Confused as to which Badminton Court Flooring to install? Well, here’s a precise guide…
Between 2014 to 2019, India’s economy grew at roughly 7%, making it the fastest growing major economy in the world, surpassing even China. From $3900 in 2009, the country’s per capita PPP grew to $7060. With more and more disposable income and a better awareness of fitness, India’s famous middle-class is turning more towards indoor games. The boost may also be attributed to many factors like the popularisation of sports through private leagues, the availability of new facilities across the country and the change in perception towards sports. Once seen as a recreational activity, indoor sports today have become a great source of staying fit.
And when it comes to indoor games, Badminton is a clear winner.
The game requires minimal equipment and it is possible to play it at any time, even at night. It is, therefore, unsurprising to know that Badminton is one of the most popular sports in the world with over 220 million people actively playing it. In India, it was popularised by the likes of PV Sindhu, who became the Indian shuttler to win the BWF World Championships 2019, Saina Nehwal, and Kidambi Srikanth. The game has caught the imagination of both children and parents, resulting in rapid mushrooming of academies in many cities across the country.
Like any other game, Badminton requires the right type of surface. The characteristics of the Badminton Court flooring depends, to a large extent, on the frequency of use and the age-group expected to play on it. Wrong flooring may affect the play and in some cases, even injure players over the long term. It is, therefore, vital to know the exact details and requirements of a standard Badminton Court flooring before one decides to install it.
Here is the detailed Badminton Court Flooring Guide:

Standard Playing Dimensions of the court are 20 ft ✕ 44 ft.
The Court Dimensions with Non-Playing area is 15meters x 7.2meters.
A badminton court is 20 ft (6.1m) in width for doubles matches. For singles matches, this width comes down to 17 ft (5.18 m). The full length of the court is 44 ft (13.4 m).
The standard badminton court is a rectangle marked out with lines 40 mm in width.
The posts is 1.55 metres in height from the surface of the court.
The net is 76 cm in depth and at least 6.1 m in width. It is made of a fine cord of dark colour with a mesh between l5 mm and 20 mm.
The top of the net is edged with a 75 mm white tape doubled over a cord or cable that runs through the tape. This tape rests upon the cord or cable.
The top of the net from the surface of the court is 1.524 m at the centre of the court for singles. For doubles, it is 1.55 metres over the side lines.
While there’s a lot of importance given upon markings and nets, the flooring and what’s beneath it often get neglected. And it is not surprising, considering that these features are not visible to the eyes.
Manier times, the contractors take advantage of owner’s lack of awareness and use sub-quality materials in the flooring. Such sub-standard is not durable over the long run. However, Floorings can very well be imagined as the foundation of a building, since the entire Badminton infrastructure is built upon it. Any issues in the Badminton flooring may waste the hard work done on building this infra. Moreover, it affects the playing experience and may lead to serious injury to the players exposed to it in the long term.
As a result, it is essential to have a detailed knowledge about the various types of Badminton flooring and which one suits best to your needs.
For Indoor - concrete sub-base with zero level is required to install any of the following flooring options.

A Wooden flooring is arguably the best choice to have as a badminton court flooring because it is area elastic floor surface.
In fact, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) itself recommends wooden flooring. According to BWF’s official handbook, “It is desirable to have a wooden sprung floor together with approved non-slip court mats.”
Wood has a natural tendency to absorb pressure without being too hard on the body. This makes for a great playing surface. However, not all wooden surfaces are for badminton. Certain varieties are susceptible to getting slippery while others may not be as durable.
The most recommended types of wooden badminton court flooring are hardwood.
A lot of times, the flooring is also polished with a laminate coating to give it an impressive finish and durability.
