After literally decades of overseas flights, most with babies and small children on board. I have less problems with crying children, and more problems with drunk adults that want to crowd my seat, take off their shoes and not take a bath for at least a week before the flight. On a lighter note. I just rewatched an older YT video of "What can Rena Reach!"
I say this as a flight attendant of over 7 years. Infants and children have never given me as much problems as full grown adults especially intoxicated ones.
I always feel empathy for parents struggling with little ones. I do put my headset on full blast to drown out whatever commotion is happening. As long as the little ones aren't throwing items or kicking seats, never a bother. Thanks for sharing your japan life with us!
Hi Reina! I just thought you would find this cute- I work in early childhood care and education in Ireland and here it is fairly universal across day cares and nurseries that children from ages 1-2 are referred to as "wobblers" rather than "toddlers" because though they might be walking they are not great at it yet so they're still "wobbly." When they turn 2 is when we call them toddlers.
Babies on flights have never bothered me, my issue is when kids are slightly older and the parents do nothing to control them. Once had a 3 hour flight with a kid kicking the back of my seat literally the whole flight. I was beyond pissed by the time we landed. Also I would really like to hear more about the daycare system, that's actually why I clicked on this vid. I've really enjoyed learning about life in Japan from your vlogs, it's fascinating how some things are so much better but some things are so awful like the rules for pregnant women and this bizarre daycare system. What are you supposed to do if your parents are not suitable caretakers? I would never leave a child alone with my mother.
The whole not qualifying for childcare because they think your mom should be doing it is like us never getting student grants because the parents make “too” much and should be fully paying for college.
@@Mwoods2272 working from home doesn't mean she's free to care for her kid during work hours. I'm pretty sure she still also does translations for anime and hosting for first we feast and then collaborations with other creators like the trash taste boys. That variable schedule also makes it harder to find childcare. A lot of daycare require set days and times to keep their slots consistent and expectations realistic.
In my Japanese culture classes in college I wrote a paper about the lack of childcare in Japan and how that affects women's careers and society development. I don't have access to it anymore, and this was about 10 years ago, and i know a lot of what I covered has been or has been attempted to be fixed. I don't remember reading about the grandparent rule, but my focus was mainly on Toyko.
Reina, when you just said your one year old daughter is a narcissist, i just cracked up so hard. i have dealt with crying babies before on a flight to and from GA. they don't really bother me, in fact sometimes i helped out parents trying to get them to stop crying by doing goofy faces or silly voices. works sometimes. you guys have a safe trip and a happy thanksgiving. i know this video is late past thanksgiving already. but, it still counts. love and hugs to you all and god bless, my dear old friends.
Please share the daycare system more! My husband is Japanese and we plan moving and having kids there. Even with its problems I think that it’s way better than the US.
Hope the flights went well! I have never had a problem with young kids or babies on flights if the parent(s) are actually trying to calm them down and get them to behave. I think you have put way more effort into being considerate to others than maybe any parents ever on a flight. If you put in that much effort and anyone is upset with you, that’s on them, you’re doing more than enough. I just hate it when kids are misbehaving and the parents act like it’s not their problem and everyone else can just deal with it, but that applies for everywhere, not just planes 😂 I saw someone else say rude adults where their biggest issue on flights and I definitely second that. I’d much rather a loud kid than some rude dude.
I am sending you the power of mom thoughts that your baby may behave on the plane however if the altitude bothers her may the passengers be forgiving. With that being said the family portrait is beautiful. My son is three and going along with the situation helps so much with stress. Not to say it’s not there 😂 but I remind myself they are learning what it means to be human
That’s so weird about the daycare situation! I used to live in Japan and now live in Korea. We have free daycare here (in Seoul it’s probably harder to find a spot, but where I live, it’s really no issue, so we can choose wherever we like basically) and it’s great quality and there isn’t a time limit like yours has. Korea does it because of the low birth rate, so I am shocked that Japan doesn’t follow suit!
Capacity for public daycare centers depends on where you live in Japan. It's not a surprise that single mothers and working mothers are given priority in public daycare centers. If need be, she can always pay for private day care or hire a babysitter.
That busy board being in a zip pouch is so good. Crying babies on flights is...rough. It's not that they cry. Of course babies cry. It's the parents who don't even want to attempt to distract/soothe. The ones you never see walk the aisles or put on kids shows because Ipad bad. Idk man I wish long haul planes had just like 3 dedicated rows for families with sound blocking curtains and just a more family friendly space so kids aren't as stressed overall.
