  • In which the beloved entertainer invites us to his Massachusetts attic to inspect a letter from Morrissey, a note from Bono, a school report, some favourite singles, albums, tickets etc and remembers the "accidentally brilliant" Marc Bolan, Beefheart pouring brandy on his harmonica, PiL on Whistle Test, the "frightening" stage presence of Joy Division, nicking ideas from Dylan and the Psychedelic Furs and wanting to be "a male Aretha Franklin". Includes valuable pearls of wisdom - eg "you can only like the Doors 'til you're 21".

    I actually first met Lloyd Cole at a Charity do. We later kept in touch and when we lived in Glasgow, learnt Macromedia Flash and how to be fathers together. Even though his last album was a wee stinker and way too autobiographical, he's always had an intelligence of a certain kind.

    I have had the distinct pleasure of meeting Lloyd a couple of times, and he is truly a gentleman. What a genuine, warm fellow who always had time for fans. I've always been a massive fan and I'm so pleased to hear that Patreon represents a platform that allows him to stay productive and profitable. And hearing him mention Paddy and Prefab Sprout was so wonderful, as Paddy and Lloyd represent - to me - the pinnacle of smart, catchy intellectual pop. Love it!

    Another great podcast guys, very pleasantly surprised how much I agreed with Lloyd as I have to admit I was never a fan as Crass, Hawkwind and the Subhumans were more my bag at the time! He also reminded me that seeing PIL on their first tour when they reformed a few years ago is one of my favourite gigs of all time. Someone gave me a couple of tickets and although I wasn't expecting much the band and John blew me away - John getting emotional while singing Death Disco ( a song about his Mum dying of cancer) was incredibly moving. Also guys, how about getting Jah Wobble on the podcast, top geezer and a great story teller

    • @davidsanderson5918
      @davidsanderson5918 3 года назад +2

      Yep PiL at Bristol Academy a few years ago. I think we saw Lydon at his best in this period. Plenty of swagger and spit of course but with some emotional maturity too (as you point out), really brought the room together and made it a PiL zone!!

    I'm 56 and still like both The Doors AND Lloyd Cole and the Commotions. As for Lloyd, I reckon he must've been into The Doors a few years past 21, unless it's pure coincidence that the words 'Brand New Friend' crop up repeatedly in 'Hyacinth House'. Now I'm on the topic, I've just remembered that Glen Patterson, now an eminent novelist but many years back my neighbour in uni halls, was keen to broaden his then girlfriend's musical horizons, and to that end bought two tapes for her birthday: one was 'Rattelsnakes', and the other was the first album by The Doors. Fine choices both.

    great to hear from lloyd cole here,he is so frank and open about his life in music,it is refreshing and really interesting,some great stories...i have thought for a long time it would be a good idea to do a tv series on people like lloyd,who have been in the charts in the past,and find out what they have been doing since...i would love to know what happened to them,so if any tv producer is out there,you can start with lloyd...some of his music choices here were not clear,they should be listed...i bought his first solo album,it was excellent,there wasn't a poor song on it,which is rare for any album...

    LC is a really interesting chap, not least as he has musically taken quite a journey from The Commotions to electronica and back again (see his modular setup in the background and also his collaboration with Hans-Joachim Roedelius etc.). I also share his enthusiasm for that Isaac Hayes LP. I also concur re:Wobble also. Saw him chat about his book a few years back and he has the no nonsense air of a man who could manage a football team to Cup Glory! Great stuff to simultaneously balance that with level of glorious nonsense to required to be still knocking out great music!

    Wow - that was wonderful, great episode! Great to see Mark take more of a lead too, for obvious reasons I guess.
    I remember going to the Glasgow Apollo in the early 80s to see PiL. There was a guy hanging around the door with an axe in his hand. When I saw him, I said to my chum "let's go for a walk around the block and come back" - who goes to see a gig with an axe?! Leaving the house, wallet, yep, house keys, yep. Axe, yep.
    Great to hear Lloyd's pal (and old friend of the podcast, Robert Forster, get a mention - it would be fantastic to have him on here. Not that Mark or Heppo would probably know about these things but "The Clarke Sisters" - such a great song - is on "Tallulah")
    The comment "it's okay to like the Doors until your 21" is probably the best comment I've heard on here recently, and is so right!
    Loved seeing Lloyd show PiL "Metal Box" too. For me, one of the top three best rock albums ever made, along with the self titled third VU album and Television "Marquee Moon".
    Great to hear Lloyd mention the Tim Burgess listening parties on here again, Lloyd's back again later tonight and he is a bit of a Listening Party king. He gives wonderful comments on his albums. Also, get Tim on here!
    Also, The Only Ones is Peter Perrett, not John - I mean, come on!
    Finally, Lloyd's favourite album - Kraftwerk "Computer World", fantastic. Such a shame Heppo gave it 4/10 in his Smash Hits review at the time!

      @Mark Stevens Hard to pick a best top off my head. Gotan Project show was stunning, Funkadelic in a small venue, so tight. Pharoah Sanders in an even smaller one. Steve Reich and 'band', so unique. John Surman, his tone live was gorgeous! Tippett's Mujician were perhaps the most talented musicians I've bumped into live, another level. Kraftwerk gig Lyceum 81?, is one that sticks out though, visually more so than musically, although their 4 Lp's from 74-78 should probably be in any half decent collection.
