I remember as a 21 year old visiting Bell & Colvil with my boss on the way home from a site visit to spec his Elise (one of the first 100 off the line), still remember it and he basically left it to me. It got, the very pretty purple/blue metallic, premium seats with leather in dark blue, snap off steering wheel, electric windows and stereo prep. He was going to daily it (and did for a couple of years) so needed a bit of comfort. It turned up looking fabulous and to this day its the only one I've ever been in and that was 1996. An Elise might be something i'd have but my head had been turned by TVR at that time (Griffith) so that's what I bought when it came time for me to get a sports car, if they'd fitted a KV6 (for the soundtrack, which is the only thing missing in the Elise IMO) it might have got more of a look in.

What a nice & well described review, I have never driven an Elise but that gave me a good impression

S1 is such a clever & pure little car & the early cars with MMC/Ali hubs/bootlid etc are more like 725KG. The Sport 135 (140-145BHP) is significantly quicker than the standard car & the power is more accessible than with the 143BHP VVC 111S.

The S2 is better as it has a different suspension setup as the S1 was found to be quite twitchy on the rear the best one to have is the S2 with a red engine cover, this means the triple layer head gasket was used and doesn’t suffer the dreaded head gasket failure.

Most S1 will now have S2 springs and shocks or other aftermarket suspension. Head gasket failure is exaggerated my car still on it’s original- just fit a remote thermostat kit (PRRT). S2 where given skinny tyres to make them understeer. Quaife torque biasing diff is great addition for road use.

The Elise unquestionably improved over time, but there's something special about the S1¬

Depends which S2 reguarding engines. After 2004 they use Toyota engines and gearboxes, much more reliable but heavier. Then after about 2006 heavier still as they had to add airbags etc.
The S1 suspension used Koni coilovers, the S2 uses Bilstein which are a bit softer and considered better on the road.

K series is a wonderful thing. Seriously, need to stop the moaning. I’ve had Honda, Toyota engine horrors. Of the 60 years of Porsche, there are at least 14 years that you just can’t touch because the engines are made of chocolate.