Reina! Use the black cat Yamato for your luggages next time! Seriously such a life saver. Pick it up at Haneda at the end of the departures T3. Send a day or 2 ahead. Also, I just did a driving tour around Izu! I LOVE Shizuoka!
personally, i’ve worked in child care for years (currently i’m an infant teacher) so i’ve been on the other side of tantrums, so i never think anything of crying kids. honestly it just makes me feel bad for the embarrassed parent
I went on 5 ish trips of various length with my daughter between the age of 1 and 2, and it is absolutely chaotic but so worth it! You guys will be fine I’m sure :) you did the right thing with the night flight. She might wake up a bit here and there but I’m sure she will still sleep good chunks of it. And don’t worry about the noise - we’re all humans. Babies and kids are loud, they have feelings and needs and that’s normal! Most people who tend to be inconvenienced by loud noises usually bring headphones or ear plugs on flights so they likely will be able to manage themselves. My worst concern was my toddler kicking the seat in front of us 😅 we’re still working on that.
When my wife at the time girlfriend and her son were about to move in finding a daycare for him was like fighting dark souls 2 boss!!!! We ended up with really good Shinto daycare. It was a great choice. My advice is to try and get into a government school but also look for the best/ schools that fit with you. Don't be afraid to ask questions because based on the answers you'll find out real quick what school knows their shit and don't.
Your hair is beautiful!!! Wishing you and your family a blessed holiday season! I work as a flight attendant. I really don’t have a problem with crying babies. I approach them, make some funny noise, get their attention, and they stop. I engage the parent and the baby with conversation. When going through the cabin I stop by and check on them. If the baby is crying, I use their name, focus on the baby. I think it’s just distracting the baby is the key. Knowing someone else is paying attention to them. Looks like you’ve got a good plan. (Remember to bring some plastic bags to put dirty diapers in when tossing them in the lav. My only baby issue is poopy diapers!!!I )wish you safe travels.
I love the copious amount of hope Reina has at the end will sustain her daughter. Then when reality kicks in she mentally is like, “shes a monster…” i think EVERY parent goes through this at just the thought of traveling with babies. 😂 i genuinely hope this went well for you Reina! 😁🙏🏼
Good luck on your flight and hope you had an awesome Thanksgiving! Honestly I feel bad for parents who are taking care of their children on the flight. Flying is already stressful without kids so I'm pretty sympathetic towards the family and am even down to help out if it's not weird. Adults can just put on headphones and listen to something if they're bothered by the noise.
I'm the same I always think "these poor souls minding their distressed baby" and think if there' any way I can offer help without it coming across weird.
As a fellow mother to a 3 year old and 1 year old I commend you for traveling so far. I have a 2 hour flight coming up for my 17 month old and I'm already dreading it! Best of luck, looking forward to the update!
Awe, she is getting so big! Good luck, hope your trip went smoothly. Honestly, babies crying on flights don’t bother me at all. Now when kids are allowed to run amok, terrorizing & being wild it drives me insane! I don’t hesitate to tell a wild child to go find their parent 😂
Loved the video! I would love to learn more about the Japanese daycare system and what it looks like raising a kid in Japan! I love the Airi updates, she's just the cutest
We're planning on taking our baby on a few flights next year so he'll be 10months for his first flight. The TV remote is hilarious and the busy bag is genius! Please share more tips if you can especially products to help baby sleep on plane
Adore the glitter eye. I have very little eyelid real estate so I am always on the lookout for looks that work. Your eyes are bigger than mine but I think I could pull this off lol
Babies have every right to be in public places. I think a lot of people forget that babies are tiny humans with human needs and that when they are upset they cry. If it bothers you you need to get you some noise cancelling headphones and an eye mask and just chill. The baby physically can not chill. lol If you are the grown up you are the one who needs to deal with it. If you are sitting next to a crying baby offer to help the parents. It's hard on them too. You know.
The hair is stunning! Um i definitely cant stand hearing kids scream on flights but i also empathize with the parents though 😅 A few cries isnt noticed honestly because i always have headphones on it would only be if its the whole flight but again i feel for the parents! Hope it went better than expected!
i know it isn't really your style of content, but there is a really interesting documentary on japan's prison system that i'd love to see your thoughts on. in particular the fact that the police there tend to just keep you locked up until you confess to whatever they think you did, which is absurd to me.
I'm already a mom, so I don't mind crying kids. Though when they do that cry that breaks the sound barrier (my son still does that sometimes) then I get annoyed. But it's understandable. They're tired, cranky, bored, their ears hurt, maybe their teeth/gums hurt. I would be crying too.
I invested in some very good sony noise cancelling headphones I'm anxious to try on a plane. They work fantastically at the grocery store where my anxiety spikes. I can't hear anyone except my music or podcast. I personally hate crying babies on planes, but that's because I get anxiety being in a tube of people. I never expect the parents to apologize though, I just handle my own environment. Use those noise cancelling headphones etc.
