just save their money. Thank you Peter for sharing this important video. Hope to join the PH2 photographers one day!
Click on "buy now" and it will direct you to a payment page with a Paypal logo...click that and it will say "don't have a paypal account? Use a credit card instead"
@phaskellhall Keep in mind that Peter's DoF is that shallow not so much because it's a signature style, but because he's shooting at a very low ISO under fluorescents (the Kino Flos) and needs a reasonably fast shutter speed to get sharp images of his subjects. He's also in very tight (tighter than most photographers will get) which is going to restrict DoF as well, and that intimacy is part of the package. On a crop-sensor DSLR, a 50/1.8 stopped down to about 2.8 will get the same perspective.
I've been shooting for about a year. But only about 6 months of really understanding light and composition. I took a set of headshots for a friend for free just cause he didn't have money but needed the photo's. Within a week of him uploading his shots on his facebook, I booked 2 headshot sessions. From this day on, every session I book, I'll put towards the DVD. That's 6 sessions.
I think that at the stage of looking at a high quality career changing instructional video course, then you're likely have the kit, or enough to use/hire/borrow. Then yes, this looks an amazing course - i'd imagine photographers could actually quantify improvements if they compared their before and after headshots! Looks like after watching the course you'll see/analyse headshots/headshot shoot situations in front of you at a different level :)
I agree with most everything you say, and I am self taught, however I disagree on a few points. a) Most important part in taking a great headshot is lighting b) 2nd most, is expression, be it genuine or not it has to come across as real and genuine, this I achieved by engaging with you subject and directing your subject to get what is needed c) 3rd if all the photos look the same and your do, the only thing that has changed is the person that was photographed, then that headshot DOES NOT stand out and the actor will very likely NOT get and audition.
wow i definitely got confidence in taken head shot now.. there are local models around me that i know there photographer isnt giving them tips on head shots.. thanks
@liquidchayld Peter uses a 120mm Macro for medium format. For a similar look you probably want an 85 1.4 or maybe a 60mm/105mm macro depending on the min focusing distance. Peter's depth of field is super shallow
@jioboi you can opt for the weekend intensive version at $1500 :) Joking aside, it should change the way you shoot more than any seminar or lecture you've ever taken....I wish I only spent $300 on some of the stuff I've attended!
@jioboi This DVD was created for professionals and it is priceless information if you make money with photography. It's like college tuition for photographers. If you don't shoot for money then it would never be worth it. It would be like going to college to get a degree in biology and then getting a job at McDonalds. If you are already a scientist, paying $300 to learn from the top guy in your field is a no-brainer.
The human face this day and age is one the most important aspect of photography with media, news, tv, internet, social media ect.. everyone wants to looks good and look their best if you can make a person look good and grasp the aspect of the human face and the shapes and shadows ect. you will get loads of work.
As a professional musician who is not a model, boy, I wish I knew you were around a long time ago! Every photoshoot I went to in the past, I asked the photographer to direct me. Nada. I was either barely directed or not directed at all. For me, I had to learn the hard way - learning from lots of bad poses, bad facial expressions, etc. Now, people say "you're photogenic." Not! I'm 5'1 with curves and eyes that close that close up like Bette Midlers when I smile. I hard to learn the hard way.
This adresses the exact reason that I have been afraid to move forward with my business. Because I felt like I had no idea how to coach people to make great photos.
@jioboi we created this DVD for the professional in mind. If you aren't already making a living with photography then this might be a bit over your head. If you are looking to take your business (and photos) to the next level this is an easy $300 investment. Peter is offering a $1500 2 day workshop and I've talked to people who have taken it and it's changed their lives (yeah people have said that). For beginners this will prob be over their heads; it took me months to absorb everything
Lol, the artist will always have something the others do not.....its called...."feeling" So many people buy all the tech and tools hoping it will turn them into an Artist.......Art comes from the heart FIRST, then the mind.....glad to know that still applies to Headshot photography.....=)
@rlmorrisphoto sounds nice, I'm a huge fan of your work, but though I want to learn from it, its a little too expensive for me, would you make a contest giving some away?
@surfsidet0m Hey Surfsidet0m, I agree that a lens does something immediately for you. But from experience, having say a shallow depth of field will never gain you a client while having awesome coaching skills will book you over and over. Goto the link above to read TONS of reviews. Scott Kelby and Zach Arias have both given great responses as well as students on a tight budget. You just gotta prioritize your career, maybe the lens does need to come first
@Beerz76 Something like this is only worth something to you if it's worth something to you. Free advice, you'll ignore. Pay the $300, really take what he's got to say seriously and apply it, and you can make that back on a lazy Monday morning with plenty of change to spare. It's not about being a camera operator; you can learn that anywhere. It's about being a businessperson AND someone who can help other people to sell themselves. That's what the headshot game is all about.
DO NOT PIRATE THE VIDEO!!! We live in a "corporate capitalistic system" notice how I didn't call it a capitalistic system. It takes time to make these videos, the equipment, and talent so why shouldn't these guys make some money off of it, or you can try and learn everything yourself that might take you 10 yrs. If you don't like the idea of it than all of the photographers can get together, put some money down to buy the equipment, get together and try to figure out how to do the things the right way if there is such a thing. Than everyone can learn from it, till than stop crying about how expensive it is and pay up or do the things on your own.
They only problem for me is payment... dont have Visa or something because I dont need it over here in europe.. Is there any other option in paying the dvd ?
£300 for a DVD. Or say a 50mm 1.4 / 85mm 1.8 The thing is - if you buy a lens, your shots may look different solely from the focal length perspective. Tough call. The mention of clubbing together to get these kind of DVDs (say a photography club) seems a decent call. It's an investment - You know what you're getting from kit, but instruction, less so - as in part what you get is from what you put in as well.
To be onist i think its alot of things that make a good shot lighting , facial positioning , facial expression and so on like ive actually taken pictures of myself with bad lighting and its never a gd shot cause you get these lil dark spots on your face but you need to have your face lit up so that you see your face in all its glory
Its not about the gear. It`s what you know and how you apply that. I want that 85 1.4. But I NEED to learn first. Then I can get great photos with a freakin kit lens if I have to.
yeap! It's not about light! It's about actors, the good photographer, HASSELBLAD, LIGHTS! .. all togheter my friends. It's not only about the client and how you make him look! :)
I'm just a gigolo and everywhere I go, People know the part I'm playin'. Pay for every dance, sellin' each romance, Ooohh what they're sayin'? There will come a day, when youth will pass away, What will they say about me? When the end comes I know, there was just a gigolo's Life goes on without me.
@phaskellhall Im a Big fan of your work, true... $300 is cheaper than the worth of all the lectures and seminars, but still though it is a tad bit steep for my pocket :D
I downloaded "The Art Behind The Headshot" and I'm glad I didn't pay $200 for it, in fact I don't recommend that "tutorial" to anyone. Why ? Because its educational value is very low. If it was converted into a textbook it would be not more than 15 pages long. Can you imagine any serious photography book being only 15 pages long ? Of course not, it doesn't exist. And can you imagine anyone buying any good photography book for $200 ? Of course not ! Again ! Videos are vastly overratted compared to books. People think videos have information that is not available elsewhere, but it's false ! That tutorial is 4 hours long, think how many hours it takes to read a book, lets say 12 hours, so now you know that a book contains 3 times more information than this tutorial yet a book costs only $20 (if recent and brand new). So if you spent those $200 on ten books you would acquire 30 times more information !
Whatever you do, don't DOWNLOAD IT FROM THE PIRATEBAY. It's not even there. If you GO TO THE PIRATEBAY and SEARCH FOR "PETER HURLEY THE ART BEHIND THE HEADSHOT" you will not find anything. Don't even bother looking. Seriously IT'S not THERE.
Has anyone really looked at these photos and had the balls to His Egoness how bad they really are? The main guy looks like your Irish Uncle who is trying to look sober at the beginning of a funeral. As for the woman, any expression that says they are easy is not a good look. Besides for the sycophantic hanger ons and those who have already spent far too much for any DVD, even if it was gold plated justifying their choice.
@charlessaultersmedia Charles, I understand your concern but I don't think it's fair to ever say that piracy is justified because demand is high yet the cost is out of the reach of everyone. Bilal Green it’s a commercial for their tutorial
There's an old saying for photographers that goes like this:
"It's all about the expression"
Peter's work proves that in my opinion.
Yeah, I bought it, and yeah it's worth it! Guys, just the tip on working the jawline is worth the price, but you can get that on the trailer video. There are plenty of other jewels on this video. Zoolander had Blue Steel... Peter Hurley has, The Squinch!

