Never knew that. You could see some Marines with the pacific with em but no all of them. Did they just have them tied to the haversack?
The marines used the camo first, and the tied camo was a shelter half
@Freduinst it was a poncho they attached to their packs. They used the poncho more than their shelter halves in combat.
@@huasohvac most didn’t roll up the poncho and put it on using the attached loops of a m41 pack system upper, most put it in the flap of the haversack. Also they put it into the “combat pack” also known at the m41 lower. The shelter half was always tied to the m41 pack upper when in use. The poncho was also considerably darker than other frog skin colored items.
Yeah it worked best in the pacific jungles. Not so much in European towns or snow

I think I saw this myth for the first time on the history Channel with a small recreation of Americans and Germans shooting their own guys
Fun fact: during the Vietnam War lots of GIs purchased duck hunter pattern camoes from their allied forces because they blend in best with jungle environments
I have a set of the duck hunter camo pants from like kmart or something in the 60s
That was also how tigerstripe came into circulation.
Would you rather fight a thousand duck-sized vietkong or one vietkong-sized duck?
@@jean-lucwalker3690Both.
They don't actually...it was just what was available, like tiger stripe which was taken from the arvn.

I studied this a few years ago, the mistaken identity theory about mistaking this camo with German camo uniforms is a bit of a myth. The US top brass wanted to standardise uniforms to the 43 pattern but there was a shortage of 43 uniforms being made in time for the D day landings, so in later June these camo uniforms were available in stores and were used to make up the shortage until 43 stocks were made up. The army cammos were used stateside for a lot of training, it was these stocks that went on to Normandy. These cammos can still be seen being worm as late as September in the Battle for Brittany France either pants or jacket. They weren't discarded but handed in at R&R for a new set of clothing as the cammos were of limited stock. At a certain distance the cammo pattern on both German and US blends as one colour. The US top brass were in favour of the British uniform and thought Brit commonwealth troops looked very smart and uniform, hence the ike jacket worn near the end of the war by the US.
The British also mistaken the US army with their M1 helmets in North Africa as Italians. Later in the war the British paratrooper smoke was near pattern to the German style of camo, the British snipers also used German camo smock for cover but no report of mistaken identity.
This dude time traveled from WW2 just to make shorts, props to him
FINALLY someone who knows the real reason why the camo uniforms werent issued anymore..
Btw another reason why it wasnt issued any more was that the USMC needed more fabric so the army camo resources went to the USMC for the PTO
Bro LOOKS like a soldier from WWII… that’s blowing my mind 🤯
There were friendly fire incidents, but not any more among that unit than any others.
My assumption is logistics and delivering the uniforms to specific units was a problem.
That being said, the marine squad that worked with the OSS behind enemy lines used frogskin helmet covers
The places we know of FF incidents were mainly where the uniforms were very similar
RTR tankies in their black coveralls for instance looked like Panzer Crews a couple of times they were shot at
And their are accounts that Paras wearing their Denny’s were shot at because they looked like Germans funnily enough neither the Dennison Smock or the black coveralls were withdrawn from service
As a slightly colorblind person, I can definitely see a dark green uniform being confused for a brown one. Color blindness is affected by distance and surrounding lighting too, meaning it would take a second to tell who it is.
@@wargey3431 Paras had a lot of friendly fire just due to the nature of their job and being behind enemy lines. Uniforms might not have mattered there.
When adjusted for inflation, it cost $256 per infantry soldier to be equipped with gear.
It currently stands at around $18,000 today.
The only uniform that I ever heard of being discontinued were the Herringbone Tweeds because they somewhat resembled waffen ss camo uniforms.
TLDR: It doesn't work and faded quickly
A WWII vet I knew said the Army issued the camo uniforms as work uniforms in the US. He said he painted his barracks in those camo uniforms.
Still more effective camouflage than UCP
Finally somebody who makes good yt shorts
USA WWII camo a real collector's item and rare no doubt.
Imagine mistaking your friend for a German soldier right after he comes out from battle and you shot him, that would be so sad 😞
Great video, your very educational
My stepdad's grandma was full-blooded German as well as my stepdad to my children . There great people .
It actually is well documented in the 2nd Armored that GIs were mistaken for SS due to the similar camo patterns.
SS was a tiny minority of German forces.
@@dannygjk Not really. Especially in the later war times.
@@ghettobecher1352 What do you mean when German forces were decimated?
@@dannygjk Its still a fact that the ss had over 900000 members with 38 Divisions in the field. The Wehrmacht had about 2.75 Million Soldiers in the field in 1939. Peak was 17,3 Million Soldiers.
@@ghettobecher1352 You are including everyone and their dog in that 900,000 - not proper SS.
And the Darker Green looks amazing.
love this dude. it's like he was plucked for the original version of all quiet on the western front. he honestly looks so jolly, that it's infectious.
friendly fire is basically unavoidable in most situations
THANK GOD I’ve seen so many stories on the internet about how people were mistaken as Germans, and I’m glad this finally was revealed.
They used the same camo uniforms they did in ww2 during the Korean war, and I have my great grandpa's frog camo jacket from Korea (im not sure if he wore one in ww2 as well, but if he did it's probably been thrown away because of the deterioration) so I can say for certain those uniforms were not that great. They ripped easily, the camo wasn't that great, and they faded fast.
Funny, your great grandfather fought in the Korean War and my (I’m 59) great grandfather fought in the Civil War.
They used them in Nam too.
the dye used in he camo patterning was acid and caused the cotton to degrade more quickly. Add in heay, moisture and acid sweat and enzymes fromfrom excertion and that is the result.
Imagine being shot, but your in Japan
Love this war guy, should expand into another 50 years of history
“Kraut!!!” *Fires three shots, and missed every single one* “Oh wait, it’s just Johny.”
Betrayal.
Betrayed.
Hmmmm, as he was describing the defects of the uniforms, I can’t help but think of the ACU.
Even these days camo patterns can be failures. One recent attempt actually made personnel easier to see since it didn't incorporate enough brown and earth tones elements in it. Humans' eyes react quickly to movement. changes in pattern in areas around them are ancestrally triggered from prehistoric times.
Logistics makes much more sense than friendly fire by camo.
Another major factor he forgot to mention, was that they were a lot hotter to wear than standard uniforms. They didnt breath nearly as well, and the troops overheated more easily as a result.
Just remember the us army dropped 5 billion on the worst camouflage ever made and it was less effective than wearing on solid color
Friendly fire is a record that no country wants to document.
My grand uncle was 2nd armored through out the war he was issued a set of the hbt camo in the Normandy campaign and state there where shelled by the Canadians on several occasions but that might have just been a Canadians issue he wore his camos until he got to Berlin