The only way I got my children into nursery in Japan was I had to go private and they will go all the way through until they graduate. Plus I my parents don’t live in the country. They are not shady. And yes it is a private school. But i want to achieve their goals in life.
lmao explaining all the carry-on stuff was so funny and cute. great ideas! I hope the flight worked out, but if it didn't, you know you tried your best lol. when the kid is really young, i find it hard to be mad if they are crying. when they get a bit older and in control of their behavior, then it starts becoming a parenting or behavioral issue. honestly the best thing is a set of headphones while traveling. you can't control other people but you can try and provide yourself a more relaxing experience with something as simple as headphones. even a cheap set of earbuds really helps drown out a good chunk of unwanted noise. a pair of earbuds or cheap noise canceling headphones should be an essential when having to fly over a few hours. it's not the cheapest thing in the world but even at US airports, you can get a cheap pair of earbuds for $20 at one of the concession stores (which i recently got last week cause i misplaced my other in my check in before flying).
Babies/toddlers on flights are ususally no probelm, if they cry I can filter it out pretty easily. Bigger children are sometimes more if a problem, i particularly remember a flight from Europe to Shanghai with a elementary school child kicking my seat for what seemed like hours... That's more difficult to filter out and the parents didn't seem to care 🙈
Thanks for sharing! I’ve only taken my kids on road trips. My 1st was not a good rider as a baby but he’s a pro now👍 (6) My second was much better. Our youngest (3months) rides well during the day with the light distracting her but she hates riding at night. We all learned patience the hard way😬 I will say as a nerd mom I’ve loved sharing my childhood with my kids💛 The boys love Pokémon and Zelda (watch daddy play) and we got our youngest a Zelda doll for Christmas🥰
We don't qualify for daycare either (Yokohama) until my daughter is 3 years old 🥲 I really wanna work again, but I would literally be working just to pay for daycare.
I've seen you do a bunch of videos where you eat a bunch of food. Whether you're trying all the snacks from bokkusu, foods from konbini, or trying some new menu items from a restaurant. Do you really eat all that food, or do you share with Mike?
That's crazy about daycare. Kinda weird thought when you said it was the opposite in the US and then talked about public/private schools. Daycares and school are pretty things in the US. Sure daycares may teach some things but they are by no means a school. You are right though, public schools are mehhh, and private schools are supposedly giving a better education. IDK how true that is but it is the general view of the population.
I may be an outlier, but I've worked with kids long enough that I can just tune out crying babies on planes, the noise doesn't really bother me. I wear sound-cancelling headphones on flights anyway. The only time I ever really get bothered by families on planes is when the parents are clearly ignoring/getting mad at their own kid trying to express a need. :/
No issue with babies and toddlers at all. We travelled with our for years. Sometimes good sometimes bad. So these days, we help out in flight. Especially with single parents, sometimes we’ll offer to keep the little one entertained for an hour so that mom can take a cat nap or some such, even going to the bathroom in peace. Little ones like new things and new people, let other people help! And years later, pay it forward. 🫡
As a wrestling fan you should call it an outlaw Child Care Center😂. In the wrestling history an Outlaw organization was someone that was unsanctioned by the State athletic Commission. They they would operate against the established territory
Your hair looks amazing! I’m going to need an update on how all the baby distraction toys turned out. And babies crying on flights, let’s face it, we all hate it. But, babies are babies, it’s no one’s fault. I think if you are someone who is bothered by it then you should invest in noise canceling headphones. I personally am always way more happy about loud happy baby sounds than loud sad baby sounds. Don’t worry too much, once everyone gets to where they are going they won’t be hung up on it anymore anyway. Wishing you safe travels!🎉
My friends son just started hoikuen, so I’d be curious what some of the other factors are for what qualifies a family or not. Is it just that your mom lives nearby and isn’t elderly? What if she also worked?
Girl, I fly everywhere for work and babies do not bother me at all. I have AirPods and many many hours of music. Most people from what I see bring headphones so I think that’s just the norm. I don’t hear shit lol.
I'm not a fan of crying babies ever but not something to get pissed off about. I know it's more stressful for the parents who are probably doing their best but babies are going to cry no matter what. If you're someone very bothered by it, I have 3 words for you: Noise Cancelling Headphones. :)
Also, babies crying on flights drive me crazy. I know that it's honestly the parents' fault for letting it happen, and other times just factors that are out of control (e.g. maybe the baby is confused given it's not their usual territory of the pressure) but usually a baby crying ESPECIALLY on a plane where I can't escape sets me off.
