- Thanks to Jennifer Graham of Birstall for supplying the VHS video! This footage apparently was made up of recordings made from 1990 through to 1998.
The rear of the cover reads -
"Oakwell Hall, Red House, The Rydings, St Peters Church, The Market Place, Joseph Priestley House, Fieldhead, John Nelsons Study, May Day Party, Birstall Lights, Britain In Bloom, and the people of Birstall.
Produced by Peter Hudson, Principal Photography Steve Truelove, Additional Cameras Peter Hudson, Dave Morton, Roy Plum, John Anderson, Eddie Reynard, Clifford Oldroyd"
I lived in Thornton Close in the 70s and spent many a happy hour at Oakwell Hall as a child, walking through Fairy Glen from Fieldhead Estate, when it rained, the curator of Oakwell Hall used to let us in to dry and gave us a historical tour round the hall.. nice memories, my grandad had a grocer's shop between Birstall and Fieldhead, he always had a bag of sweets waiting for me when I went to visit him. Lovely video, brought back some memories ❤

Batley and Birstall were built by Irish and Scottish economic migrants to the mills we had (my family are from the Irish side, the Murphy's of Purlwell Crescent.) so while it's heartwarming to see a Scottish Marching Band parading the the centre of Birstall, it's fucking heartbreaking to know that those days are long gone.
The towns we grew up in, *the way of life* we grew up in just don't exist anymore.
Like a dying family member, at least we got to remember them in all their glory and pomp, before the illness that claimed them took hold....

So proud of good old Birstall - filmed in 1998, if you lived in Birstall in 1998 you may recognise a few familiar faces enjoying themselves in Birstall Trades & Friendly Club or maybe in the Birstall Market Place shots of the May Day Parade.
Happy Days
Cheers Richard
excellent footage of birstall we need more films like this.
God. Bless my uncle Malcolm Clegg on his History of Birstall
H❤❤❤❤❤!!
Hardback !😅
My mother was born in Birstall in 1931. She emigrated to the US in 1949 with her father after her mother, Kate, died. Her name then was Margaret Hare, her sister's name was Cynthia and brother's was Roy. As kids, we always felt proud because our mother was English. She always jokes that the only thing she remembers from British history is, "The Battle of Hastings, 1066."
I live in Birstall and it looks nothing like it does now. some stuff is still there but looks so much different. i was born 1998 too
My grandma used to clean Oakwell Hall , Nora Ward 😎
I can't believe his is what it looked before I was only born 2005

31.50 me and my mum 😊
Says 98.....vut sure looks like 1980s to me
I'd agree, I've just seen myself with my mum, if it was 98 I would have been 10 but it looks like I was only 2/3 year old. So it looks more like 1990/91
The film was made in 1998 using footage from 1990 to 1998, as it says in the description.
I think it's the 80's with the age of the cars