The OD green is a great base by itself. Often with sweat stains or lite streaks of black paint and dirt along with natural camouflage they blend exceptionally well. No matter how good a camo pattern the first dead give away will be movement. Still love the OG107’s for cost/utility/comfort/color base
That first sentence ran on for half a day.
I can only imagine how valuable that uniform is now.
Real reason: everyone who wore them, as soon as they put them on, were never seen again
Uh, am I the only one who feels like he’s staring into my soul?
This dude knows, he was there.
While its always an important factor to consider, cost wasnt as big of one for the US compaird to other countries.
"Ah my foot!"
"My bad."
Talking of friendly fire, it's estimated that a third of all Allied casualties in Italy during WW2 were caused by friendly fire.
That alot.
I’m pretty sure that’s why PID is a think [Positive Identification] for those who don’t know helps make sure your not firing at friendly or civs
FINALLY!!!! A youtube vid passing out the correct info on this nice work mate
Funny thing is that cammo in ww2 not only used darker but also bright colors like yellow, etc.
My old man was a sea bee in the navy in the Pacific , and later reached the rank of Capt. in the army's corp of engineers . My stepdad was a waist gunner in a B17 . I'm glad people are remembering WW2 . You know your stuff .
"More expensive" is all the reason they need.
these shorts are so good
I like the logic here"Omg I can't see you but I can see the German in you!"
I'll bet those camo uniforms are worth a pretty penny if you could find one that survived
So glad I found this channel ive been in love with ww2 history since I've been raised by my great grandmother who was born before ww2
There's something about this guy that just sells the fact he looks like a ww2 soldier
Back in the day, camouflage uniforms where expensive to make
The battlefield today: everyone wearing multicam*
Because they were expensive. It always boils down to that
Thank you for such well researched videos. It's nice to see someone young taking an interest in history.
Yes but they came up with a different camel that was lighter
US ARMY camo uniforms was supplied to not only 2nd Armored div. but also to 13th Airborne Div. in Asian campaigns
My great grandfather was part of one of the few units in normandy which used the camo uniforms. He was part of second armored 41st armored infantry
It did happen to the US Navy Seabees in Desert Storm. They were the last US unit to change away from the Green Satins (pronounced sateens), which happened to be the same surplus uniform the Iraqis were issued when they were supported by the US in the eighties.
the medic symbol on a helmet is a target, aim for the middle of the cross and you get more points
My father who was in World war II . Said that he liked the camouflaged German paratrooper pant because it had many compartments, and it was a wel made
pair of pants. So he wore them and carry a Luger he had removed from a Nazi prisoner. He wore the pants because they had many
compartments, and he carried the Luger because he knew they would shoot him instead of taking him prisoner. He preferred death over being a prisoner.
today when everyone wears multicam 👁️👄👁️
Friendly fire happens more often than people think
Dang they really want to turn friendly fire on
If someone made the mistake, they either never lived to tell the tale, or weren’t going to to tell the tale, pretty embarrassing and mentally painful doing that.
I just want to say right now I'm writing a novel set during WW2 about an American soldier in Europe You have no idea how helpful these shorts are!
Never heard of that.
"are you German?"
"No"
"Okay, move Along"
"Gott sei Dank"
They should've just turned off friendly fire
ACUs didn’t blend in either yet they used those for like 20 years💀
In retrospect ACUs digital pattern sucked
Mine were woodland BDUs.
he is so fine...
Imagine your friend accidently shoots you like I would be confused
I mean yeah, wouldn’t want to document my guys getting killed /killing by friendly fire either.
It sucks that friendly fire has been a thing for forever and happens as a cherry on top of the horror of war :(
Bro really needs to be my history teacher
The Germans had some pretty drippy camo patterns.
US troops invading southern France during operation (Operation Dragoon) painted their uniforms camo while wearing them in sprayed paint. They resorted to putting boxes on their heads not to breath in the paint while being painted.
The only thing what comes in my memory is that the 2nd Armored Division used them for there Armored infantry. The 41st infantry regiment used them to support tankers. Those are one of the units I have known as a Armored guy.
The "dark green" uniforms color is actually called Olive dab 7 , the lighter more tan colored uniforms were called Olive dab 3
Ahem no "DOCUMENTED."
Interesting. I've read in a few places that friendly fire was the reason. We do know camo was used in the pacific.
They didn't work in the snow but great for Marines in the Pacific.
The Marines in the Pacific had issues with the cammos fading. So I believe this to be true.
Camo uniforms work when the soldier is sitting still, once the soldier started to move it made them stand out.