Let me start by saying I *really* don’t like kids and babies. If I could avoid them for most of my life, I would. But on an airplane, as long as the parents are making some attempt to console their child and to shut it up, I get it, I’m fine, I’m not gonna be silently judging or giving a side eye. It’s a plane, half the time IM crying (obviously quietly, lol.) and a parent can’t just pick a baby up and take it outside on a damn plane. Even going to a different part of the plane, I’m likely still going to be able to hear it. As long as the parent isn’t just letting the banshee shriek until it loses its voice, I’m fine. Even more so on such a long flight. I’m fussy and bored and getting antsy on a 5hr flight. I can’t imagine being a baby/toddler/child on a 13 hour flight. But you have no choice if you want to see that family. So as someone who really doesn’t like Littles, you’re fine.
After literally decades of overseas flights, most with babies and small children on board. I have less problems with crying children, and more problems with drunk adults that want to crowd my seat, take off their shoes and not take a bath for at least a week before the flight.
On a lighter note. I just rewatched an older YT video of "What can Rena Reach!"
nothing says we need to increase the population of Japan by not providing essentials services for child care.
All the voters are over 60, they don't need daycare.

My son does the same thing in photos! It's funny to look back on, but I'm the same way in the moment
crying babies are nothing. i have my earphones on anyway~ and i know the parent is trying their hardest >.
Your hair looks absolutely stunning! Adorable! Love it ❤ hope you and your family had a lovely thanksgiving holiday!
Can you do a Q and A video on what's it like being a Japanese and American couple living in Japan with a mixed kid
Please update on the busy book. I need to know I should make that for my one year old

My second was much better.
Our youngest (3months) rides well during the day with the light distracting her but she hates riding at night. We all learned patience the hard way😬
I will say as a nerd mom I’ve loved sharing my childhood with my kids💛 The boys love Pokémon and Zelda (watch daddy play) and we got our youngest a Zelda doll for Christmas🥰
It's not the babies fault. Noise canceling headphones exist for this reason.
I didn't know they had Guzman and Gomez in Japan, we have them in Illinois
We don't qualify for daycare either (Yokohama) until my daughter is 3 years old 🥲 I really wanna work again, but I would literally be working just to pay for daycare.
Wow, she is your mini-me!!
I'd like to know more about the daycare system. I plan on having kids here.
Hopefully everything went well
crying babies on flights are inevitable. what i had is the older kid behind me that kicks the back of the seat for hours at a time.
Sad that 'old' Japan McDonalds looks better than fresh McDonalds here in Vancouver, Canada
I am ah fan of your channel
I may be an outlier, but I've worked with kids long enough that I can just tune out crying babies on planes, the noise doesn't really bother me. I wear sound-cancelling headphones on flights anyway. The only time I ever really get bothered by families on planes is when the parents are clearly ignoring/getting mad at their own kid trying to express a need. :/
I hope the flight was easy, I know the fall sure wasn't 😅
No issue with babies and toddlers at all. We travelled with our for years. Sometimes good sometimes bad. So these days, we help out in flight. Especially with single parents, sometimes we’ll offer to keep the little one entertained for an hour so that mom can take a cat nap or some such, even going to the bathroom in peace. Little ones like new things and new people, let other people help! And years later, pay it forward. 🫡
Would you consider going back stateside to get the services you need?
Your new hair suits you really well. 💕
I would be interested in hearing about the childcare system in Japan.
Whats the difference between a kimono and yukata?
As a wrestling fan you should call it an outlaw Child Care Center😂. In the wrestling history an Outlaw organization was someone that was unsanctioned by the State athletic Commission. They they would operate against the established territory
You had me at N.Y. burger! Teri chicken filet?!
Is the cost of the daycare free or subsidized? If so, it makes sense that qualifying would be 'tight' and on at need basis.
the haircut turned out SO GOOD!!! I love the color and the layers omg!!
My friends son just started hoikuen, so I’d be curious what some of the other factors are for what qualifies a family or not.
Is it just that your mom lives nearby and isn’t elderly? What if she also worked?
Reina buying her kid dog toys fr the first 2 to keep em distracted 🐱
Hey can someone let Reina know that her Facebook has been hacked and is posting scam links?
Girl, I fly everywhere for work and babies do not bother me at all. I have AirPods and many many hours of music. Most people from what I see bring headphones so I think that’s just the norm. I don’t hear shit lol.
It's wired because I usually go to places to get gifts not the other way around
Im SUPER interested in learning about child services in Japan! Especially since you gave the perspective of growing up in the US for the most part !
Sorry to be random, any update on mecha-ude?
Yo Reina Scully is such a bomb.
Time to add a digital version of your IC card to your phone Reina, for if you forget your IC card again
yes yes pleas i want to learn
I think there shold be child free flights or at least sections with sounddampening between the sections.