Headshots are generally straight on and smiling, not provocative or glam shots

Can that DVD be purchased at Amazon ?
I'm just a gigolo and everywhere I go,
People know the part I'm playin'.
Pay for every dance, sellin' each romance,
Ooohh what they're sayin'?
There will come a day, when youth will pass away,
What will they say about me?
When the end comes I know, there was just a gigolo's
Life goes on without me.
And also some people are camara shy and that can also have a bad effect ona shot
Hmm I'm a have to cop that.
@phaskellhall Im a Big fan of your work, true... $300 is cheaper than the worth of all the lectures and seminars, but still though it is a tad bit steep for my pocket :D
The Art Behind The Headshot is to be quick and stealth!!!! boom! died
nice content, thank you
Eye opener.
I also would rather pay 300$ for 6h than 200$ for 4h of footage.
so please keep the price increase the length!
The guy with the hat shouldn't have looked upwards - it looks strange.
@redtippmann I'll take that as a compliment :)
I have ten of his babies already!!
or 600 for a hands on photography course....
@isashach those who want something for nothing end up with just the same.
$300 seriously? MAYBE $50 or $75, but I'd be shocked if you sell 10 disks.
@jioboi No shit!
yeah email contactfstoppers at g mail.com if you haven't received the email. It's automated so it probably went into your spam folder.
Every image looks like the same American Shutterstock photo.. *Jawn*
WANT!
Awesome, I like Peter Hurley (since you guys made the video "?v=TpKsuP0NlzI")

He's right. Annie Leibovitz's work sucks! She just sits them there and doesn't work with subjects at all 👎🏻

Can you please share a link to your headshots portfolio? I am not trying to be an ass, I genuinely want to see how you do it.
Boring.
uuuuuugh! I feel like Im stuck in this video! old school ego stroking sales pitch. content is ignored when poorly delivered.
good content, Thanks!
